Algebra, logical, bah!

Dearra went a few rounds with her algebra homework today. Her dad helped. I didn't do well with algebra at all. In fact, I repeated it just as a matter of pride, just so I could get a better grade, and still didn't do all that great with it. Now I'm a very logical person. Dearra is a very logical person. I don't consider her dad a particularly logical person in comparison. Yet he "gets" algebra and we don't. Can somebody explain this to me?

Dawnald Ji, Hello! Algebra is quite interesting branch of the Mathematics. If you really try to solve the algebric problems step by step then not only it becomes easy to solve them but also the matter of solving becomes the interesting one. Algebra is actually based on logics and perfecting Algbra makes your thinking also logical.

Well at the ripe old age of 52, I'm not feeling inclined to try and tackle it. It was hard enough for me in high school when my brain cells were newer! But seriously, some people just have trouble with that type of 'logic' and I am one of them. Unfortunately, so is my daughter. And they start them on algebra earlier than they did when I was in school.

hi Dawnald, this isnt the case only with you but there are many like you who find it hard to help their kids in home works. And my mom and dad would fall in that category coz they never knew anything about the basics in maths and i'm glad that they are proud of me now coz i am really good in maths and hope i dont have to face any problems when it comes to homework related my kids lol.great day.

Fortunately her dad can help her. I would have to learn it all over again. Place target on wall, bang head.

any time you stick a letter in a math problem all the logic flies out the window! I think it takes a certain kind of "brain" to get that stuff, and I sure don't have it!

I had to be tutored thru my last year of algebra to graduate high school, needless to say, no math crossed my desk in college!

I only had the one year of Algebra, fortunately Algebra II wasn't a college requirement. I didn't take any math classes in college either...

You're in good company! Actually, there are seven basic kinds of "smarts," such as verbal skills, spatial skills, etc., and math skills. Very few people have been blessed with excellence in every skill. Plus, and this might create an argument from some, on an average, men have better math skills, while women have better language skills. Of course, that is just an "average" and doesn't hold true across the board. Karen

Nope, it doesn't. Dearra has requested that I go to law school, run for office, eventually become President and ban Algebra.

Can't really explain it at all. I am a super logical person and algebra makes perfect sense to me. I have even taught it in the classroom and I still tutor it. Now Calculus, that doesn't make sense!

I never got as far as Calculus. Or Trig... But Geometry was really easy for me. PS too bad you're not in Sacramento, I could use an algebra tutor.

Define what you mean by "logical" person. Specifically, why would you say you are a logical person and her dad isn't one?

Oh dear, hard questions before 10 in the morning. Actually he is capable of being quite logical, it's just that he tends to react emotionally first, then calm down and think things through. Whereas, I usually take things calmly, puzzle them out, find a solution and only then do I let myself feel the emotions of the situation.

Very true, also the emphasis on the importance of certain facts over others. The prosecution is very likely to emphasize different items of evidence than the defense.

I think we all just puzzle things out in different ways. Some lend themselves to real world situations, some to algebra problems, some to debate teams, etc. Lawyers are great examples of this. Each side generally has equally valid, logical arguments stemming from the same sets of facts. It's all just matter of how those facts are put together.

I did well with Algebra, not Geometry. Geometry is for logical people. Algebra is for people who can follow steps one by one. I liked Algebra.

'fraid not.my brain had a seizure and locked up when it got to algebra. i never really saw a use for high math unless i planned on going into scientific fields... i guess maybe if you're not usually logical, you don't over think and are free to ponder it from other angles?

Hi there dawnald,I really can't explain that one to you but I can tell you that I was an A student in Algebra. I absolutely loved it and even took algebra books out of the library to do extra algebra because I just loved it that much. To me it was always like a puzzle that needed solving. That being said, I am probably one of the blondest, ditziest people you could ever meet...no exaggeration. If I tell anyone that knows me that I aced in algebra they are like, "ya, ok, right!" I am very right brained which is not the side that holds logic. Maybe Algebra is one of those subjects that requires creative right brain thinking.

I never ‘got’ algebra either, I still don’t and quite frankly I don’t want to ‘get’ it! I do not see the use for it. I passed my high school exams including maths and of course algebra but to this day I don’t remember ever learning any of it; it’s quite bizarre! When my daughter will have to do it I hope my husband has a better recollection or we’ll need a tutor!

Umm...I like Lambs answer. Can I steal it and take it as my own? I am fairly decent at basic math like my addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and can normally figure out real math with just a bit of time but to me algebra and fractions are my walls..i dislike them both and have told the kids while I will help them with their homework once they reach those I am out. Which I honestly thought would probably be once they reach high school and I was hoping on a wing and a prayer that they would be smart enough themselves to figure it out without my help but I was wrong because here it they are in 3rd and 5th grade and they are already working on this stuff so I told them they better pay attention big time because if they are working on this in elementary school I would hate to see what they will be doing once they reach high school....

Hi Dawnald! It does not necessarily mean that if you are good in logic it follows that you will be good in numbers. That is the reason in exams usually Logic and Reasoning has a separate portion from Mathematics, English, General Information and Science. I also consider my self as a logical person however, I am not that good in Algebra when I was still studying. I get good grades but even how hard I try to get the highest grade I can't. In our class I excel in almost all of the subjects (English, Science, History, etc.) but was never ever able to beat the Wizard of our class who is my best friend and he is a male. My hubby is also great in numbers especially Algebra. It's the same for my father and brother. Mom is good in History, Logic and Reasoning, English and Science but can't beat Dad when it comes to numbers especially Algebra! My hubby and I love to take online exams and as always he does good in Numbers but I don't. I do good in Logic and Reasoning but he does not. Logic though just like Algebra is one of the branches of Mathematics. I used to wonder why it seems that Males excel in numbers compared to girls. It has been a long time debate. Whenever one of my guy friends will tell me that males are more intelligent than females since they are good in numbers/ Mathematics I used to threw a rebuttal and tell them that it is not true that guys are good in Math compared to girls. Then one day I encountered an article explaining that Males are really good in numbers and Females are good in Logic. I really don't want to believe the article but what can I do? It has a scientific basis and explanation. :( So the feminist in me finally accepted the fact that normally Males are really good in numbers compared to girls. Maybe that is the reason I only knew a few girls who actually did very very good in Math. Actually I can only think of one. My cousin Janet. Okay but it does not necessarily mean that males are more intelligent than females because females excel in Logic. So I would say one gender just do better in one area compared to another but it does not necessarily mean that one of them is more intelligent than the other one. :)

It sounds to me like you call being logical straight forward and to the point, short sweet and simple. It sounds like your hubby has a great grasp of the concept of complicated compound thought. How's that for an explanation?

I didn't get it either.......and still don't. When my girls were in high school one of them coudn't get it either.....so I told her to stay after school one day and ask the teacher to explain it......well she did and when she came home she did understand the total concept of algebra....I however probably never will! So who knows what the formula is to understanding it?

Not I! But the husband is still insisting that it's perfectly logical. Maybe I'll get myself an "Algebra for Dummies" book and see if I can puzzle through it.

Most logical people tend to get Geometry first and then Algebra. At least that's the experience I've had with them. Unfortunatly Algebra usually comes first in school..lol...I have a college algebra course coming up in a couple of months and I am dreading it..lol

My logic tells me that as there is no logical reason for ever needing to know algebra outside the classroom then there is no logical reason to learn it, and that is the conclusion any logical person would come to, thus you and Dearra have proved yourselves to logical people.

algebra is one of the easiest methods in mathematics.when i was a child i feel irritated by the algebraic problems in mathematics..but later on i understand it slowly and steadily . because i have more faith in almighty god.i seek help from Him..... he helped me ... so, don't worry about that..just pray to almighty god ..He will solve everything..... at sometimes it may be the problem of teachers..... i hope that i have given my suggestions.......
