Beat the Heat

Well, once again we've entered into a period in our area where there is a heatwave. Today looks like it is going to be the hottest day of the year so far. That got me to thinking, what are some of the ways that other people on mylot use to beat the heat? Us, we are going to stay inside most of the day in the airconditioning. But, I'm thinking that later this afternoon we are going to head to the swimming pool for a couple of hours because of the fact that my daughter does have a swim meet this afternoon and we will be able to cool of before hand and also we will be able to have the best seats in the house for the swim meet. Share with me the ways that your family beats the heat.

Summer time has passed for us here in the Philippines although it's still hot despite the afternoon rains everyday. WEll, we beat the summerheat going to rivers, beaches and swimming pools. It cuts costs on the power bills too coz you don't have to turn up the aircon of fans to cool down.

You are right. We still have to be careful about our exposure to the sun, but other than that, there isn't anything that is much better than a day in the water of some sort.

Made that mistake earlier in the summer with my youngest niece, it won't be happening again though because I've been keeping sunblock in my purse.

Heat can really slow down a persons activity.. like you said .. stay indoors. but heading to the pool is a great idea.i think having some chilled drinks and watching movies is good.. the place where i stay does not have many swimming pools and they are all outdoor pools so it get more hot and unhygienic .. so kind of avoid it.. but instead relax in my bath tub..

I would say you are very lucky to have a pool in your back yard.. the sun tan can be very horrible and causes alot of damage to the skin. Best timing is the late evenings when the sun has gone down.

Well, it isn't in our back yard, but rather in my mother's backyard. Still, it is a pool that is accessible to us any hour of the day or night.

I love spending time at the pool, but I also try to avoid it in the middle of the day when the sun is the hottest because the last thing that I want is for the kids to get a sunburn or heat exhaustion or worse. We will be heading to the pool in my mom's back yard here in about an hour or so.

If it's a weekend and it's really, really hot, going to either San Francisco or Lake Tahoe is an option. Either direction, it's about a 2 hour drive. There are also rivers, lakes and caves around here. For closer and cheaper, there's always the movie theater or the pool. On work days, there's air conditioning...

Oh yes, I definitely couldn't begin to imagine going back to a time in my life where we didn't have air conditioning in our house. That is one of the things that we do on a regular basis in our family. But, we really like to be outdoors, which is one of the reasons that the pool is such an important option for us.

The heat is very hard on me so I am in the house by 10:00AM and thst's it. It doesn't cool off around her until after 8 at night. But it does cool off at night except when we have thunder and lightning, that seems to hold the heat near the ground.

You are right, there is definitely more heat that is maintained on the surface of the earth when the atmosphere above us is more overcast. Take care and don't let yourself get too hot.

hi dora, ours here is so hot during noon like the sun bites the skin. ouch! i prefer staying in the office (as it is still working day today). just as i got home now, 11pm, there was already thunder and i see lightning in the sky hence i knew it is going to be a cold night. during weekends and when it is hot, i stay in my room and read novels or do online earning or... it becomes a lazy day, i sleep. cheers, ann

You know, there really are times that I wish that I was able to just be lazy. However, with the two children, it isn't something that it is possible for me to ever get to do.

Luckily we still have June gloom in the mornings . . . but the afternoons are getting hotter. But we know this is only the beginning . . . the hotter days are surely coming are way. I don't even want to think about the heatwave - but it's Southern CA - and it's inevitable. Well, we are still going out in the afternoons because my daughter has classes there . . . and they have AC there, so I can save on AC by going there - ha ha. Hopefully we'll be going to other indoor places with AC too - like the malls. I'm sure we'll dip into the pool here too . . . luckily we have 2 pools in the complex - but both are not heated - brrrrr. But otherwise we'll be staying indoors - baby boy still has to get his nap time in!

It has been so warm so far this summer for us that pool has actually been quite warm for a long time. I don't like the really cold water, but I've been able to get in almost from the time that school let out. I'll be headed to my mother's house and her pool after while and I'm sure that it is going to be very warm because it is much smaller than the olympic pools that we usually swim in.

It tends to get somewhat hot in here as well. However, it is still a whole heck of a lot better than being outside in the heat with no way of relief.

hi dorannmwin we are still having June like weather with overcast mo rnings and sun out later in the afternoon, so no hear spells yet. I stay in in air conditioned rooms , wear as little as possible and try to keep myself occupied in something so I won't think so much abut the heat. I know it will be coming in July as it always does and each time seems a bit hotter than last year. I do wish I could get to a swimming pool close by here. I love to swim and its such good exercise for me as I have severe arthritis in both knees. My son lives in a different apt a few miles from here so he can come see me each week.

Swimming really is perhaps one of the best forms of exercise that a person can have. I've had arthritis in my left ankle since I was a child from breaking it in the growth plate. Had I never had that break, I might have never realized my love of swimming.

Stay in the air conditioning, turn on all the fans and the swimming pool is good too, like you mentioned. Have fun at the pool and the swim meet!

We had a pretty good time at the swimming pool. Of course, it does get on my nerves when the lifeguards whistle at the kids for doing things that are harmless. Heck, I'm right there with them and though I'm not certified anymore, I was a certified lifeguard when I was their age.

In the office I have air conditioning but although I have an ac in one bedroom it is not used s it is not energy efficient and besides that we have the highest rates for electricity in the world! fortunately I live in the hills and s it is cooler. I have ,latticed white window boxes over my windows and this prevents the sun from coming in. It really does cool down the bedrooms and my bedroom windows are open. I have large ceiling fans in all rooms and this is a good help to us plus one standing fan that we use if necessary as well. We eat outside a lot in the evenings when the sun has gone down and there is a lovely breeze. Good luck to your daughter today and I hope that you keep cool!

We are lucky to have the central air that we have in our home, but I did discover last month how truly expensive it can be. However, we also have several ceiling fans in the house that help a lot and I want to buy a tower fan for our bedroom that would be a big help as well. I too like to eat outside after the sun has gone down, but right now there are so many bugs that it really isn't possible.

Hello doransmwim, That is cool where we are it is like 100 degrees plus near Philadelphia and we are rolling brown outs to help circuit of electicity for people using there ac. We had them yesterday but did not affect our particluar area but 4000 people were affected by this. You would think the price we pay for heat or the ac we would not need rolling burn outs to save on the power grid... very strange indeed. Tommorrow I have 6 hour drive going past the Poconos pick up my daughter who is counselor at camp and bring her back home for 1 week break... I dread this drive and I do have ac in the car but still just the heat gets to you when you are driving etc... Enjoy the swimming pool and I hope your daughter does well in the swim heat. Thanks and have a great day! Sincerley unique16

She did really well in the swim meet in my opinion. She got two fourth place finishes and one third place finish. Both of these were out of six swimmers, so I was really, really proud of her. She has really come a long way since the season started a month ago.
