Conservative blacks are tired of being called uncle tom's.

By VALERIE BAUMAN, Associated Press Writer Valerie Bauman, Associated Press Writer – Tue Apr 6, 6:26 pm ET ALBANY, N.Y. – They've been called Oreos, traitors and Uncle Toms, and are used to having to defend their values. Now black conservatives are really taking heat for their involvement in the mostly white tea party movement — and for having the audacity to oppose the policies of the nation's first black president. "I've been told I hate myself. I've been called an Uncle Tom. I've been told I'm a spook at the door," said Timothy F. Johnson, chairman of the Frederick Douglass Foundation, a group of black conservatives who support free market principles and limited government. "Black Republicans find themselves always having to prove who they are. Because the assumption is the Republican Party is for whites and the Democratic Party is for blacks," he said. Johnson and other black conservatives say they were drawn to the tea party movement because of what they consider its commonsense fiscal values of controlled spending, less taxes and smaller government. The fact that they're black — or that most tea partyers are white — should have nothing to do with it, they say. "You have to be honest and true to yourself. What am I supposed to do, vote Democratic just to be popular? Just to fit in?" asked Clifton Bazar, a 45-year-old New Jersey freelance photographer and conservative blogger. Opponents have branded the tea party as a group of racists hiding behind economic concerns — and reports that some tea partyers were lobbing racist slurs at black congressmen during last month's heated health care vote give them ammunition. But these black conservatives don't consider racism representative of the movement as a whole — or race a reason to support it. Angela McGlowan, a black congressional candidate from Mississippi, said her tea party involvement is "not about a black or white issue." "It's not even about Republican or Democrat, from my standpoint," she told The Associated Press. "All of us are taxed too much." Still, she's in the minority. As a nascent grassroots movement with no registration or formal structure, there are no racial demographics available for the tea party movement; it's believed to include only a small number of blacks and Hispanics. Some black conservatives credit President Barack Obama's election — and their distaste for his policies — with inspiring them and motivating dozens of black Republicans to plan political runs in November. For black candidates like McGlowan, tea party events are a way to reach out to voters of all races with her conservative message. "I'm so proud to be a part of this movement! I want to tell you that a lot of people underestimate you guys," the former national political commentator for Fox News told the cheering crowd at a tea party rally in Nashville, Tenn., in February. Tea party voters represent a new model for these black conservatives — away from the black, liberal Democratic base located primarily in cities, and toward a black and white conservative base that extends into the suburbs. Black voters have overwhelmingly backed Democratic candidates, support that has only grown in recent years. In 2004, presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry won 88 percent of the black vote; four years later, 95 percent of black voters cast ballots for Obama. Black conservatives don't want to have to apologize for their divergent views. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100406/ap_on_re_us/us_tea_party_blacks So what do YOU think? The liberals are fond of saying their for MINORITIES....I wonder why not this one?

As a complete outsider, it seems weird that blacks are expected to be Democrat, rather than Republican. After all, the Republican party was founded by Abraham Lincoln.

I've tried the historical approach, they're not hearing it. History has been so twisted in our school's textbooks people don't believe what you tell them about it anyway. Slick move on their part...two generations who haven't a clue as to what they're giving up by electing these people to power.

Pretty worrying when someone native to a different country knows more than the average native about a really important part of your countries' history. Also, saying that people should vote/support someone because of their skin colour is pretty insulting. Both to the people doing the supporting - you're so shallow that you can't judge a persons worth other than by their colour - and the person they are "supposed" to support - you're policies are so worthless that the only thing we should judge you on is your colour.

How do you mean 'you're'? Me personally? Or Americans in general? I do not agree with the current administration in all respects. I am not a liberal, and the rest of the citizenry of America is fast becomming skeptical of the current liberal administration and Congress as well. They're recognizing the blantant socialization of our government and do not care for it. Americans are waking up to what has been going on for the last forty years, from the dumbing down of our schools, to the liberals agenda to destroy our Constitution.

If anything, it's a sign of progress in this country when people feel they can vote their beliefs regardless of race, etc.

I can only speak for myself, and it doesn't bother me at all. As for anybody else, well maybe some Democrats think the black vote belongs to them or something.

wow, so in the spirit of abolishing racism, blacks should NOT agree with conservatives. They should not believe in and practice personal responsibility. They should expect the government to feed, house, clothe and provide medical treatment. Hhmmm sounds suspiciously like slavery.....

They are called Uncle Toms for not backing Massa in the big White House....which is how I see it. Do as I say without using your mind, cause I own you. I admire ANYONE who can stand up and think for themselves. It seems it is a rare commodity these days.

The Liberals say that they are for the minorities simply because it is politically expedient. The Liberals only care about power and control over the people, and anyone who opposes that ideology is either a racist or a traitor to their race. The Liberals are responsible for keeping the minorities and poor down by promoting the Entitlement Mentality and by pushing class warfare. Taxing the rich to benefit the poor, punishing the hardworking and successful to benefit the lazy and non-productive is counterproductive and harms us all. If we make it harder for business to survive and be profitable, then we make it harder to generate jobs for everyone. Socialism is not the answer, and America did not become the envy of the world by using the Socialist model... we got that way through hard work, innovation, and capitalism, and by giving everyone an equal chance for success. The opposite of Capitalism is Communism, and Socialism is the transitional phase between the two. In short, the liberals are not for the minorities at all... and they will do anything required to advance their cause.

They're hypocrits (Democrats) to say they want choice for minorities and then when minorities choose for themselves, they're called names and marginalized by those who supposedly are the "only" ones on their side, the Democratic liberals. If this doesn't prove that they're liars I don't know how else to prove it!

I don't understand why our black citizens are so pro-democrat. Detroit has been dominated by democrats for decades and they have 50% unemployment. Everywhere democrats have the upper hand, the working people suffer. Republicans make up less than 50% of the Tea Party demographics. I empathize with those people you quoted. It's tough to be an outcast and a target of vitriol, even violence, because of your beliefs. But because of people like that, Americans are waking up and realizing we're about to lose our country. God bless them, and I hope their influence spreads far and wide. Remember that woman that we heard so often saying she wouldn't have to worry about her mortgage or putting gas in her car? I wonder how she's doing now?

I've lost track being offline for three whole months of all that is going on. Our small town newspaper and Springfield, MO news stations don't provide much national news. Not to mention I've also been without satellite TV and don't get FOX anymore. But I do listen to the radio when in the car, so I am trying to catch up with all that is happening. It was sorta nice to be out of the loop for awhile. Much less stress on the old nervous system. lol You are correct in your assessment of what happens whem Dems are in control. I live in the Ozarks of Missouri and the population is really discontent and most of them are poor and were long time Democrats. There's a lot of talk of voting them all out, or voting Independent. Ron Paul's name is mentioned alot. I've gotten use to being the hated or despised conservative. I also have resigned myself to being put down for being a believer in God and calling myself by the name Christian. I consider it an honor to be an outcast when the ruling elite are who they are. I am proud not to be identify with there policies and platforms. I see many who may not agree on all conservative issues, but who are willing to tolerate minor differences to get America back from those trying to destroy her.
