Our local JoAnn's Fabrics is closing and moving 20 miles away! Bummer!

At the end of this month our local JoAnn's Fabrics is moving to another town. They are making a bigger store. I think of how often I go out there and maybe have taken for granted the fact that they are in town so it's easy to just run out there anytime I want and not really appreciate the fact that they are so handy. Now I'll have to drive 20 miles to even get a spool of thread! Our Walmart remodeled and took out most of their craft supplies including all there fabric. I don't know why they came to the decision to leave town....they were offered a bigger store for little or no rent but the offer didn't help. We do have two scrapbooking stores though and that helps...but man am I going to miss them! Have you had a store move on and leave you high and dry? How far to you have to go to get craft supplies?

The biggest thing I will miss is the sewing department...the craft things I can get at Walmart...or enough to get by with.

it is really a big factor for stores that are moving out to places farther than we usually are comfortable with, because we have develop a habit going to that store... or especially we have more convenience with the store around... well, we better get adjusted to the changes....

Would be nice if you could call JoAnn's, make an order and have them send it to you without charging for postage. Would save you from running back and forth 40 miles roundtrip. We live about 10 miles from a Walmart but I understand they are going to stop stocking plastic canvas. We are only about 5 miles from Michael's so I would make the trip over there when I run out of yarn and plastic canvas. I do have a fairly large supply of yarn right now in the house so I am probably set for the winter. Have to pay a little more for everything but I don't have much of a choice.

Yeah....it's just that if you need something to finish a project now I have to drive to get it! It's hard sometimes to know exactly what you need or how you want something to look until you are just about finished...that would mean another trip. I am tryig to stock up on a few things...

I know exactly what you are saying. It's happened to me before even though I try to keep enough stock, usually it's yarn, to finish a project. It's hard to match yarn even if it's from the same dye lot at a later time. Frustrating!

Because I live in a large city, I am fortunate to have a JoAnn's very near, a Handcock not that far and bead stores not too far either. I do find that Walmart taking out their fabric really annoying!

Me too....I wonder why they did that? They are starting to bring back a few of their scrapping things but we have two scrapping stores in town and I like doing other crafts too....you are lucky to have them all right there!

I feel for you Jill, I experienced this in the last few months..I don't know if you remember, but about 2-3 years ago someone posted here about walmart getting rid of their fabric and crafts section and there was a link where I could contact my local walmart. They replied and said they are not getting rid of it. And they didn't, until a few months back and now I have to go into the next county for another walmart of the next state for something like JoAnn's. (When I say next state, it is only a 25 minute drive but further than a 5-7 minute drive into town here) It really sucks, though I don't have the money for anything, or any creative ideas, if I did, I would have to drive further...

That's awful, the same thing happen to me a year ago and I loved shopping at JoAnns. Now if I want to shop there I have to drive clear across town and then the store that is there is not even half the size of the one that was on my side of town. I wish so bad they had left this one open on my side of town because I always shopped there.

I guess enough people don't buy craft items for Wal-mart to carry those items anymore. They used to have a fairly large section. Where I grew up we didn't have a craft store at all and we had to drive an hour and a half to get anything. Now I live in the Los Angeles area and I have two Joanns fairly close so I don't have to go far at all in fact one is on my way to work. Sorry that your store is moving, that will be inconvenient for you. Maybe you can try buying online instead of driving all that way. Joanns does have an online store.

I am not into crafts but if I were there are tons of stores nearby that sell craft supplies. There's a Jo-Ann Fabrics, there's a Michael's.. actually there's quite a few of them depending on how far I want to go.. then there's a Walmart every 15 minutes. I'd be all set. Though when the recession started hitting so hard we did lose a lot of good stores. Many nearby furniture stores closed down. We had a couple of stores called Steve & Barry's that sold really cheap clothes (like I got a jacket for $10) and they all closed down. Our closest video store closed down so now we have to drive 20 minutes to rent a video. The recession sucks! LOL

tHAT'S TOO BAD, I CAN TELL U WILL REALLY MISS IT.I don't buy craft supplies but the Fred's store out my way moved to another town a few years back & i still miss it. I never could figure out why they did that. The town they moved to was smaller than ours. We have nothing on our side of town now but a convenience store & u know how high they are with their prices. I hate having to drive miles to get a loaf of bread. grrrr.
