I think more than Happy Endings , tragic endings earned much in the Movies . For example Titanic , Van Helsing etc , The movies that has Tragic ends will keep on existing in our Hearts and Minds for very long time . But some tragic movies will make us to run away from the Theaters .Even there are some movies that has Got a Big hit by its Happy endings but still Tragic movie were the Top scorers in the Earning and been in the Theaters for long time .

Tragic movie endings seem to burn into our memories faster than happy endings. We all like to see a happy ending in the movies we enjoy. Sometimes the more tragic ones stay with us. It isn't the way we choose. it is just how the movie affects us.

Well! 'Suga raagam sogamdhaane'![I presume you know Tamil and this is a song from 'Mudhal Mariyadhai'. ].I think it would be the way the film is taken that earns mass appeal.I personally prefer some happy endings.Even in literature, the best poetry and verse springs out of sadness. Shakespeare's tragedies are supposed to be the 'Great 'tragedies. Nevertheless, I doubt if the sad ones would be gross earners.THen how do we account for Rajini's films or old comedy classics or musical hits?

i agree with you that tragic-ending movies earned much more in theaters than happy ending ones. i guess, people flock to movies where the ending is unusual and more reality-like. This is because as we know, real-life stories oftentimes do not end happily, thus people can much more relate to tragic-ending movies. for myself, i don't really care much about the endings of movies. I am much more concern on how the way the story develops, the way it was presented and the impact of the whole movie on me. although i admit that i'm a sucker for happy endings. it uplifts my mood much more than tragic ending movies.

I don't agree with you .Maybe tragic movies can get the best of comedic movies in movie festivals .It is hard to say which style can get more boxoffice .As far as i know ,classic comedic movies did a good job on the aspect .To my mind ,i prefer comedies .Life is harsh enough for me to suffer .So i often pick classic comedies to relieve for a while .

I think tragic endings are more memorable especially ones that catch you by surprise. I also enjoy movies with both tragic and happy endings, although in Titanic, it had a tragic ending, it was also a happy one because Rose lived long enough to share her story and to relive her love that she had on that boat.

Well I personally prefer to see movies that have the gratifying ending, where love rules and people get together finally after two hours of being apart. LOL. I just don't like to be sad when I finish a movie, I mean don't get me wrong Titanic is one of my favorite movies of all time, and tragic endings do make movies memorable, but I still much prefer to live a life thinking that those great finales could actually happen in real life. But thats just my opinion.

I hate tragic endings.... but I hate open endings even more. I like my endings happy, resolved, and pretty much wrapped up. I like some bittersweet endings where not everything went well but some things did. But all-out sad endings? No. Can't stand them. I like stories that make me feel happy or uplifted, and when they're not then I just feel bitter. Like I said, I hate open endings even more. Open endings are the kind that resolve absolutely nothing and kind of expect you to think of an ending for yourself.

You are right that we tend to have the endings of movies with tragic endings in our minds for quite some time. However, I can't watch movies with this kind of ending all the time because they have a tendency to depress me. That is the reason that I also watch a lot of romance and comedy movies because I walk away from those feeling a lot better than I do from some of the movies that I've seen that make me depressed.
