Is abortion okay when you are raped?

I just read this article about a nine year old girl in Brazil getting pregnant with twins by her step father. In Brazil abortion is very illegal. The mother, doctor and medical team were excommunicated by the Vatican for following through with an abortion. But the father who raped her was not. This is insane. This to me is what gives religion a bad name. They said that taking the life of the unborn child was worse then the act of rape. But carrying twins could of very well of killed this young girl and then the father would of taken a life technically. What do you think, is abortion okay in a situation like this?

it's horriable. How could this little girl go on her life with the twins? an unborned life is ever more important than the actual life? I really can not understand it .I have to say in some country the law is so ridiculous. Why man can not learn to respect woman, in some country, woman's postition is so low, just like this .

While I am very against abortion on demand, there are very legitimate arguments on both sides for allowing it in the cases of rape. This case sounds like a very good reason to consider it.

I agree. It wasn't her choice and being this young could really scar her in many ways.

And any situation where this girl is treated as a criminal, but the rapist father is not is just sick.

That is one reason i dont believe in any religion. Never in this life is abortion worse then rape. I mean the girl suffer's and stills needs to have the pain of carrying the baby. And she is nine, her babies would be as healthy as tehy could be if she was much older. They are trying to take children's childhood.

OH, God, this is heartbreaking news....I have a daughter who is only 11 and imagining her pregnant (as in that girl's shoes) is a devastating sight for me... I am a \Christian and I don't believe in abortion. Being raped is a mistake no one wants, worse getting pregnant because of it.... But, getting an abortion is only compounding one mistake with another. The girl's body is just so young and fragile.carrying twins might post a danger to her but getting an abortion will also put her life at risk... So, i'd rather see my grandchildren than take this matters in my own hand. With proper care and help from professionals, the girl has more chances of getting through this thing successfully. Having been raped had probably traumatized the girl, getting an abortion will surely make it worse for her... Mat God watch over this child....

For me personally, abortion is never okay. However, that doesn't mean that I would go so far as to give someone else a hard time if they were to have an abortion. I am a pro-choice type of person, but for myself I am pro-life. I think, however, that really the only cases that abortion should be acceptable is in the case of rape or in the cases where carrying a child to term is going to be detrimental to the life of the mother.

I think the law on abortion should be qualified. Yes, the unborn child has nothing to do with it and yes that unborn child is innocent. However, in that case where the victim who got pregnant is only 9 years of age, her pregnancy can surely put her life at risk and she's carrying a twins at that! Abortion in my country is allowed when there is an imminent danger in the life of the mother. And I think a child bearing children at a very tender age is in imminent danger.

I know that life is full of contradictions, that there is often a gulf between what we want and what's good for us, what should be done and what can be done. But that doesn't stop me from occasionally saying 'huh?' It sounded like a sensible enough idea except that the most sensible ideas usually stand up to scrutiny. And somehow this one didn't.

I found out that in my home country 98% of abortions were for social or economic reasons. Only 2% of abortions were because the mother's life was in danger, the baby was thought to be severely disabled or the lady conceive the baby in an attack. So I think that the reason the mother's life is in danger is why she should be able to have an abortion. I think that the 9 year old girl was in danger being pregnant with twins. She conceived during an attack by her step father. I think her life was in danger and she was pregnant through abuse. I think even though abortion is illegal in Brazil the abortion had been the right thing to do. The step father should have been the one excommunicated from the Catholic church. I think abortion is wrong in 98% of cases and just 2% are just because of the circumstances.

in my point of view..YES would be my answer YES doesn't mean..yes to kill In this world there would be dark and light, black and white..so do grey aborting this baby doesn't mean killing it..or raising this baby, u know you get killed.. life is full of options.. sin doesn't counter with the act but the purpose of doing so

I heard that when you're raped, you should so some intense exercises in the gym and then most importantly wash up that area. I don't think it's good to just abort the baby because afterall, it's a new life. If you don't want to bring up the child, maybe you can consider giving it up for adoption to a better family.

Well, I think to be excommunicated is a great thing, as christian religion has only done bad things through the years, and as you said, they didn't seem to think the f*cker who raped that poor girl did anything wrong, as when religion justifies it, any crime seems to be ok. I think that of course abortion is OK. That kid would never be loved as the mother would remind the rapist every time she looked at the kid's face, and that would be sad for that kid.

In the simplest answer to the question, "Is abortion okay in a situation like this?" Yes. It is. I do not believe that someone who has had their free will taken away from them in such a manner should ever have to go through something as traumatizing as a FORCED pregnancy and birth. This poor girl has gone through enough but then to expect her have the child of this man is insane. What if something goes wrong and she has to have a c-section, she should have to carry physical scars of the rape as well as the emotional ones? I don't think that is fair to her. As for the idea that abortion is worse than rape? No, it isn't because abortions should have "exceptions" like rape, incest, endangering the mother or child's life, and defects. I believe abortion in the case of alternative birth control is very wrong, but it isn't my choice to make and I can't force by beliefs on anyone else.

I personally agree with abortion overall, I think it okay for anyone, for any reason. However I absolutely think that putting a CHILD at risk like that is the utmost of appalling. Even grown women who get raped should have the right, but in cases where the female is actually likely to DIE is completely absurd.
