scented candle observation

I was overhearing someone tonight talking about the scented candles we have at my work.( I don't buy them as I think it's not a good fit for me having small kids that are curious and can't keep their paws off stuff... KWIM? ) One was a cake scented candle. After hearing the customers comments and they had left I took a sniff of said candle.... YEASH! Ok, I like my baked goods and all however... for a fraction of the price of that candle they could buy a container of frosting and put it out *LOL* I dunno I thought it would be silly to spend money on something you can smell cheaply with the real thing KWIM? I know it's not as pungent as perhaps a candle or air fresheners of sorts but come on I think they were like $8 and I'd rather have the can of frosting personally

I too have small children in my house and I too think that if you really want to smell something that you can buy cheaper then the cost of the candle why not do that! That makes sense to me BUT I do like to have smelly candles when I am relaxing in the tub. I love having a relaxing hot bubble bath with scented candles all around me BUT they are also smelly candles that I love the smell of and I can get for WAY cheaper (like 2 for a dollar or something close to that).

What's this relaxing in the tub you speak of??? I only get that luxury on the days I have to go to work otherwise I"m SOL and have to jump in when I can if I can. Sounds like bliss to me! Too bad my lil guy won't leave me along long enough to #1

I don't have that kind of luck cause my girls co-sleep with me and usually I fall asleep right with them instead of trying to sneak out. I always worry that the sound of the well would wake them or my DS who is right next to the bathroom. & heaven forbid if my hubby wouldn't take candles as some sort of romantic cue *LOL*

Hmm. Well that is kind of similar to a candle that I liked the smell of. I used to work at a store and would go smell the cotton candle as often as I could. Okay that sounds bad, like I have a habit of smelling candles... well it smelled really good but I could just smell fresly dried laundry for free instead of buying the candle. i think the candle was $5.00 for the big one and then smaller one were like 4 / $1.00 or something like that.

Atleast those candles were a bit cheaper! But since I get to be by candles and other scented items I think it's just human nature to want to smell them. Or you could just put a bunch of dryer sheets around the house and you could get a similar effect w/o the candle & risk of fire in your home.

Never thought of it that way. I had put baby powder in them cause I love the smell on my bedding or febreeze them til I could get them washed. But you know if you put dryer sheets in a sealed bin whatever is in there will smell awsome, of course it will take some time but I rotate thru bedding so by the time one needs to be traded out the other goes in the bin ;0)

Yea, dryer sheets around the house. I've put dryer sheets in the bed when it has started to stink but I hadn't gotten a chance to wash them yet, I usually only wait another day before I wash after that though!

hi snugglebunnies, I am a huge fan of scented candles. I have tons of them but I do know what you mean by having them around the kids. I actually am very careful when I have mine lit and I don't have little kids. I only lite a few at a time and keep them in the room I am in only. Another thing that works really well and is not quite as dangerous is the candle warmers. they heat up the wax and you get the scent without the flame. it;s pretty cool and I think actually works better than lighting them. as for the baked goods candles..I agree. I'd rather have the real thing. I really don;t think the candle scents usually smell much like the real thing when it comes to that.

oh, you have a cat? I love cats, they're so funny! :) sorry think this is not related with your discussion he he:)

So the candle warmers are like say a modern version of an electric potpourri pot? I think I've heard of them but again there isn't anywhere my kids don't go that they wouldn't mess with them or one of the cats for that matter.

well, I totally agree with you. I wouldnt buy a cake scented candle. However, I do buy others, I love them not only because of their nice scent but also because they come in different forms and designs. So you see, I use them as decoration, and once in a while, I light them to enjoy their scent.

That is true! We used to have a candle shop when I was a kid (til the past few yrs or so) in the mall that had very ornate candles in them. I remember my Grandmother buying a few there when I was small to display that were molded into the blossoms of roses. But these are just boring ol' jar candles, not much to them to make them stand out design wise.

giving scented candles and its mere existence in large nos. in the malls still puzzles me. at this age where there are emergency lights already i think this is one of those things that people still manages to waste money on. peace .

I agree I wouldn't buy them for merely the scent but that they take the place of using a power lamp as well.

Well, some people just like that scent and they want their surroundings to smell like that everydays. If it was a real cake, admit that you would be eating it instead of smelling it

I went years without buying or burning candles, but I have started to buy them again recently. I have one on top of the mantle in the living room that it pretty much out of the way. It is a scented one. It is clean linen scented. That is the only scented candle I buy. It makes the whole house smell like clean laundry. It was on sale for $2.50 last week when I bought it. Had it been $8 I probably would have skipped it.

I love that smell it's one of my favorites. I wish clean laundry really smelled that way! But I don't get to use the smelly detergents w/ DS' eczema :0(

Hi. 3SnuggleBunnies. I don't appreciate any candle that does not smell strong nor last very long. I would rather buy Glade candles because the scent is much longer. And the smell is very delightful.

I don't like scented candles. Even if they smell good, they're just synthetic material. Why not smell the real thing? I definitely agree with you. Have a nice day!

Especially if the real thing can enjoyed on many more sensory levels especially something like frosting than a candle could. Can you imagine how long it took some chemist to come up with that scent to add to wax?

I believe it to be true that you need to take care when burning candles around small children. There are a lot of cheap scented candles out there that really aren't worth their wax. Yet there are numerous fine companies that manufacture the best scented candles. Take care in your choices.

Exactly, that's why I don't burn them it is safer for them not to be around til everyone is older. Though I could use them now days w/ the elec company jacking up their rates!

Hello 3SnuggleBunnies! I do use scented candles. I used them specially for the bathroom, so they last a very long time! Well they used to last, but since I got married my husband likes to have them scenting our room and living room from time to time. I use them because they cost me about one dollar and the smoke really kills odors! I usually buy candles with strong odors, because once I bought a strawberry cheese cake candle and it smell very little. You are right, its better in that case to buy the frosting than spending so much in a candle! Have a nice day, Libna.

Unfortunatly the strong smelling ones are always something like apple pie... bleah! I like something like lavender or linen but perhaps the stronger the smell like you mentioned the better it lasts smellwise in your home

I like my candles but will not pay that much to make want to eat something after smelling it. lol. I am pretty frugal when it comes to things burning up in smoke, lol. Me too I will buy the frosting. Much cheaper..

I have never smelled the cake scented one, but there are sooo many scented candles that I enjoy. I usually tend to lean more towards fruity or flowery smelling candles. My favorite is Love Spell!

I don't have candles in my house, except for the ones I use during power outages. I got cured of burning candles quite unusually. I had just gotten a MaineCoon cat kitten from a rescue person. He is like a tiger cat but with long hair. He was checking out the house and I had a candle burning. He dipped his tail into the flame and set his tail on fire!!! I was out of the chair in a flash trying to swat the fire in his tail out. He never noticed that his tail was flaming...and I got the fire out before he got burned. But from that point on I didn't use candles unless it was during a power outage. Of course there is the other side to the candle equation for me, and that is that $8 for a candle is waaaayyy out of my reach on my budget. That amounts to a bag of cat food, three days food for me or some fuel for my vehicle. I also find that using scented candles affects my allergies and asthma so I don't buy them anyhow and my friends know not to buy them for me either. (I've got them trained to buy me useful stuff anyhow,so I don't want to destroy the training! LOL)

Hi 3SnuggleBunnies! I would have to agree with you about the cake scented candle! All that would do would make me want to bake a cake and eat it!lol But, I must admit that since I don't have any kids, I do like to burn candles! I buy the ones in the jars so that they are pretty safe since I am always knocking things over and I do have two kittys who are all over everything! But, I buy them in stores where they only cost about $2.50 and they are nice size jar candles and smell great! My favorite is apple cinnamon or cinnamon! But, I'm sure not going to buy an $8 candle that smells like cake that's only going to make me hungry! That's crazy!

You got a point there, id rather buy the real thing instead of just smelling it. But some people have enough money to buy those kinds of stuff, personally even if i have the means i dont advice on buying those said products its more like a waste of resources for me. well at least thats my point of view bout buying such a thing ;)
