My daugher had the same problem. I found this website where you can make things to donate...like one she is doing is crocheting 2x2 foot blankets that are given to mothers whose babies pass away at birth....they use the to bury them in....also she is making stocking hats for veterans....

Maybe you can get a cat and let him have fun with it. They like to play with yarn. LOL

I knitted a baby blanket from leftover yarn and it turned out really pretty. I used a different color for each row and tied the next color at the end and used that for a fringe. When I was finished, I brushed the fringe and trimmed it so it was even.

There are lots of things you can do with scrap yarn. If you go to lionbrand.com (not a referral link) they list a bunch of nonprofit sites that you can crochet for, some of these are baby caps which could be done in complementary colors of yarn and donated or you can make squares of a certain size for Warm Up America who will them attach your squares to others to make blankets for those that have none. There are fun and productive ways to use that leftover yarn. Have fun.

I too have little balls of left over yarn all over the place, two baskets on my book shelf at the moment..lol! I actually inherited a weave-it loom set. In the set I have three different size hand looms, I can use up my yarn making 8", 4" ND 2" squares. I then use the squares to make "patchwork" projects. My favorite so far has been the shopping bags I made for myself. I have also been making one square (8") out of the yarn I use for each project I make for my girls. I knit them socks, hats and sweaters each year. So I put these squares away in a box I have aside with their names on them. My plan is to some day put the squares together and make an afghan with what I hope will be a lot of memories of this pair of socks or that favorite sweater. I also have squares cut from favorite clothing o make a quilt for each of them later. I have big plans let's see if I can pull them off as the oldest is 11 and the youngest is almost 3 months. Any way this little hand loom is easy to use, easy to take with you any where and fun. They can be hard to find though. I have seen them on Ebay and I am including a link to a website all about them. http://www.eloomanation.com/. I also have done stripe afghans, or did before I got the loom. This is where I would knit or crochet until the yarn ran out then just added on a new yarn. They are very colorful and surprisingly lovely. The granny square is also another option. The squares can be used to make blankets, sweaters any ponchos, other items as well I am sure.

You didn't mention if it was from crochet or knitting projects. If it's crochet there are many scrap project including granny squares and sampler blankets. Just do a search on scrap yarn projects & see what catches your eye. But I've heard of people using their tiny scraps as filler in projects that need to be stuffed as well.
