for a one-year-old little boy. One of my best friend's sons is turning one tomorrow. They aren't able to give him a lot for his birthday because the father has been cut off from his unemployment as of last week and has yet to get a job of any sort yet. And he said that they can only spend twenty dollars on him so I would like to do something special for him. My children are significantly passed that age now so I can't really remember what I got for them when they were that age. So, suggestions are very much welcomed. I don't want to spend too much on him though.

I wanted to suggest books, but apparently I'm not the only one who think that that's a great idea :) How about dvd's of educational children shows or a Pixar movie or a Disney movie? When I was a kid, my parents put on Annie or Alice in Wonderland everyday. Cars by Pixar would be a good selection, since the birthday celebrant is a boy.

Movies are another thing that makes a great suggestion. I know that my children love to have movies and I will definitely keep this in mind for the next time.

Well, if he was older than a year old, I would have thought that you were on the right track. However, he is far too young for that.

perhaps a book that the parents can read to the birthday boy? it is never too young to instill the love of reading!

This is a great idea. I ended up going shopping with his mother and we both picked out toys for him and split the cost of one because they had a buy one, get one free deal.

You have some good suggestions already! I don't know how much is too much, but how about a family one year pass to someplace the local zoo? That way the whole family and the birthday boy can enjoy the gift all year round! I think at our local zoo, a family pass is like $75 but online or because we got on the mailing list, it was down to $65 - then $55 later in the year. There is a community college about a half hour from us, and they have a mini zoo that is open only on weekends . . . $5 per adult, and $4 per child . . . you can get ticket gifts for all of them for a few hours worth of fun. Anyway, my point is, if you can find a local venue that the whole family can enjoy with their son, it'd be special for the son and his parents who also seem to need their spirits lifted right now. I think that'd truly be special . . . instead of a getting the boy a toy that he's only going to play with a few months.

Those are great ideas. I think that I am going to try to remember that for the future when we are invited to more birthday parties. This would be a great suggestion for children that are a little bit older.

I was trying to think up some other possible places . . . *Indoor playgrounds . . . they usually have a one month pass, or a pass for X amount of entries. Lots of places have stuff for infants/toddlers. *Farms - entry for the whole family. *Aquariums - entry for the whole family.

You can actually cook food for him as added for dining in. Other than that better to give him clothes, socks, or any other daily needs for the baby rather than toys. Or actually if you still have your budget then you can give him 1 toy with balloons as well to make his day very special.

I love doing clothes for gifts because I feel like it takes a little bit away from their parent's necessities for their children. I've always been one that tries to think in a practical manner.

It is hard to judge what thing would be better for this kid. I think easy is buy a gift for a teenager. But, If we talk about one year old child you can buy some soft toy it is a expensive gift, but If you want to economic your money. You can buy little piano for child and when child press a button a melody will play. My cousin have a little boy now he have a one year and seven months, but when he have a one year I think we buy a little tractor and little t-shirt with trousers for he size. It is hard to judge in nowadays If yo want to buy a good gift it is hard to find a cheap one. I hope you will buy a good gift for your friend son. Good luck, Have a nice day!

What I ended up getting for him was a little driver set with a steering wheel, turn signals, a horn and everything. It also talks and is pretty much an educational toy. I think it is super cute.

Well, at least at his party, it seemed that this was his favorite gift. I've yet to be at his house when he was playing with his new toys though.

I reccomend some clothing and a toy. At age 1 he is going to be growing very fast and clothing will definatly be appreciated by the parents. A truck or plushie would be played with by the little boy. I think however that given the age the focus should be on what the parents could use for the child, especially given their financial situation. The little boy definatly won't be able to remember what you gave him and is probably too young to play with toys that are overly extravagant. I am sure that no matter what you give him it will be very much appreciated :)

I would have gotten some clothes for him, but I knew that a lot of the extended family sent clothes for his first birthday so I opted to not take that route. It is a great suggestion though. Thank you very much.

dorannmwin as everyone else has suggested the other things I would suggest a set of Mozart for toddlers as the selection' is of soothing music and also music that stimulates the infant brain according to a lot of psychologists too. It seems these are specially soothing pieces and way back when Mozart was still and composing he and some other composers had put together some special pieces that the then doctors felt were beneficial to small children.

That is a great idea as well. I wish I would have seen this before I ended up at the store because it would have been a gift for the little one but both he and his sister would have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Hi ,dorannmwin! As far as I am concerned, I think the little is just about one year old. I think if you can take him in or out side the house to take some special photos to commemorate his one year old birthday. I think this can be a very special one and will cost you so much. Just give you a suggestion here. Happy you can enjoy it!Have a nice day!

I did also tell his mother that I wanted to take him out one afternoon and do some one year old pictures for him because they don't have the money to have them professionally done right now and I would love to eventually be able to have my own small photography business so this would work as a double benefit, a benefit for them to have special 1 year pictures of their son and I know that Stace would let me use them to start building a portfolio.

Hi dorannmwin, convey my wishes to him happy birthday and blessing too. You can gift him some fixed deposit kind of thing for 10 years like that so that the amount will be doubled at the time of maturity. That he can use it for his higher studies. May be with few dollars but i feel it is worth to him.

That is a wonderful idea as well. In fact, I believe we are going to start doing something like this for my children and for my nieces starting this year. I think that it would be a better benefit to them in the long run than toys at this point.

I think you could buy a small toy for he . little boy like it very much . Or give him a comic book as his birthday gift . It is not expensive for you , but it can bring him laugh . That is my views .

That is a neat idea. We like books and such a lot and I know that is what I want to do when it is time for Christmas gifts in the next few months.

my cousin's son also turned one about two weeks ago and instead of buying him toys my cousin requested to just buy him either a can of milk formula his son is taking or a pack of disposable diapers. I just bought him diapers and an additional small ball! That would also be a help for them I think. And would also not cost you much.

That is neat, I've seen that done for baby showers, but I've never seen that done for a first birthday. It really is a very creative idea for a first birthday.

If I remember correctly babies that age love bright colors and anything they can put into their mouth or make noise with. Also he will start to really out grow his cloths. If all else fails how about a gift certificate so his parents can choose.

I guess in a certain sense you could say that all else failed. His mom and I went shopping together and chose his birthday gifts together as well. We ended up getting him some educational toys that were on sale buy one get one free.

Seriously, it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is the love and bond the child feels toward the toy at his age. A toy car or a teddy bear can be special enough. For a child his age, especially at one, price doesn't matter.
@dorannmwin (36392)

No, price wasn't something that mattered to me very much. It was more that I wanted him to have a toy of his own that he would be able to use for a fairly long period of time.

If I were you I would buy him a little piano or a very appropriate gift is one of the games which develops child's brain and skills and they can get better orientation about the surrounding world. Appropriate games for kids at the age of 1 are games with cubes, stars, and triangles where they can put them in the right places or a game with indicating lights where the child can push buttons and therefor can recognize the lights and the sounds the game makes. I hope I've helped and I pray for the child to feel love and support from its parents, because when there is no money flow in one's family there can be huge brawls and scandals. I hope the father gets a new job very soon.

That is pretty much what I ended up getting for him. The toy is educational in both English and Spanish and I feel that he will also get a lot of use out of it in the next couple of years.
