Do you talk while eating, i find it's impossible to do it, whenever i am eating with my friend at home or in a restaurant, i will keep silent whenever i have food inside my mouth even if he/she asks me a question or my cell phone is ringing frantically. But for some people, eating and talking at the same time is no big deal, can you do that and how you do it. Is eating while talking is consider acceptable or rude act in your culture and tradition ??

People always call when I'm eating, so I'll answer and keep eating. Now it's up to them as to whether they want to continue talking as I'm chewing. If they don't mind then I won't mind either. In public I like to finish chewing before I open my mouth to talk. I don't find it attractive to see chewed food in someone's mouth and I would think it's the same for them.

Eating a carrot make a different chewing sound compare to eating a celery, i assume your caller can't tell the difference, they must all sound alike resemble 'rock and roll' music to the caller right out from your mouth. (joking)

Funny, but no one has told me to stop chewing, though some have asked if I was eating a carrot and no it was celery. I guess they are chewing deaf.

Its considered rude if you talk with your mouth full here where I live. But, carrying on a conversation between bites is perfectly acceptable. When I have dinner with my partner, we don't talk much, but we do have some light conversation. My phone is usually out of reach and I'll ignore it if it rings. I have had times though its gone off when I'm out and about. And, I don't answer it if I'm eating. But if I'm alone or something, then chances are I'll probably answer it. It really depends on my mood actually.

Yes, short sentences between each bite is alright, otherwise, it will be too boring during meal time among friend or family members if all are silent and just look at each other chewing food during the entire meal. lol!! Thank for your response.

hello lampar, well just like you, i don't do that. whenever there's food in my mouth, i don't talk. i wait till i swallow them before i speak... i was trained by my mom to keep my mouth close while eating and chew silently...hehe for us its not a good attitude to be talking while there's food in the mouth... sometimes when i saw some people doing it, i find it kinda rude. but well if its just fine with their culture then i can't do anything about it but respect them. good day!

Ckyera, I am not certain whether it is a 'culture' that consider it is alright to do both at the same time; especially if you got a chance to visit USA, you can see it happen in public restaurant here often, sometime it is such a disgusting scenario, some of these people talk non stop, but in a way that the whole place can hear them talk while eating or some talking on their cell phones while chewing at the same time. May be these people are just ignorant and have no culture and manner at all instead of 'human culture' permit them to behave in such a way, even the chimpanzee or monkey don't act in this way. But in USA, you can easily see that... you will have plenty of respects to show in this case... hahahaha....

So far i haven't come across any 'human culture' that see doing both at the same time is alright, ckyera!! May be it is done by people who have misguided notion of what 'rudeness' is or they are part of sub-human behaviors found among some people. lol!!

haha...really? here, i am seeing people doing that but in some areas like the squatters area, where most people are kinda uneducated, but of course not all people from there are like that. and sometimes those whom i saw doing that are those too hungry & excited to talk...haha just like what i saw in some movies. so maybe lack of knowledge of what is right & wrong when it comes to table manners...

I sometimes find myslef in situations when I must talk with food in my mouth. But I do a nice job of sticking it in a invisble place so it does not gross out anybody. Nonethe less, here it isn't a big deal to show what' in your mouth.

me and m wife loves talking. so even we are eating we do talk at each other. i guess more families do talk at the dinner table for this is the perfect time to tell of what happened with your day. talk about anything and everything. its one way of bonding with your family. if everybody is quiet then eating has become a chore already. well its my opinion only as long as you dont speak while your mouth is full then talking is fun while eating. you eat more when you have good conversations.

In that case, those folks on diet shouldn't be talking while eating since it make them eat more. I always thought otherwise, since we are not talking then we can focus on eating and enjoy the taste, in turn make us eat more, talking just take the fun away from eating ..har ha ha ha... I agree may be chit chat in between bites is good for relationship bonding and add some fun time to the meal, so long as when my mouth is not full or the food on the table doesn't look appetizing . But i had seen some people can talk on the phone at the same time eating, you know usually talk on the phone is quite different from face to face casual chat. it is quite amazing !! Thank for your response... and Cheer!

I try not to talk while eating, I think that it is disgusting to talk and eat at the same time. I don't think anybody wants to see the chewed up food inside my mouth as I open it to talk. The only exception is if there is something that needs urgent attention or if one of my kids is misbehaving then I will quickly mutter out something if I don't have time to swallow first. But mostly I think it is disgusting.

Good day! I don't talk while I eat. If I will I know I can do it but I prefer not to as I was thought since childhood that it's not a good table manners that you talk while chewing your food. When someone would ask me a question while there is still food in my mouth I would give them a hand signal meaning wait and once I've swallowed the food I'm chewing then I would answer the question.

It's quite a normal thing,actually... I do it all the time... Having in mind that I talk all the time and.. eat almost all the time :D I love both things.. anyway.. all I wanted to say is that, since you're in a casual situation with your friends or parents or whoever, it isn't rude. However, if u are attending a business lunch/dinner, I guess it isn't a very good idea to combine the two activities. Moreover talking while eating is sometimes the only opportunity nowadays to communicate with your relatives... We all know how each of us is a part of that hectic everyday routine.

Cloe you love to do both together and all the time, haha... I hear that loud and clear. I understand if you have a hectic daily routine, that may be the only way and time you have to actually communicate with your relative and family members, so it become a normal thing to do in your world. Thank for your response.

Eeew eating while talking is just nasty, its not a proper manner. I can talk while eating if I want to but i will never do it, that is just not right. I follow proper etiquette and I was raised to follow proper mannerism. My parents would never allow us to talk while our mouth is full.

If a person talks while eating, food may be inhaled into the lungs. Normally, after food is swallowed, it passes into the pharynx and then into the esophagus. Food is prevented from entering the larynx (the passageway to the lungs) by the epiglottis,a spade-shaped cartilage flap that covers the pharynx. If food does enter the larynx, a cough reflex is usually initiated, although food may lodge in the larynx, causing a blockage of the airway.

Hi, sknsk.. That is a tough long road ahead for our food, we just have to give our self some times so the food can go through all these different and complicated organs within our body, instead of get stuck in our lung... hahaha... Thank for the response.

Well talking while eating is not a good manner for and aside from that it is not so presentable to show someone that you are talking while eating, so it is ok if we will eat we just remain eating silent and we can talk after we eat. I know that in the part people are talking while eating its okay because it is a party but in normal gatherings we should notice proper eating.

I agree if it is a party, then usually you are served with light food, like cookies, cake and beverage, it will not get in the way much of chit chat or talking, other that that, it is better to remain silent and talk after finish eating. For me, it is good table manner, but then again, it is up to individual to decide what is right for him to do in meal time base on the real situation. It is a person rights to speak whenever he wants, even though it can be gross sometimes. lol!!! Thank for the response.

I can do that but I am not doing that because it is pretty uncomfortable while chewing food. I usually keep quiet when eating. Besides it is considered rude as well so I might just avoid doing that as well.

I talk whilst eating because I enjoy light-hearted conversation over dinner, but I NEVER talk whilst I have food in my mouth It's such a disgusting thing to do, and nobody appreciates it. Also, I hate receiving a telephone call whilst I am eating, because it usually takes me at least 5 minutes to finish the conversation, by which time my food has gone cold

Chat between bites is quite common between meal eaters, i did that sometimes but then i will have a small bite of my food if i want to talk, i can't talk while my mouth is full of food. It is just gross and rude for me to do that. Phone ring while you are having meal is quite a turn off, if you answer it, then must risk eating a cold food on your table, lol!!! Thank for your response.

here in our place, talking while eating is considered rude at all times. people will not understand what you are saying when your mouth is full and chances are that the food contents may come out from your mouth. doing it is also considered to be an uneducated act here in our place, so i refrain myself from talking while chewing something.
