cats? inside? or outside?

I found some disgusting "stuff" in my bedroom floor the other day. I knew my cat had been throwing up quite a bit and thought she might have intestinal parasites...worms. I took her to the vet who declared, no, she had no worms but she did had hair balls and to keep her inside as I'd found her eating a rabbit... outside of course..... besides she herself(the cat) is a long haired black and white kitty. Now, question is: Do you all keep your cats inside? or do you let them do the inside/outside thing?

My cats spend most of their time inside but they're allowed to go out too. They're older so they spend more time inside where it's cooler. Instead of buying store bought hairball products I've used Vaseline petroleum jelly about every two weeks for years which my grandmother used to give it to her cats to help with hairballs. Mine never seem to have a problem with them even though two of them are long haired, too. One cat will lick it off my finger but with the other two I have to put a dab on the top of one paw which they lick off while giving me nasty looks. :)

Great tip! Those hairball remedies can be so expensive...but we usually have Vaseline around. Thanks much! I had one cat for a year before I found him a home and he threw up his food because he didn't chew it properly. He just wolfed it down and then would turn around an hour or so later and just throw it all back up. At first we thought it was because he had worms but we de-wormed him and he was still doing it. Then we tried him on the wet food and he stopped throwing up. I forgot to tell the gal who took him when I gave him to her (oops) but we discussed it later.

I have have had many cats as pets and none of them have ever been outside cats. I brought a Sealpoint Siamese and a White Persian with orange eyes from Europe with me when I came to the States.

I have been in the States for 33 years so Cleo and Sheilagh are long gone. I do have photos of them but not loaded on my computer. It was expensive to bring them here with my family. They had to make the long flight in the cargo area, they were together in one cage, but they survived and lived to be a ripe old age. Sheilagh the white Persian never went deaf due to her orange ayes as many white blue eyes animal go deaf.

Oh my! A sealpoint and a White Persian and orange eyes? How lovely ! I would never have those two outside either. I will never let my cats outside again. I think I was close to losing my hussie and I think I'd die if I lost her. She's been with me for over 10 years....... and to think you brought those lovely cats over from Europe....... How long have you been in the states? Does that cost a lot to bring cats that far? and is it taxing on the cats??? Do take care of them. Do you have pics of the cats? I need to down load some of my two, hussie and flash. they do bring smiles to my face:) Let me hear from you. hugs, quita

My cat stays inside. I have no doubt that he would enjoy the great outdoors, but I dont want to put up with the crap that having your cat be outdoors can produce. Plus I think it is safer and better for the cat by far to keep them inside.

I didn't used to agree with this thinking but I do now. Fact is we used to live where the cats could come and go as they pleased without worry of heavy traffic and be ok. Still the move we made in Oct. of'09 has brought on new fears for me and my cats. They are both getting older and I want them healthy for as long as I can provide that. So, my hussie and flash are now prisoners of the house and I give them dry food made specifically for indoor cats. I do thank you for your posting.. quita88

For his safety, our cat is indoors only. The only time he goes outside is to go to the vet, so he does not ever want to go outside. We brush or comb him daily, so he does not have hairballs.

I am glad to hear this about your cat. I wish I'd been smarter and done the same . I suppose tho living where we do now makes a big difference. I too brush both cats daily now but they both still try to slip out ....... I hope they get used to staying inside as I am afraid they will get run over or get really sick.

We have inside/outside cats. We also make sure we only have short haired cats here. A long haired cat should be brushed daily to prevent hair balls. I also give hairball meds during the heavy shedding periods. Cats that eat wild things rarely have hairball problems, nature takes care of them.

I do brush my cat daily and she won't be outside any more tho. I did catch her eating a rabbit and the vet that was a bad idea and that contributed to the hair ball problem. I am now making her eat dry foods for inside cats as well as brushing her every day. She is not happy with me....so sorry, but I don't want her to be sick or even die if she got all bound up. Thank you for your advice. How many cats do you have? I have two and they are now housebound. quita88

Ah good! My cat hussie sleeps with me most nights. Flash sleeps very close or tries to sleep on my head ! He's a big cat too. Since I've kept them in the house they don't seem to really mind not going out. I do kind of hate it cuz I know how they like to hunt but I love my birds too and besides I was looking at them getting run over and couldn't live with that so I did as the vet said and am keeping them in. They are supposed to be healthier and live a lot longer.

I bought a harness for cats yesterday and she hates it! but we've been about 1/2 way successful after 3 tries LOL but she growled and hissed at me.............broke my heart LOL but, I told her, if she wants to get out and see the world and still stay healthy she has to put the harness on and let me lead her............she still was not happy LOL I am glad you have your cats under control. I love my two cats and want them with me for a long time. I am not being cruel to them, I am being protective. There is a difference.

I keep my cat inside a cage during night time but he is set free to roam in our backyard during the day time. He rarely goes outside the house to explore, except when he sees a fellow cat, and then they start to fight. Lol. But he's pretty content to sleep all day and hunt for some birds in the backyard.

Oh he does get out of the yard, i see him sometimes atop somebody else's roof hehe. But he only does that occasionally. He's not really that adventurous. The most duration of time that he's been away is like 3 hours only lol.

Cats are fairly flexible if they are fed LOL but if this is your cat, what a beauty ! Still , I wonder why he or she doesn't get out of the yard? I feed birds and I hate to think I am baiting the birds for my cats to feast one !

Hi quita! Once a cat goes outside, I find it to be really cruel to keep them inside. I don't care what any vet says. I say this, how would you like to be kept inside all the time? You wouldn't like it one bit so why should the cat? Now if they were raised indoors and kept inside, that's different but once a cat knows the outdoors, to change that would be very cruel. Now when your cat gets to coughing like that again, make sure you have some hair ball remedy on hand so you can give some to your cat. What it does is, it's a very sticky laxative substance and it adheres to the hair that's stuck in your cats throat and moves it through the bowel tract and out it goes! LOL Sometimes it takes more than once to get it all out. Some cats will lick it off of your fingers and some won't. If your cat won't then put some on their paws and legs and rub it in good so that when they shake their paws, it won't get all over your walls and floors. They'll lick it off and clean themselves up. You can get the hair ball remedy at walmart in the cat food section.

I only let one of my cats go outside. He would stay on the porch or with me so I didn't worry too much about him getting hurt. The rest of them stayed inside because I was to afraid to let them out. When I tried to brush them, they thought I was playing with them and I would end up all scratched up. Because of this I probably didn't brush them as much as I should have. Someone was always throwing up a fur ball and I would usually step in it. UGH!

Cats are independent creatures and with them wanting to play that is just their nature and part of them loving you. However, the hair balls are gross and could be life threatening if left unattended. A member told me to use a dab of Vaseline on one of their paws and that helps with the hairballs. Also, you can buy a little pkg of oats in the pet dept . at WAl Mart and grow them in a small pot and let your cats eat those and keep them growing in another pot and that gives them the greenery they need. As far as mine goes, I brush, they fight me..........I love them so I keep them in now. They hate me ! it's only been a few days and they do growl at me ...they both escaped today and I caught them and wow! you would have thought I was their worst enemy ! But, gotta love 'em.

A vet told me one time to put Vaseline on their paws. I used to do that, but I didn't have to put it on their paws. They loved it, and would just lick it off of my finger. It might have helped with the fur balls, but they still got them.

My Cat Minnie - This is Minnie, doing the normal running into the bathroom, to get the water from the tap.
We have a cat that is black and white too... she is also quite long haired and often has fur balls. While she has thrown up in the house on a couple of occasions I have kind of made her realise that she needs to go outside to do it. I did this by every time I heard her reaching, or coughing, I knew she was getting ready to throw it up, so I put her outside. Now she does go out the cat flap when she has a hairball, but now, she has had times where she does it right in the middle of my pathway, so I have to clear it up so my little boy does not tread in it. As I said I have a cat flap, and she comes and goes as she pleases. She mainly goes out at night and early morning though, during the day she likes to sleep on the window sill. She goes out at night and scares foxes away, I think when we go to bed she kind of goes out to watch the house, I have actually seen her race after a fox, and it was a female fox, because it just had this awful scream to it, which woke me up about 2am a few weeks ago. Have included photo of my cat below

Oh my ! Minnie looks like my cat, hussie !! long hair and all ! I don't have a flap but I do get opossums and raccoons too here as well as skunks so a flap would be only a welcome mat for those critters. My two cats, hussie and flash are doing ok with being held prisoner LOL but I also live close to a lake and there is lake road behind me and the traffic is terrible. Hussie was the worst at "going fishing" all hours and I was afraid she'd get run over too. The vet said cats are or can be happy if I provide a window for them to look out of. I do have lots of birds and the cats sit in the window and flip their tails ! I know they'd love to be out and hunting but not now........I just lost one cat to old age and one dog to cancer so I can't handle losing another loved one. Your boy looks so cute by the way! How old is he? quita88

At present I live in an area that is overrun with stray and feral cats. I have had cats all my life...since I was 4 years old...and have rescued them from the streets many times. I do not declaw my cats so that they can go outside. It is natural and good for a cat to hunt and eat its prey and it is in their nature to do so. I used to have a kitty door until my daughter broke it. Now I'm saving up for another one because, frankly, I'm sick of the kitty litter getting tracked all over my house. I much prefer for my cats to go potty outside and with little encouragement, they will. One thing that I do make sure of, though, before putting my cats out, is that they have flea collars on or else I'll use the drops but either way they don't go out unless they have some protection. At present I have four house cats and am working with two ferals that hang around my porch. Among my house cats only one is going outside right now because she's the only one with a flea collar. Chester keeps losing his flea collars so I'm going to have to start getting the drops for him. Smoky is still a little scaredy since I took him in a year ago so I don't think I want to let him out quite yet for fear he may not come home. Spooky, on the other hand, is one we just took in a few days ago and so he stays inside for the same reason as Spooky. I hope by next spring to find a home for Spooky and get a cat door so that the rest of my kitties can come and go. If you'd like to read some stories about my cats and the work I do, you can check out my blog at http://thecatladyrules.blogspot.com I dream of the day when I won't have to keep a litter box in my house anymore.

I understand that I really do and I think it would be nice not to have litter boxes in the house but there is going to be that one time that one cat will need a box and then you'll have a problem. I too have several strays here and several sizes... my neighbor says he's going to "do away" with some but never does cuz his wife says NO, they kill too many mice! I think it's good for a cat to hunt too and their primal instinct is to hunt, however mine are spoiled and getting older and I want to keep them around as long as I can. I read your page and it is a very nice site.

Thank you for looking at my blog. Interesting thing about the point you make...I had a cat once that I never kept a litter box for. Whenever he got stuck inside, he would go in the tub. But as long as I have a kitty door that my cats can go in and out at will, that's not a problem at all. I just need to get another kitty door.

I think cats are best left outside, when I had a cat we did have a room for it in the garden shed and we had a bed for it. She would just sleep in there, when they're kittens you must keep them indoors because they can easily get hurt or lost and it's just nice to have a cute little thing indoors lol. When we kept her indoors and she got angry at my mum she would poo on my mum's bed lol she was a smart little cat. Miss her.

HI, I am not getting these posts.........but if you like cats outside, then you keep yours out. How disgusting ! If you miss her, where did she go???????

Hi Gabs ! My cats are doing great inside...no, they don't particularly like it, but all the same they are well and I give them two windows to look out of to see the outside. That was a tip from a lady who herself keeps her cats in. I feed birds and I also hated to think I was baiting the birds for my cats dinner.. and, too now they wont' get worms from the wildlife they were eating. So, they are healthier in the long run too. hugs to you girl, quita :)

My cats have always been indoor cats because that's where cats are supposed to be kept. They are domesticated animals who should be kept indoors for safety reasons. Our town also has a law against cats (and dogs) running at large (not on their own property and not leashed). Outdoors is not a safe environment for cats.

My cats are indoor cats. I have two that do come out with me, but only when I am out smoking and they are confined to the yard, If they leave the yard, they go in. The one cat I found so she has a habit of being outside. The other is her son, and I wish I would not have let him out. He got fleas and is allergic to the bites. Of course he brought them in to share with his brothers. Now I have to frontline them and spray the house and yard with chemicals. I do not like having them around the chemicals, and I do not like that I have to get them their shots because they can develop a cancer. If I had kept them indoors I may not have this problem. Plus, if the cat is strictly indoors one doesn't need to worry about shots or having them get into something they shouldn't. Some people are mean to cats, and will poison them or try to run them over. They may get into a fight with another cat or some other animal that could kill them. Raccoons abound in the city as well as the country and they can be very vicious creatures. They do have cat pens that will allow you to let your kitty play outside and be confined at the same time. For a cat that is used to having the run of the neighborhood this may be a good option for you. Happy Mylotting!

I agree with you except for the part of the cancer with their shots. What shots? Vaccinations? What about feline leukemia and distemper? They can get those inside too. I don't like having my cats around chemicals either. I didn't know they had cat pens for cats to be outside tho. thanks for the posting.

My cat is an inside only cat. He is deathly afraid of cars because we found him as a stray kitten and the people who had him before us said they were moving and didn't want to take him with them so they tried to run over him :( How can people be so cruel? He has gotten outside a few times and when he came home he was covered with bites and scratches from strays because we live in a mobile home park and people drop them off around here all the time. He had to go to the vet both times he got out so we make it a point to make sure he is an inside only cat. Oddly enough my cat likes the taste of Vaseline. He comes over and meows when we are getting it out of the cupboard and licks it off our fingers.

People are cruel. I found my dog , Galeena in a humane society facility in Montana and both her front legs were broken. The lady who worked there said the best they knew someone found her on the interstate outside of Butte , Mt. and she had apparently been thrown out a window and her front legs broken... So yes, I know people can be cruel. As to your cat. Isn't he lucky to have found you !? Vaseline is great for hair balls as I've learned here on mylot as I have two cats and two dogs. Let him have all the vaseline he wants within reason and just love him. He deserves that. You deserve this cat... God bless, quita88
