Hi friends, I have been noticing when waiting in a traffic signal for the turn of green, people are busy in selling things like newspaper, magazines, toys, cloths duster, gloves etc. Sometimes they are coming into bus too for increasing their sales. I am not sure this practice is going on in all places but here (in our place) it is a usual scene. I am not sure about the quality of the products because all are waiting for the turn of green and there may be hardly get time for checking the products. Once I heard that somebody purchased a book from traffic signal and lot of pages were missing in between. It means there is no guarantee of for the quality. Begging in traffic signal is also a common practice. What is your opinion about purchasing things in a hurry? Is this practice (sales in traffic signal) going on in your place? Do you encourage the sales in the middle of road? Please share your thoughts?

Hi Sreekala, Yes i used to buy newspaper. Getting one relieves me of boredom from traffic. however, bus drivers must be careful enough because they can do some trouble for selling inside their buses.

Hi msf, I think buying newspapers is not giving any trouble either to the seller or to the buyer. But for other items it may need time to check (the quality) and there won't be enough time in signals. Thanks for the participation. Have a great time.

Reading materials like newspapers and magazines are just fine to be sold on the street but not food. It’s scary. Given all the pollution, it’s not sanitary to sell food along the highway. You will be exposed to some kind of illnesses.

I too come across the same menace at busy junction but I never entertain such junction hawkers or beggars. This happened here once when a lady opened the side wind-shield to give a coin to a beggar she suddenly snatched the gold chain round her neck and ran away. You know it is difficult to chase a burglar in the midst of heavy traffic especially you are in a car and waiting at the junction for the green signal. The beggars and sellers of curios are more during festival seasons. During onam there will be people, especially from the north, to sell plastic floral carpets and during Christmas there will be many out there to sell masks, decorative items, balloons, trees etc. Whatever be the occassion I never entertain any of them or open my windshield when I drive my car. A warning:You don't do it either, lol.

Hi Cosmo, How are you? I guess you must be busy with work. I too don't entertain such kind of sales. It is really awful when beggars turned snatchers, that lady may never show any sympathy to beggars in her whole life. Thanks for sharing the incident. Have a great day.

i think you are from the philippines? am i right? i do not usually buy from them. but there are times when i am super hungry, i buy from them. also only when there is a VERY interesting topic in the newspaper. usually when the traffic light turns red, its my time to go over things in my car and see if i can tidy them.

it seems to me that india and the philippines is very much alike, in terms of many things. we are always preferred for call centers, and also in those that sell during traffic :D

Hi thebestmom, It means foods are also available in signals. But I never seen the sale of food in signals, thanks for adding this too. In case of newspaper, we can get the same without any doubt on quality becuase the same is available in every place. But if you purhcase books then you have to be careful sometimes pages may be missing. I am from India. Thank you very much for the participation. Have a nice day.

Hiya Sreekala, It is´nt allowed for anyone to sell in the main Streets except when there are celebrations and they have to have a License for it. If they get caught they can be put in Jail or fined so it has been reduced to nothing as People cannot afford to pay for that License. No Selling is allowed in the Traffic or on Trains or Buses for that you have to go to their Markets they setup which is often wayout of the Town. It has become really unfriendly in that sense.

Hi angel, It means, if you want shop anything then you have to go to the market. I think sometimes it is good and in other hand it has it own disadvantage too. However, you people are aware about the rules and you can carry the necessary things with you always. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.

Hiya sreekala, It would be really nice to see people selling original items like before specially in the Stalls they used to have here. Well and the people who used to sell going around the Shops and Bars they used to have original things too. Afraid this has all changed for these people and everyone else I would not call this a free market at all. For this to be a free trade country it has to be fair and it is not everything has gone the opposite way in trading and selling. They break all the rules of the game.

Hello Sreekala, Ive been in this situation only once and the man was selling newspapers and he's been at that specific corner for years. But Id think that now it would be best to be at a traffic light with the windows closed and your doors locked. I wouldnt want to buy anything from that type of street vendors unless Id know them. How can you find them again if the product is defective? How can you be sure its not stolen merchandise? But, Id be more concerned with my own safety, sitting in my car with my wallet in my hands.......not a good idea Id say.

Hi magicalbubbles, You have pointed out an important issue, we don’t have any guarantee about the quality of the product and there won’t be enough time to check the same properly. I heard that once somebody bought book from the traffic signal and pages were missing in between. We can buy only the newspaper with trust. Thanks for sharing your views. Have a great weekend.

Hi dear, How are you? Hope you are doing well. After a long time we are communicating through mylot. In train it is also a common scene. People keep on coming to sell things upto the end of the journey. Earlier the sales were on sleeper class only now they are coming in a/c compartments too. It is on long journeys and we have enough time to check the things. Sometime people are enjoying the purchase in train because all are sitting idle and bored so they are treating it as a time pass. But in traffic signals, first of all it is dangerous to move around the vehicles when they are impatiently waiting for the signal and yet I haven’t seen any purchase/sales. But I think sales must be there otherwise they won’t come again for selling. Thanks for coming quickly. Have a wonderful day.

Here in Australia where I live we have young people selling newspapers of offering to clean car windows at traffic lights. I say no to either because the windows don’t usually get cleaned very well and if you don’t have the right change for the paper you will not get any change at all! When I travelled in Thailand I used to see people especially children selling things almost everywhere; even in restaurants kids used to come in and sell tissues, they looked like they really needed the money too and I had so many packets of tissues because I used to buy a couple almost every meal time!

Hi Paula, So you are helping the poor people by getting more tissues from them. I can understand the kindness in you, sometimes I used to purchase things from small kids even if we really don’t need the same (but not in traffic). When they get money a smile is spreading in their face as a symbol of satisfaction. Thanks for sharing dear. Have a nice day.

Hello sreekela as if you're talking experience from my country. I understand you're from India. Are you referring that to our country Philippines? If not then we have the same quality of people living on the streets. Yeah, sometimes I would buy especially when I feel thirsty at the middle of the way. There are also lots of people here in out country doing same as yours... I think we have one thing in common in our society... Thanks... Mobhomeir here///....

I have never seen these people selling things at traffic lights in Australia or any of the other countries that I have travelled to. What we do get here though at traffic lights is windscreen washers. They will have a squirt bottle full of water or a bucket and a window cleaning tool that scrubs with one side and removes the water with the other side. They approach your car and ask before washing most of the time, but some people wash first and make you feel obliged to pay them. I do not like this!

Hi RawBill1, It is good to know that you don't have any sellers in traffic. Here also the cleaners are available in traffic and most of the time small kids are doing the cleaning. One boy (less than 10 years old) clean the front glass of a car and his younger sister is asking money from the driver. They are making sure about the money, in case the signals turn then they don’t get time to take money. Kids are always smart.... Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.

This is not a practice that we see here and in fact I think it might be illegal here. However, if it was something that was commonplace, I don't think that I would ever do it. I've always been really picky about what I will buy and to have to make a purchase in a hurry like that, I wouldn't be able to bring myself to do it. I can see though why people try to do this kind of thing because there are people that need to get ahold of every dime that they can find in this society.

Hi dorannmwin, Yes you are right, if we purchase the things in a hurry we can't select the right products. In traffic people are just waiting for the green signal and nobody can enjoy the purchase in a hurry. In my opinion it is good to ban such kind of sales. In the other hand they (vendors) mare making something to live, so I have sympathy for them. Thanks for sharing your views. Have a nice day.

Sreekala, I have also noticing that there are many people are coming to sell their things in traffic signal as well begging and forcing the people also. This is not fair what they doing , we should not encourage such a kind of persons, these type of problems should com forward to take action by any social net work people.

Hi Sree, I totally have never seen such situation taking place in my place here. I believe people are not allowed to sell stuffs somewhere around the traffic light. If the small selling and buying is allowed to take place in such heavy traffic area, surely this will cause the traffic disturbance. Further more if the purchasing is still carry on when it’s turn for the vehicles to move forward. And this of course will bring undesirable inconvenience to most of the road users definitely. Therefore it’s not encouraged to do so utterly. We would see people promote their goods like dried fish and shrimp, DVD, cookies, lotteries, etc at the food court occasionally in my place. But I never like to purchase whatever while taking food. I prefer to get things from the hypermarket or shopping mall. We can find the same vendor to claim for replacement or compensation in case the stuffs we have bought having any problem Yeah, it’s not wise to buy thing in a rush for we don’t have time to check the quality of the stuff nicely before paying. No wonder you have heard that someone have purchased a book with missing pages from a traffic signal. I had seen people rushed up in a small crowd and tried to peddle their goods in front of the bus while visiting certain tourist sites in China few years back. I think at least this is better and safer as well than to promote the products in any busy road. Take care and happy posting

Hi lkbooi dear, I completely agree with you. Many countries are not allowing such kind of sales. So far I learnt that in India and Philippines is encouraging this kind of sales. There is high risk in such kind of sales and also much disturbance in the road. I don't think this sale is legal but I have not seen anybody to monitor them or stop them. Thank you very much for sharing your views. Take care and have a great weekend.

We have beggers at the traffic lights. That have made it a law that they cant do it, but they still try. Im sure if they were selling at the lights they would also be arrested. Actually its not against they law to beg. Its against the law to give. Sounds kind of backwards to me. But then i question alot of our laws. I believe the beggers and sellers at the traffic lights are distracting to the drivers.

Hi jdyrj, I too felt as the Law is strange, may be their intention is good, if they punish the money givers then they won't give money for getting punishment and if the beggars are not getting money then they will stop begging automatically. The Law is showing mercy to beggars, we may feel like that in fact they are not doing any kindness. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day.

I do not purchase anything from the signal. I feel sorry about that. It should be controlled and they should be given ultimatum to earn. Everybody is in hurry in the signal. Accident is likely to happen if it continues.

as for me,i did not buy foods in between traffic signals especially if foods are open or may come out dirty. as much as possible i do not encourage them to sell any items in that short a time...its critical for both parties the seller and the buyer. for the seller its not safe for them to sell in traffic lights especially kids, and for the buyer the quality of product is at stake.
