How would you handle someone picking at your childs name?

My son who is two has a sports fanatic for a father and when he found out I was having a boy he wanted him to be a junior, but I didnt want that so I compromised. He loves the basketball player Amar'e Stoudemire, and figured that he would be born in Feb. so the name is close to Amore meaning love. Well my sons name is Amari and everyones that asks me his name whether they are complete strangers or not tells me that the name is girlie, or isnt that a girl name? While I was never completely sold on the name, I do not want my son to grow up thinking something is wrong with it and constantly having to hear that it is a girl name. You would think that adults would have some manners? What would you do in my situation?

I have a niece named Micah. My husband's sister took more hell for that than any of our other family members combined. Everyone kept telling her Micah was a boy's name. Maybe so, but I know more female Micahs than I do male Micahs. Just like the name Shelby. I've seen it be linked to countless girls names and only a few men named Shelby. If you like the name, then who cares what everyone else thinks. But before you go name your child something stupid - remember the CHILD has to live with that name, not you. The child will be named Joyquantrayon for the rest of her life, not you.

I have a female cousin named Micah also, When I heard it I loved it. She is cute and sweet and the name to me says cute and sweet. I know a couple of male Micah's also. But when I named both of my kids I tried to keep in mind that they will have to write it thousands of times, and use it just as much in their adult life! Thanks for your response. Have a wonderful day! :)

I think it is unusual and I like the name. When people say isn't that a girls name? I would reply that no it is his name and use a very matter of fact tone. Then perhaps they will get the message that is not cool to say that about his name. Unfortunately kids may be cruel though, kids will think of anything they can to be mean to other kids, and there is not much that can be done about that. I think when he is an adult though he will like the name.

I have starting saying no it is not a girl name, because that is my sons name and he is obviously not a girl! lol, but kids will make fun of each others name no matter what it is. But you would think that adults would have more manners than children and think about what they say before they say it. Thanks for your response. Happy mylotting! :)

Well to me your son’s name sounds quite offbeat…not the usual English names you come across so it might be quite interesting for him once he grows up…many languages have such names which might sound female but are actually not. Many Indian names have an ‘a’ at the end which might make it sound like a female name but is not so. My son’s name is Pushkar (a name I like very much) but in school most boys tease him either by calling him a pus*sy cat or by ‘pushing’ him from behind *sigh* guess they’ll get used to it, nothing can be done now.

Yeah I guess my son will get used to it after awhile, but now that he has three friends with similar names (jamari, Omari and zamari) I guess its becoming a little more popular. Kids will always find a way to make fun of a name that is not theirs so hopefully that will get better with time! well happy mylotting! :)

Well I did some research on the name Amari and found that some sites list it as male, female and or both. I have met 3 people with the same name, 2 are male 1 is female. I found a good site with a bit of information if you would like to read about it. You can also look up other names if interested. I don't think it sounds girlie at all. My name is Mari and to me it sounds manly as I had an uncle Mario ..lol I wouldn't worry about it a name is a name...he could be a boy named Sue. http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/meaning_of_Amari.html

If I were you I would just continue to educate your son as to where he got his name from. If you ask me it's a pretty cool story as to why you named him that. I myself do not think that is a "girly" name. You really can not help peoples lack of knowlege. I know who the basketball player is myself but, not everyone watches sports. It is a very nice and unique name.

Hey! :) I thought it was a neat little story too of how we decided to name him. You are probably right, those people most likely don't know the basketball player. But oddly enough I called my insurance company to get info and happened to be talking to my son at the same time and called his name. The rep on the other end immediately asked if I named him after the basketball player and that was his favorite player! lol so i guess that made up for all the negative comments.

if someone want a name for my baby then i appreciated them but i dont want to tell them that i dont like the name coz i dont want them to feel embarrass. i rather want to choose what i really want a name for my baby. i want to use his father's name as the first name then followed by another name, it will be like a double name.

In your situation I would tell people there are no such thing anymore as boys names or girls names. I would tell them they are free to have their own children and name them whatever they wish. Does your child's name have a meaning?
