Friends the nearest sea beach is about 350 kms away from my home. Normally we can’t enjoy sea foods. In the fish market, sea fish, prawns, crabs are available, but they are at least 30 hours old, some are more, smelly, rotten. I had been to a friend’s home in our state capital Bhubaneswar, which just 70 kms away from the sea. My friend’s wife is a good cook. She made special sea food items. I enjoyed eating with them. But one thing I found, the fish tasted a bit more salty and there was a distinct smell, which I don’t find in freshwater fish or prawns. Is it normal? Do you enjoy eating sea foods, what is your favorite? Please share. Professor

Sea foods are favorite to me always. Crab fry is my favorite sea food dish. The taste of sea foods is terrific and i was very much addicted to it. My mother cooks me sea food in a delicious way and i will not forget her combination of taste.

Fish and shellfish taken from the ocean tends to have a bit of a briny flavor. Not always noticeable, but it's there. It's a side effect of the environment in which they live. But yes, there is a difference in flavor. For example, salt water clams and fresh water clams taste different from one another. Salt water clams are briny while fresh water clams are sweeter.

Hi, I love to eat seafood and I am eating almost all kind of seafood. I love to eat fish and prawns, they are my favourite. I cook fishes almost every week, since my son is not eating meat, so fish is the best dish for him. I always went to wet market to get the fresh fish and I prefer to have it steam rather than fried because I don't like to eat frying food.

There is definitely a distinct taste to seafood that is completely fresh versus seafood that has been flash frozen or has travelled for a period of time. For lack of a better way to say it, fresh seafood tends to taste fishier than seafood that has been stored in some way for a period of time, no matter how short an amount of time that might have been. I think that part of it could be that the very fresh from the sea food hasn't been in any tanks that have water with specific criteria for storage.

When I have time in summer I like to go and fish myself. I mostly enjoy octopus above all which is cooked with olive oil, tomato, garlic and a little bit of vinegar. Fishes smell normally a lot and some fishes are put to salt to stay longer in the market. Some quick indicator to tell if fish is not fresh is its eyes which can feel like water in touch and its color is close to red.

hi p rofessor that distinct smell should not have been there, as that show the fish is not fresh but has been moving around before your friends bought it. good fresh fish should not have any odor specially a sort of uriney type of odor which means the fish is starting to spoil. we get ours frozen here so its safe to eat also we can go down to the Newport beach pier and buy fish just caught by the pound and oh they are so much better than those in our supermarkets. wow such a difference. good fish should not have an odor at all.I love halibut, salmon and the bit srhimp so much but they must be fresh.lol

Seafood is supposed to be good for you but I personally don't go for it! The only fish I really like is tinned tuna! I don't like the look of prawns and I don't go for the smell either, it really makes my stomach turn! I would love to say that I enjoy eating sea food, I'm sure that it will add a few years to my life span but I'm kind of giving up on the idea that I will ever enjoy seafood! The only other fish that I like comes with breadcrumbs on, something easy that go into the oven for twenty minutes. Andrew

I really like seafood. I can't name one in particular but I rarely try something that I don't like. The one thing I've noticed - I live way inland...no salt water anywhere for miles and miles.. Yet I see trucks setting up offering "fresh shrimp" I'm thinking it's not too fresh!

Most seafood should be cooked to an internal temperature of 145F. I love steamed crabs dipped in hot salty butter. Yummy. The flavor and texture of the crab is of high quality with plentiful meat and it gives a higher meat yield than blue crabs.

Hi Prof! I love seafood most specially crabs and shrimps. In our province here in Pampanga, they always have fresh shrimps and crabs. My Aunt will just steam them and it's all good. Very fresh, sweet tasting, and super yummy. Lol. After a meal you can my other plate so full of empty shells which means I'm so full.

Hi professor, good evening. I am from Goa and you must be knowing our staple food is fish curry and rice. An average Goan, particularly Hindus, will find it difficult to eat their meals when they are forced to take veg.food on particular days. I said 'particularly Hindus' only because Christians or Muslims do not observe any veg. days. Fish will always be associated with some smell even if the fish is fresh we call as fish odour. If the fish is spoiled it will give a foul smell. The fish eaters who are familiar will know the difference immediately. As far as prawns are concerned, they are always different. A vegetarian shifting to non veg. will always start with prawns or pomfret both are similar in nature odour free and good to taste.

I live in a country that has really great seafood. I eat fish all the time and I can get it fresh everyday. I feel bad that you don't get that, especially since you seem to enjoy eating it. I think maybe the salty fish (with the distinct smell) you're talking about is a sort of dried or smoked fish. It's just a guess. I enjoy dried and smoked fish! My favorite seafoods are oyster, shrimp, and smoked salmon. I love baked oyster with butter and cheese. I love shrimp with this butter/spicy sauce. And I love smoked salmon with anything.

I live in Iowa so naturally any seafood I can find is shipped in from somewhere else. We usally stick to tuna, frozen cod or salmon when we eat at home. I buy salmon burgers that are delicious grilled or sometimes make salmon cakes from canned salmon. My favorite way to enjoy seafood is eating out at a the Red Lobster restaurant. I love the fact that you can get shrimp prepared in a wide variety of ways. I like lobster but don't think it is worth the price we have to pay. Many of my friends love to eat crab legs, but I think those are a lot of work for a small amount of food. I prefer to buy mock crab(crab flavored whitefish) at the grocery store and prepare it at home. We also eat catfish, trout and crappie or blue gills that we catch locally in our lakes and rivers.

Without refrigerated transport it is easy to see how you are not accustomed to fresh sea food. It was nice you got to visit and enjoy really fresh foods from the sea. It is not unusual for seafood to taste more salty, as the sea or ocean is salt water, and lakes and rivers have less salt, because it is fresh water. Because we can get frozen sea food we can enjoy it more often.

I am a strict vegetarian. However I feel just like how the same vegetables taste different in different regions, in the same way, fish also must be tasting as per the water from which they have been taken. I notice this from the brinjal, drumstick etc. which I eat in Chennai and the same vegetables taste little different in Bangalore. Even the greens are very tasty in Chennai whereas here in Bangalore I feel the taste is less. This must be due to the soil, weather and water.

dear professor, fish and other sea food are abundant here in our place. there are restaurants that cater to the clients, the latter chooses the fish alive from aquariums and then weighed and cooked hence you will know it is really fresh. i love prawns most of all. i love to eat "tahong" (a kind of mussels) being cultured and harvested in the Philippines. but there are seasons when it is not advised to eat because of red tide (an algal bloom) which could be fatal to the consumer. so i stick to prawns. and when there are crabs, i love them cooked in coconut milk, or simply just being steamed. hmmm, your discussion made me hungry. have a nice day. ann
