Does religion help us to get closer with God or just make us more reject Him?

Some people say religion is the way to get to Heaven. Some say you can know God through religion. But do you agree that the author of religion is the devil himself? Religion is used sometimes to mislead people to believe something against the Bible or against God. now there are so many religions that instead of helping us learn more about the Creator so we should serve and worship Him, they only cause us to be deceived.

To start with, we must consider that 'religion' is a very broad term. For me, the answer to most of your quetions is that it depends on what religion you are talking about. Then towards the end, I think you are starting to clarify what you beleive. Maybe others understood your question. My religion is Christianity, staying as close to the Holy Bible teaching as I can. Even for Christians, religiosity can be an enemy. Have a great day.

Nice try to take a swipe at me, but you missed. First of all let me say that if you live by the specifics mentioned, that is fine and I will not fault you for it. The issues you raise are specifics that arise for today's Chirsitan due to the relationship between the Old and New Testament. There are many aspects to the way Old and New are connected and many I may not understand or barely understand. Fortunately, my understanding does not determine truth. I will say though, as a foundation, that even though the Old Testament appears to be focused on the acts of God the Father, Jesus Christ is present throughout. He is in Creation, Jesus is pointed to in the Law, He is talked about and looked for in the Prophets (major and minor) and He is referred to in the Psalms, even the details of His crucifixion. Between the Old and New Testaments we find the cross of Jesus Christ. There is no historical event greater than this, so we know it is hugely important. In the New Testament, people are taught about Jesus Christ and are given the opportunity to be His disciples. Now, the Holy Spirit comes to inhabit the believer, whereas that was a rare and temporary event in the Old. Christians today must live according to the entire Bible, but the Old must be interpreted through the work of Jesus Christ. The Ten Commandments are not specifically repeated in the New, but they certainly remain applicable. You did not ask me why I do not sacrifice animals for atonement of sin. That is because Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice and it need not be repeated. The New Testament gives fairly clear evidence that Jesus' disciples (Jewish by nature) met and worshipped on the first day of the week, Sunday. The same with the ressurection. If you are Seventh Day Adventist and worship on Saturday, that is fine. The Kosher diet is part of the law. If you read through the Gospels of Jesus Christ you will see multiple examples when Jesus and the disciples were challenged for not following the law, and Jesus addresses it. Some do research the dietary laws and see that there are health benefits contained there. Must all witches die? Well, witches are sinners, and all men, women and children are sinners. The Bible is clear that all men must die, and after that face judgment. Judgment is only 'good news' for those who have found salvation in Jesus Christ. Usery - I borrow money and pay interest on that borrowed money. Going by memory, I think usery is when the lender charges excessive interest. I do not lend money, so I cannot be charging too much interest. Even though the Bible is written such that the simplest person can understand the most important truths in it, it takes much more study to understand other aspects. Hopefully my discussion is not confusing. Have a great day. djbtol

Does staying as close to the Holy Bible as you can include worshiping on Saturday, observing a Kosher diet, not allowing witches to live, not practicing usery? If not, why?

Well explained, djbtol. nice of you to share your beliefs, they only lacked scripture references though to complete it, but i like it. the Bible is really a great help so that we can know which is wrong and which is right, just like a map it serves as our guide in serving God. It's just that the devil knows when and how to attack us and distract us away from the truth. thanks!

For me one thing is certain God ceated human beings and He never created religions. He is above all religions and all religions belong to Him.He has no religion.Human beings created religions and thereby rift among us. We have to blame ourselves for our quarrels and not God.The religious fenatics are responsile for all our religious miseries. We are all chidren of one god only. Will parents relish quarrels among their children.Similarly god does not like our quarrels. In the name of religion we are all divided. That is why universal brotherhood and mutual religious respect is necessary amongst us.....

Didn't God give Moses most the religious teachings of the Israelites, including some very specific stuff about building the arc of the covenant, the tabernacle, priest's garments etc.. That sounds an a lot like God creating religion to me.

Any religion that tries to convince you of something other than what you find in God's word, the bible, is a false religion.

I hear what you are saying and for the most part I really do agree with you. I think sometimes we get stuck in our religion which builds up a barrier between us and God. It becomes an obstacle rather than something that helps us get closer to Him.

For myself I must always choose what will please my God first. That means it doesn't matter if people laugh or do not understand! That doesn't mean it may not hurt when they laugh or hate me, but it cannot carry more weight than God does in my life.

Well, if you a good or loyal to your God you will closer to the God.Loyal means like one of Mylot guidelines, Do's and Don't. If you feel that it make a barrier, means you have to thinking it why?? Breaking God rules?? Do the God wiss but it's hard for you.Cause you will be hate by others or laugh by them. Which one do you choose?? God, them or something??

I define "religion" as being your moral and paranormal beliefs. Thus you can't not have a religion. You can have a simple or vague one but it's still a religion. I think what you really mean is "organized religion", where there is leadership and meetings etc.. I don't agree that the "author of religion is the devil himself" - well not all religions. I believe God gave instructions for most of Judaism. However he only gave vague instructions for Christianity, because it was supposed to be Judaism 1.1. However Christians and Jews rebelled against each others' religions and both ended up with a mess. Over the past few centuries, Christians have been trying to rid themselves of the non-Biblical teachings of the churches (I don't know so much about what's been happening on the Jewish side). Now there's a messianic movement, similar to Judaism but accepting Yeshua (Jesus) as the messiah and incarnation of God. Yes there are (and have been) false teachers, false prophets, false messiahs; some of them are unfortunately extremely influential. You just have make sure you know your Bible and go to church or Messianic synagogue and prey for guidance. Nobody but Yeshua is perfect you may run into bad churches, bad synagogues, bad priests, bad people or have unfortunate experiences with generally good ones. All you have to do to get to heaven is accept Yeshua as your savior and make a serious effort to follow him.

thanks and i respect what you believe in. what counts is that we have a close personal relationship with God because relationship with Him is the most important and not religion, although religion should help mold us in our faith, sometimes it's the opposite.

There has never been anything like GOD or saviour. The final way out of mankind shoud be: self-conscience, self-management and self-surpass.

Religion often times was formed in the beginning to be good but all we really have to look is in history and we can clearly see that religion will not only pull you away from the creator of your choosing but will take away your freedom to think for yourself and that is the most important thing of all as if you believe in most stories of creation god or said creator of the universe gave free will so for religions to take that away is a direct violation of the creators will. Also religion is often used its power of control to get people to do things that would go against the true beliefs of the religion like for example kill people because of their beliefs in a different creator. Or to kill people for saying the religion is wrong about (Earth not being the center of the solar system let alone the universe.) The best way to practice a belief is to study it on your own you don't need nor did humanity ever need for another human to tell them what the words of the Bible or any other holy writing means the point of these books where for the individual to read them and to use logic and see what fits with them and to get them to make a step to improve yourself their is no need for a priest or any other religious leader to tell you or anyone else what the words mean or say as I am sure you have the ability to think for yourself and if you have questions you have the ability to ask the point is for you to read them and what ever Idea the book convinces you is the right path than it is the right path because you are right not the people trying to tell you what to think your right its that simple.

You're wrong, or at least overly simplistic in saying that killing people "because of their beliefs in a different creator" is contrary to the true beliefs of the religion. It depends on the religion. The Koran frequently exhorts people to kill others who don't accept the "true" teachings of Islam (including moderate Muslims who it calls "hypocrites"). I don't think you can deny that the Koran is the true teachings of Islam, if you disagree with it you're not a Muslim, or at least a rather heretical one. I don't entirely agree with not needing priests etc. to tell you what scripture means. If you're too insular, you tend to go very "off the rails" because there's nobody to tell you that you're making mistakes and building on them to end up with something that seriously out to lunch. Also, unless you have a very good knowledge of the language(s) your scripture was originally written in and the culture of the time and place when and where it was written, you can seriously misinterpret things. Some English translations of the Bible (not sure about other scriptures but I'd be very surprised if you don't have similar problems with other languages and other scriptures) contain some rather questionable things which can throw the poorly educated. The priests etc. aren't always right either but they should be able to help.

Religion gets blamed for a lot, but it's not "religion" as such that's the bad guy, it's the corruption of a particular belief that's the bad guy. Take Christianity, for example. If the Christian lived totally as Jesus Christ taught, do you think anyone would find fault with the Christian religion? The problem is that too many Christians by their behavior give Christianity a bad name. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with the Christian religion, just some Christians. I imagine some Muslims would say the same thing about the Islamic religion.

Why you have asking about that?? Of course it was, and every religions will considered other religion was an evil creations. For you, your religion was the best and for me my religion was the best ever. That why my prophet teach "Your religion was your's while my religion was mine." Cheers.

Religion itself is not the way to get to heaven. You get to heaven by confessing Christ as your personal savior and developing that relationship with him personally. You are responsible for yourself, you cannot get to heaven on the works or deeds of others. The church is a mandate in the bible that we are to assemble ourselves for the edification of the brethren. If we are where God has led us to be, the church will only help lift you up. The bible warned against false teachers, prophets, and churches. Basically if they are teaching anything that cannot be defined in the bible they are teaching a false doctrine. My fav being the catholic church. No where does it say you have to receive absolution from a priest, or that priests cannot be married in the bible. But the confessional booth and supposed abstinence of the clergy are mainstays of the doctrine by which they live. I do believe that Satan has gotten into some churches and twisted and perverted them to deceive us - he had gotten into the garden of Eden for this purpose too. But I do not think this should dissuade us from going where God wants us to be. You just have to be strong in what you through prayer and study know to be true.

I guess i have to agree because i can see you are a Bible reader. We should really check it first before believing someone who talks about faith or about God and that if what he is saying is true. Most of all we should pray and study the Bible like you said. thanks!

Religion show us the way to go to the god. It helps us to understand the god. It teaches us about the god's love. Religion discipline us to lead a correct life. Some people are so frustrated because of the bitter experiences. That is why they denied god and religion. If love is poured on them by their friends, relatives and neighbur they will not say like this.

I guess it will get someone closer to him but I wouldn't really know since I don't follow the practices of my own religion. All I do is believe in him and acknowledge his existance by praying.

Of course religion will help you to get closer with God. Cause I believe that the members of the church will help you to be a perfect saint, you just have to looked it in positive ways..

Is there such a thing as "a perfect saint"? Nobody's perfect except Yeshua (Jesus) so even the real saints must have had their bad days. As for the members of the church - I think it depends what church you go to.

Religion has caused more wars, and murdered more people than any other single cause. Nowhere in the Bible does God tell his children to get Religion. Even Jesus never spoke of religion. Religion was a man-made scheme to make Money, and it has been successful beyond anyone's imagination. The Pope is the richest man that has ever lived, and no one including the Pope himself has any idea how much money Religion has generated over the last 2000 years.

The devil doesn't really exist. Mankind is a controlling lot. They all want to shape the world to their view. That is why truth should always be questioned even long held beliefs. The truth is out there to be found but so often it is being hidden and manipulated by mankind. Questions never bother real truth.

IN my own reasoning, religion will really help us to get closer to God. Man has to honor God as creations will give honor to its creator - this is how the religion works. Religion is a portal of morals and teachings that helps us to know, love and serve serve our creator. We are HIS creations and HE is our creator. And it is rightful to give honor to our creator.

I don't know exactly. I am a non-practicing Catholic. All I know and what I am so certain of is that no religion could ever save us. It's our fate which will lead us to the right path.

I think it depends on the purpose. Religion literally means "return to bondage". For me, church is wonderful. I love going to church and learning about God and attending different Bible studies and worship times. However, I would never want to be caught up in the politics of church. Some people don't go to church and prefer to do their alone time with God at home. It depends on the person :)
