LOL. This is a silly post but I had to bring it up because I'm constantly seeing it around here at MyLot! Do you ever notice this or take part in this? I see a lot of discussions or responses with what I would consider to be an abnormal amount of periods, question marks, or exclamation marks.. I know a lot us are excited to be here - making money, having fun, but this seems a little over-the-top! So, is this a cultural thing - over-using punctuation? Or do you do it? Has anyone else noticed this trend; what reason do you think might be behind it?

well I think its just the internet language evolving a step further how many times have we all used abbreviations such as lol or pmpl, or btw etc etc. I just think its a natural progression when people seem to use the web grammar seems to be left behind. Plus it may also be because not everybody has the ability to express themselves to a certain extent so use !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or maybe their first language is not english.

hi maezee nope its not cultural and its from not reading mylot guidelines and rules, they forbid that very thing so maybe some like to play fast and loose and just dare to get their discussions deleted. I only hit the exclamation point once as that is all that is needed to get a point across. There is one user on here who prided herself on over use of punctuation marks and usually gets away with it but not always. they do frown on it.

I'm in agreement with you. I'll usually use ONE exclamation point, although SOMETIMES if I'm feeling EXTRA excited, I'll spring for two.. but that's it. . I didn't know it was against the rules, though! So now I really wonder why someone would want to take the risk. Hmm.!

Yes I have noticed this.Certain youngsters from few places here who are not that proficient in English try to prove them that they too are good at it by using this punctuations. They are under the illusion that using these punctuatins make them modern and hep.The real good and right things are not learned properly nowadays.People tend to show off themselves in the most annoying ways.

Hi maezee.. :D Well most of the time I have this tendency not to release the last word i'll type like theseeeeeeee.. :D i don't know but most of the time it has something to do with my enthusiasm or excitement.. like sometimes when i'm happy i tend to update my facebook status with "i'm happyyyyyyyy" instead of plain "i'm happy". I don't know maybe it's just may way of expressing my excitement and i really don't intend to prolong my responses only to make it five liner or more.. I'm sorry :D thanks maezee good discussion you have here.. i also wanted to know what the other mylotters think about this :D

Maybe some people just like to overuse the punctuation marks. Sometimes I do find it quite annoying. Maybe the user thinks they will be paid more by Mylot for typing so many characters into their posting. Then again it could be a cultural thing. They should really learn Netiquette online.

hi maezee! haha! I sometimes use punctuation exaggeratedly if needed but not too much. lolz.. I mean, I can't help using more than one ! (exclamation mark) when saying "OMG!!!" or "Welcome!!!". Haha! But not to a point it distracts the discussion. I have red on the TOS about the use of excessive punctuation and capitalization (all-caps) so, as much as possible I avoid using it excessively. Happy Lotting!

Well, I think I may be guilty of over using periods. It is a bad habit I got into, and I sometimes stop myself but other times it just get's away from me... I don't think I misuse the others.. although I may from time to time do one of these ??!! - if I feel it requires it. I am not sure what reason is behind it. I know even when I write I tend to use a lot of dashes like - instead of periods or commas. Why? Not sure.. oops there I have gone and don it again. Just color me guilty!

hello maezee, from what i can recall, the use of punctuation is extremely considered as a violation most specially if it's included in the title that's one reason why i never put that mark in the title to prevent from loosing another topic. but still one of mine still got deleted

I have come accross posts of that kind. It is irritating, I know. I think first language has nothing to do with that. My first isn't English and in my native language grammar, excessive punctuation is very discourage. I think the reason behind it is to make the post look longer which they hope will bring more fortune.

Sometimes, the smileys and capitalization is just ins't enough to express feelings in the responses. Or it's just a way to call attention to the sentence within the paragraph. In any case, I don't think it's cultural. I just think it's just one's idea of trying to be unique and special.

Dang I got all red reading your post...Guilty party here.. I like to use a lot of periods in my post because I think it helps people to understand the tone of the letter better that way. I use it to excelerate the punctuate..lol I don't go all out with all of the !!! or ??? I use those appropriately but I am guilty on the periods.. they are friendly little dots.. and I've been "conversating" that way online for year and it's simply habit now..lol But thanks for noticing..lol

I have to agree with all the people here. I also think, that excessive punctuation is done becuase people had a brain freeze and don't know what to type for a while so just keep adding exclamation marks at the end of a sentence whilst thinking what to say.

I'm not sure if it's a cultural thing but my Indian friend usually does that even when we chat and when I asked him, he simply answered that it is just to emphasize with his feelings. Although technically not in the standard speech. It is fine with me though... I think in mylot, this would be something to encourage others or make the discussion sounds so exciting. I mean, there is something about punctuations too, it communicate and well, the processing of this message is really up to us.

Well, most people canĀ“t write perfectly and have excessive of everything. Take into consideration that most are not even native speaking people. As long as is understandable who cares how many dots are on the phrase?

hmmmm ........... let see .......... who can beat me for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, now back to the topic, actually I haven't seen a lot of this issue. Maybe I tend to join those discussion with very specific topic. Again, most of the people here are not from native english speaking country, so there are people who use the wrong punctuation at the wrong place etc.

Yes that is enough to corrupt the language. But one more advantage will be the revolution of new languages. As the history says the new culture replaces the existing culture. And that is very pain full process for the generation that have nurtured and already adopted the culture that is going to be replaced. But if the change is logical than it must be welcomed.

I do not see any issue using punctuation as long as we can understand them. We should use punctuation in our discussion because I feel most off us are well aware of the common punctuation used in our discussion. Nothing wrong, should be encouraged.
