What do you use for a night stand?

When we got a new bed the first thing I discovered was that my night stand was no longer going to be usable. The new pillow top sleep sets are HUGE! I don't know what I want for a bedroom suite, or if I want one, yet so I had to get creative. I was using two milk creates stained in Puritan Pine stacked on top of each other but now that they were two short I decided to just affix one of them right to the wall on each side of the bed. Wow! It looks really cool and for the first time we actually have matching bedside tables. Do you use something different for a bedside table? What kinds of things have you got creative with and loved the non traditional look? What ones have flopped?

We don't have room for nightstands so we have done without! On my hubby's side of the bed, there's a dresser, and a shorter dresser next to it. The short dresser basically acts as his nightstand as his alarm clock is on it, though a lamp is on the taller dresser. On my side, I have a dresser too but it's not used as a nightstand (bunch of baby blankets on top) - and a diaper changing table. My baby wakes me up so I don't need an alarm clock - ha ha. How's that for a non traditional look! Before we got this bedroom set - I think I've used our drafting table as a nightstand. It's all funtional - I think nightstands in our small space would be a flop - ha ha.

I've had the money for a bedroom set put away for literally years. I sold a vehicle probably close to three years ago and decided that I would use the money for that but I have never been able to find one I liked! So the money continues to sit in the bank and we still use milk crates, lol. For a long time the 'nightstand' on my husband's side was actually a TV tray. It actually looking kinda cute, it was just wood with a clear stain.

Hey, if milk crates work - why not use it?! And if they match on either side - even better! I thought about it - and I think we used a small filing cabinet as a nightstand at one point - but we only had one, so we placed it on my husband's side of the bed. Gosh, if the day comes that we can actually get real nightstands, I won't know what to do with them - hee hee!

I use a night stand. But what do you mean by no longer usable? Are you expecting it to be a certain height for a lamp or to reach things? Mine is also noticeably lower than the bed, so it's really just a table with storage...

Ya, it was like 6 inches lower than the bed so I couldn't see the clock or anything like that. I like my nightstand to be a few inches higher than the bed.

I got a new captain's bed with a matching bookcase headboard in 2007 along with a gigantic mattress set as well. It took me months to get used to the height of it...I swore that if I fell out of bed I'd break something..my former bed was SO much lower...but the table I have next to it is a fairly decent height to compensate for the higher bed...and it's not even really a table per se, but one of those moveable wooden small TV carts on wheels and has more space for books underneath-works great! As for my clock, since I have the bookcase headboard I put it on top of there instead of the table

I really want a bookcase head board, I used to have one for my old double bed, but I've had a heck of a time finding one that I like for a queen. I like the idea of having a bedside table on wheels. One thing I didn't consider when affixing mine right to the wall is that it makes making the bed a little challenging!

That's really, really cool. We haven't done anything quite so creative, but we have taken cheap, woven blankets with a pattern and used them for curtains or to cover walls and doors with lots of air leeks in the winter. They look nice and they tend to help keep the cold from coming in and making our furnace run so much. My brother does the same thing, so it's pretty common up here.

That's a neat idea. It's always nice when something like that looks nice and serves a function!

I use an old wooden chest as a night stand. I put my pocketbooks and magazines inside, so when I feel like reading pocketbooks before going to bed, I find it handy. On top of the chest, I've a small lamp, alarm clock, cellphone and a glass of water. By the way, I sleep on the floor atop a double bed sized foam.

hi jesssp I had a pillowtop bed and now its in storage until my son gets a job a nd we get some money for an apartment. right now I am in a room at Gold crest retirement center. we each of us have huge dressers and bedside bureaus also so we do have some storage place but the mattress here is sure not like my almost new pillowtop in storage. this year has to be our year when my son gets a good job and we can once more live together in our very own apartment. I used to have an end table that served as my bedside table in our apartment. I painted it a pale green then put a whitewash of thinned white paint over it and wiped most off leaving a pale green shining through the white mist, very pretty and was a used furniture buy.

That does sound pretty. I love when old is made new again with something as simple as a coat of paint and a white wash. I'm crossing my fingers that 2010 is your year!

Hi, jesssp. I don't have a nightstand at this moment. But I do put my things on the plastic container in my closet. I use this to sit some of my things on it, like my blanket for instance.

I never had a nightstand until we moved here..we just always used our dresser for the alarm, lamp and other things that we wanted to put on there. When we moved here we bought a smaller roller tv stand for our television and then a few months back my mother was getting rid of her smaller dresser and I told her that I would take it so now that is what we have our television on and I then decided to use the roller tv stand as my night stand and now it holds our alarm clock, jewelry box, lamp and lotion containers. It actually works out well because it is about the same size as our bed so we can just reach right out and grab the item the we may need.

A nightstand is a must have for me. I like to have somewhere to keep my lamp, alarm clock, book, glass of water etc. I also like to have it high enough that I can see what time it is without having to hoist myself up or hang over the side of the bed!

My bed is very low to the ground. And I have a lot of wall space. So I actually use a glass coffee table for a night stand. It's handy and it hold lots of bedtime accessories. Like this laptop when I am ready to go to sleep.
