My friend and her daughter both celebrate their birthday's on Halloween - my friend will be 40 and her daughter 21. They are having a big joint Halloween themed party and my daughter has made them this lovely cake for it. Halloween has become really big now in Britain, we seem to have followed the US with making Halloween a really big thing - do you celebrate it or do you dread it?

Congratulations to yours on their birthdays. I'm not much of a Halloween fan myself, But I spent 10 years in supermarkets, so any sort of festival carries the chore of a lot of additional work: if that makes sense. Stocking up for Christmas from September was a real nightmare as a warehouse manager: endlessly rotating stock due to expiry dates (and a manager that was paranoid about holding as much stock as he could) dampened my spirits somewhat!

I can imagine the nightmare it must be in retail these days stuff seems to be in the shops ridiculously early for every festival or holiday - can guarantee that there will be Easter Eggs in the shops straight after Christmas!!

You can imagine the home scenario, if working in that environment, when the first Christmas/ Valentines/ Easter adverts come on. Everyone else starts looking forward to celebrations when you are dreading them!

Next to Christmas, it's my favorite time of the year. Guess I'm really a witch at heart. I love to watch all the kiddies in their costumes running around, and I like to decorate for the season. Seeing all the JOL's cut up and burning bright is fun to look at too on Halloween night. I like to ride down the street at night and see all the scary yard decorations lit up. I'll be going over my daughters house to see my granddaughter, Lucy, all dressed up. She's only 3 and will only go to a few houses, but she has a great time. Then we'll come home and Lucy loves to hand out the treats to the kids that come to the door. Everyone brings something and we end up having a good pot of chili, cornbread, salad, and dessert. I guess it's just what you make of it.

I'm so sorry, I forgot to mention how beautiful your daughters cake is! Wow, she can do that for a living and make good money at it,...or does she? Well, if she doesn't, she should as it is just fantastic!

She does it as a hobby/money making venture; she has four young daughters between 2 qnd 14 ans so likes to fit the cake making in around them. She has her own website, she does make a little for making the cakes but if she charged by the hour for the work that she puts in they would be just TOO expensive for people to buy!!

My daughter's boyfriend's birthday is Halloween as well. I love Halloween. It is so much fun especially for the kids since they get to dress up and Trick or Treat. I love going out Trick or Treating with the kids as well. It is fun to see all the neighbors and I get to have a nice walk and get some exercise. I also volunteered at my youngests school for their Halloween party. The party was a great success and the kids were adorable.

Halloween used to be my second favorite holiday, Christmas having the number one spot. It probably has a lot to do with decorating. I love to decorate. Of course, Halloween decorating meant figuring out new and unique ways to scare the bejesus out of the trick-or-treaters and I was always pretty good at it. Sadly, where we live now is so far off the beaten path that we don't get one single trick-or-treater. Not one. I had a pumpkin carving party with my sons the first year we lived here and that was a blast but we didn't have anyone come by to enjoy the jack-o-lanterns so it was really wasted energy and money. I used to make my own costumes and made every one of my sons' costumes when they were growing up. They'd tell me what they wanted to be and I'd do my best to make sure they became that for Halloween. They won a bunch of contests, too! Now that I'm remembering back, I won a costume contest once at work. The prize was a $25.00 gift certificate for a restaurant so that was pretty cool. I loved decorating and making costumes. I miss it. Hopefully, before I'm too old, I'll have some grandchildren whom I can make costumes for. I'd love that. Oh, one redeeming thing about Halloween living where I live now is all the candy on sale and whatever I buy is strictly MINE!!!

I have to admit now that my son is older nothing happens actually around where I live for Halloween. Some years I have hd parties for my grandkids but as I only returned home yesterday from my holidays I haven't done a thing this year!

Usually we do celebrate it in full force, but for some reason this year we didn't. I haven't been feeling very well, so we barely decorated. My husband took my daugther around trick and treating yesterday (yeah, I said yesterday...they are strange down here). Anyways, I went to my parents house to pass out candy there so they wouldn't have to be jumping up and down every few minutes. I enjoy seeing the little kids in costumes. They are celebrating Halloween tonight in my area so I will be passing out candy here tonight.

I still celebrate Halloween. I make it a big deal at work and have vendors come in with food and prizes for our costume contest. This year I bought them 4 bags of candy too. At home, my kids are getting older so they go out around 4 with their friends. I love to see the kids in costumes so I make sure that I decorate my front porch and have lots of candy to give out. My neighbor's birthday is on Halloween too! I think it makes your birthday easy to remember. Though I bet you get alot of orange and black birthday cakes! My birthday is right before Xmas and that is pretty bad. I always used to get the 1 card and 1 gift - Happy Xmas Birthday type thing. Those closest to me know I like to keep them separate though.

I sympathise with the Christmas birthday - mine is bad enough and that is the 20th December!!
