Could a TRUE Non-Establishment Candidate Replace Senator Evan Bayh?

Could it be possible for someone who is NOT a Washington insider, who has NOT ever held or run for political office and who is definitely NOT a member of the "establishment" to get a shot at replacing Senator Evan Bayh as the junior Senator from Indiana? Someone who has worked for and fought for farmers and the working class all his adult life? Someone who has spoken for the Heartland for years and years? YES HE CAN!! Singer John Mellencamp, known for such songs as "Small Town" and "This is Our Country" is the focus of an online draft campaign with several Facebook groups being formed for this purpose. You may recall John McCain's campaign using some of his songs in 2008 until he was asked to stop. Any thoughts? Annie : http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=9882818

Well, he isn't an insider but I don't know if he fits the bill or not of someone with the original intent of the founders as his platform. The fact that he supported an establishment candidate (Obama) in the last election raises a red flag as well. He has been a champion for the plight of america's farmers, no question there, thats pretty admirable. It's hard to say because he isn't a candidate and has no platform out there to look at and see where he stands on the issues and his ideas for dealing with them. I'd have to see that before I could make a call on whether or not I'd support him. Just being an outsider alone isn't enough if you still have insider views on things, ya know? *shrug* Should be interesting to watch anyways if he accpets the draft. It could well be the right year to do it, people are sick of establishment types and if he runs out side of that establishment and embraces basic core american founding principals, he stands a real chance of winning and I would welcome him. ***Side note***I do think it was kinda whiny and cheap of him to ask McCain using his music on the campaign trail, but they're his songs I guess, he can conrtoll them how ever he wants. I was also a little annoyed with Van Halen for the same reason, it just came across as whining and diva-ish

I agree that it's really whiny when singers like him complain about their music being played. You know what though? They have ZERO power in that. They can whine and cry all they want, but so long as the proper royalties are getting paid, there is absolutely nothing they can do. I think politicians only stop to avoid causing musicians to rail against them. Frankly I wish more musicians would have a more positive attitude on it like the former guitarist from Heart after the sisters from that group started whining about the use of "Barracuda". "the band's former guitarist, Roger Fisher, told Reuters last week that the McCain camp’s use of the song benefited both sides: Republicans get "the ingenious placement of a kick-a$$ song" - and Heart gets headlines and royalties. Part of that money, said Fisher, would be heading to the Arizona senator’s opponent: "With my contribution to Obama's campaign, the Republicans are now supporting Obama," he told Reuters" http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/09/mccain-and-palin-once-again-play-barracuda/?fbid=sMNm3uIvU0u

I really don't care either way if he "whined" about McCain using his songs or not. Maybe he did it just for the principle of the thing! Maybe he thought that byhis songs being played some people would get the impression he was endorsing McCain. Annie

Heck, I'm a musician and I want my music EVERYWHERE I wouldn't have cared if Obama or McCain had used it, exposure is exposure.

I'm from Indiana and I don't think Mr. Mellancamp would have a prayer here, of course I could be wrong, but I don't think so. While he has many fans there are also a great number of people here who have not really liked the guy for awhile. He charges absolutely ridiculous prices to see his shows when he comes to Indianapolis and though I have no personal knowledge of this at all, I have heard from at least two people in his "home town" of Seymour that nobody really liked him cause he came across as stand-offish. Maybe cause he knew he was going to be a big rock stat someday..who knows. Anyway, I just don't see him having much support here.

Hmmm...very interesting. Thank you for offering a unique perspective as someone from Indiana. What did you and people you know think about Senator Bayh's surprising announcement? Any thoughts on who will replace him? Annie

People I know (who care about politics)were really dissapointed about his decision. He along with his dad, have been staples in Indiana politics for awhile. Personally, it did surprise me but I also noticed a change of attitude or lack of enthusiasm with him recently. He was really playing the political games duriong the presidential elections and I truely don't feel he is comfortable in that role. My guess about his Democratic replacement would be Baron Hill, but who knows at this point. My feeling is that, unfortunately, unless a really good wild card candidate like an independent or some other celebrity type figure runs, the seat will be filled by a Republican, I think John Hostetler has a good chance for the GOP.

We just may have a winner. This is the perfect year for people that aren't Washington insiders. People are mad ion both sides. Inexperienced politicians are a hot commodity.

I am very, very sorry to see Evan Byah go. He was a genttleman and definitely one of the good guys. However, I thing John Mellencamp would make an interesting replacement. He could be our first Rock & Roll senator and he might just be gritty enough to stand up to the Right Wing. I guess it will just depend on whether or not he is ready to give up music. I honestly can't see a US senator on the road pushing a new album.

You are absolutely right and how man moderate Republicans can you name who are not on a RINO list?

This whole "stand up to the Right Wing" crap is exactly why Bayh left. Everybody wants a fight and nobody wants to be bipartisan anymore.

We'll see. I don't know enough about his politics to make a judgment call. I've always thought he was a good guy, although I agree with X that it's a bit whiny to ask that people not play your song at campaign rallies. We'll see how it goes.

I usually like to try to put myself in a situation and ask myself what I would do or how I would feel but it's beyond my comprehension that I could be a rock star with hit songs someone would like to use in a Presidential campaign...lol! Annie

....Hi annie, I was watching that report on television which said that there was a grass roots campaign to draft John Mellencamp for senator from that state. I think that is a great idea. He is smart enough and unblemished enough, and with the right campaign manager, they can get the money, he could fight off the Republican and win the seat. I think they can talk him into it, because I think he would like to see some changes in Washington as well. Senator Franken is doing okay. So bring it on, let's see some other fresh faces on the front. Take care.

I agree, I think Franken is doing a great job. I know there are those here who will disagree with me, but I think he's proven there's a lot more to him than just comedy. Annie
