We have a nice abundance of radishes this year already. I was wondering what you could make with them besides salads? or eating them plain? I know I have an uncle who ate them in sandwiches.

You can use them in stirfry, if you do that, or you can cook them, believe it or not. They taste a little like turnips and can be mashed like turnips or added to a pot roast or soup/stew. I don't know if you can freeze them for cooking later, but maybe someone else will know.

They're probably a bit watery for freezing but I certainly second the advice of putting them in a stir fry, the taste great. Also, if you let a few plants go to flower and then seed the seed pods are also edible, they have a milder flavour than the root and can be used in salads or stir-fries the same way.

I forgot about eating the pods. I let one or two go to seed each year for the pods. They have a LOT of seed pods, so you won't need many plants. If you let the pods/seeds dry, you can sprout the seeds in the winter for a nice salad or sandwich treat.

I am making chicken soup from scratch today I was thinking about peeling some and sneaking them into my soup. Maybe a stir fry later this week? I've never heard of eating the pods though... only pods I've ever eaten are pea pods.

My hubby loes raddish. So I make it as a dish. I cut some onions, slit some green chilli and add it to 1 or 2 teaspoon of oil. Once they are a bit pinkish in colour I put in the finely cut raddish I use the leaves also. I cover it and cook on medium heat for 5 mins and after that add some salt to taste and again cook it for another 10 mins and they are ready to be served with chapati ( bread made with wheat flour). My hubby likes it with steamed rice. Hope you like it.

my kids won't touch anything spicy or w/ green chillies in it. Sounds like an interesting thing to make. Never heard of Chapati. It appears to be similar to a tortilla.

I can think of only a couple of thinfs i use them for other than what u mentioned. I like to gtrate them up in slaw, gives it a little kick & color. Everybody will frown on this one, lol & i haven't had it in years but love it. My grandmother use to take lettuce out of the garden, cut up onions & radishes & pour hot fried bacon grease over it. I'm sure it's not good for u but what is??lol

Hmm, I don't know a lot about radishes because I've never really been a fan of them myself. However, I have a lot of friends that are members of some of the local community supported agriculture farms and they end up with all kinds of interesting things in their weekly baskets. So, I've seen them recommending a book called "How to Cook Anything" so that they have ideas of what to do with those types of produce that they aren't familiar with. I might check into this book for some ideas.

Hi, 3SnuggleBunnies. I think that it would go well in a vegetable pizza. And how about cabbage stew. You can also try adding it to coleslaw too. That may taste nice.

I think you can cut them thin and add them to stir fry just before serving. They would add some crunch and a little bite.
