Im sorry to be so vague but I was watching the news this morning and it was talking about how kids are now using cough syrup with dxm(dextromethorphan) in it. Come to find out they are using this because its over the counter and easy to get. WHY? What has happened to the family unit. No one seems to be high on life anymore. When I was growing up, family meant something. We sat down and ate together. The most you heard about was that my uncles went behind the house to smoke their funny cigarettes. lol Now a days all we hear about is abuse, drugs, and hate. What has happened. What's your view on this?

It's not a new thing, using cough syrups to get high. There used to be an ingredient in one of the bigger selling cough mixtures that was hallucinogenic and once this was discovered the sales went through the roof. I think one of the main problems is that life these days is all about gratifcation and instant gratification too (although that isn't fast enough for some people). People are so busy trying to feel "good" that they don't know how to feel normal any more.

Well we cant say kids these days are stupid. As I was reading this article, the reasons stated for using this was that its not illegal to buy, and readily available. I believe this has alot to do with the fall of the family unit. Between divorce and young pregnancies, there is alot that comes out of both of these situations if not handled correctly. I was a young parent. I understand how hard it is. Im afraid though that I had a choice. Children learn better from actions then they do words. If they're seeing mom and dad breaking up or cheating or hitting, etc. They will think its ok. That's why we must think before we act so that we're not leading children down the wrong path. Thanks for your input. dl

I think that there are far too many parents these days that don't pay nearly enough attention to their children. It seems like most of the kids in our neighborhood are out running the streets from the time that they get home from school until the time that they need to be in bed. Most of the time I let the kids into my house, so at least I know that they are safe. However, it makes me very sad that their parents don't care more about them.

HI DL... The times have changed... And everything is changing so fast that even I- who is only 27- say the same old mantra,'It wasn't like this in our times...' which makes me wonder, How old I am!!! We have been unfortunate to have to live in such times as this... I feel it this way! We can't change it... The kids who use that syrup get high... It is cheap, it is sold legally etc... But it harms, all the same!!! One must learn to live in these times... because we cant change it... Sometimes I feel that if I don't learn to live with the time, I'll fall behind and will be forgotten soon... Feel stupid!!!

hi dloveli I was sort of shocked when last winter I w ent to him for something for my cough that would not shoot up my blood sugar, I am a diabetic, and he said to get Coricidin HbP for diabetics and people who bave high blood pressure. He said you will probably have to ask the pharmacist for it as they had to take it off the shelves. I asked why on earth. He told me teens were taking it to get high and turned on by the stuff. The stuff does not even taste all that great. I think a lot of teens now days just run loose with no adult supervision at all. maybe some parents both have to work just to keep the home paid for and f eed their families. This product is supposed to be used by a teaspoonful every six hours not just slugged down like a soft drink. That product also contained dextromethorphan, I always just took as little of it as I could as I did not like the way it made me feel at all. but it does stop a cough.

the family unit seems to be collapsing. the world is growing and the number of dysfunctional families are growing, too. sad, but true.
