My Goal was to Read the Whole Bible!! - I Did It!!

Some of us decided to read the Bible until December 31. I started in July and read the last chapter on December 27.. Or actually listened to most of it, as I had to save my eyes. The readers were really good, so the scriptures became more alive. The truth in the Proverbs chapter 3 are even more clear now: 5 "Trust unto Jehovah with all thy heart, And unto thine own understanding lean not. 6 In all thy ways know thou Him, And He doth make straight thy paths." I am going to start again on January 1st and take more time to meditate and do research on the Holy Scriptures. Whether you believe that the Bible is God´s word or not, it can be an interesting experience to read through it, as it has huge influence in so many lives now and has had that also in the past. Will you join me?

I have read it through and I used to start every January 1. Right now I started in November to read it through alphabetically. It's been very interesting and breaks it up a little bit!

Thank you so much!! I have listened to different books too, not in order, so I finished with Malachi a few hours ago. I had some tapes with the Greek Scriptures, so I listened to them some time ago, and sometimes - following a school program, I read or listened to 1&2 Kings and 1&2 Chronicles. It can be good to have some variation..

I have read parts of the Bible although I´m an agnostic. Some parts of it are full of meaning whatever your creed. But I would not go into that part where a phophet begot the next one and so on. Generalogy does not interest me. But the book of Ruth, for instance, is awesome. There are other parts I love, but don´t know the name in English.

I love the story of Ruth - But I also like Esther -- it's a great one too, have you read that part?

Yes, I have also read the story of Esther. And it is awesome that in a world that was very male chauvinist, there were so many men.

Way to go! I also finished a few days ago and now just reading some of my favorite chapters as I wait for January. Today I read Jesus' intimate prayer in John chapter 17. I like verse 22 where Jesus mentions that his disciples would work in unity.

Yes, it is kind of miracle that people with so different backgrounds and personalities can be united and learn to love each other - I never forget when we met our friends from Russia the first time after they were allowed to talk about their faith openly and come together to conventions. The happiness and love they showed was not of this world, yes, it was from above!!

What a wonderful chapter that is, I had to read it again, and this time it touched my heart so deeply. A bit hard to read with all the tears flowing.. I wonder how much we still have to learn before reaching that deep love to our brothers and sisters?? I am sure it happens in the future paradise.. Or maybe even before?? Looking forward to learn more of the power in the Holy Scriptures.. Thank you for your encouraging words..

As you know, that kind of unity was manifested by the first-century Christians. So, it has to be displayed by present day Christians. It's that unity and love that will keep us together as we face the great tribulation and survive.

Congrats! What translation(s) did you use? I have found the New King James to be very good. I have read the Holy Bible through a number of times. One time I actually used the Amplified Version! (a little longer than you can imagine). Years back in order to get my first license to preach via the Penn-Del (at that time Eastern) District of the Assemblies of God I had to read it through sequentially in the KJV. God bless! Btw, the onlinebible.net or onlinebible.org has a great engine for personal Bible research to download.

Ok, I have read a comment before by someone who didn´t agree with NIV. Well, have to do more research. We are always learning.. It was interesting to read your thoughts. I can not understand Greek but there are others who can of course..I left a comment after your article as I am in Triond too.. Yes, the languages change, so that is why we sometimes need to renew the translations from the original languages in the Bible. Thank you for your comments..

Hi, PastorP Thank you for mentioning New King James and the Amplified Version, I will have to use them for research. The first time I read the whole Bible was many years ago and that time I used the 1917 Swedish translation. When I quote the Bible, I often use a version from the Biblegateway, forgot to give the info when starting the discussion, the verse above was from Young´s Literal Translation. This year I have listened to the Finnish version of New World Translation that I loaded from jw.org. It is very interesting to compare different translations, one that I detected lately was the New International Readers´s version. Have to check the sites you mentioned too. Thanks for the info..

Aye! Young's Literal Translation--I think it's great. Careful with the NIV though. It might be great in the OT but, sad to say I found botches up often in the NT (Greek). I had used it for years until I compared its NT with the actual Greek. More info can be found on that at... http://relijournal.com/christianity/why-i-gave-up-on-the-new-international-version/ .

Hi, Kalyni Looks like you read a lot! The only hindu book I have heard of is the last one you mentioned. Yes, the Bible is actually like a library with 66 books, but it is written a bit like a detective novel, the problem that occurs in Eden with the first two people and a solution that God has in his mind is already mentioned in Genesis 3:15 Then we can get get more and more information while we read further about what the final solution will be. In Daniel 2:44 is a description of what will happen when we come to our days. A New World Government will take over and solve the problems of mankind. Revelation describes how it all will happen and how the world will be in the beginning when God´s Kingdom will rule and the paradise will be restored. Those who believe in the Bible and follow it, are looking forward to a wonderful future for all mankind.. If you want to read the Bible or study what it has to give you, why not go to watchtower.org or jw.org - you will probably find something in you own language. Have a great day!!

I am Christian but have never read the bible. I like the fact that you wanted to finish within a certain time period. That's sure to motivate you. I want to join but I have so much on my plate right now. But I will do it later this year! Thank you for the idea. :D

Oh that's so great. Congatulations for that. I've been wanting also to read the Bible from cover to cover, but I find it hard to do. Yes definitely I will join you and listen to it from the Biblegateway. They have a very good reader, Max Mclean. I've also read that the Bible is meant to be heard, so I'll follow you on this and start this coming 2011. Thank you for sharing this, it really inspired me to seek God's word all the more. God Bless you.

Yes, Neriz for many of us listening is easier. It is still possible to have a written Bible near you and mark with a pencil some verses that you want to remember. Also a note book may be helpful. In many places in the Bible we see how the scriptures were read aloud and people were listening. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. Revelation 1:3 (King James Version)

That sounds great, carolscash I hope you will have a great time to read it with your daughter. If you want to make it easier, you can do what I did. Listen to the someone reading it. I listened to the recordings we find at jw.org and that made it much easier. You will find recordings of literature for children and teenagers and of course adults too, on that site. Happy reading to you both..

I've probably read the whole Bible over the years just not from start to finish at one time. Our church class gives us a schedule @ each year's beginning and then we have class discussions on the major topics in each Sunday's class. So we'll be starting all over again tomorrow and go from there. There is still much to be learned with each new reading. I do have 'helpers' when I read as I use a commentary, Josephus, concordance and a Bible dictionary.

Hi, yoyo1198 I think we find new treasures every time we read the Bible and it can be good to use accurate information and get some background to what happened in the the time it was written. I often use the search box on http://www.watchtower.org/ You can find many articles on different subjects, and then you can compare the information with your own Bible. I wish you happy reading..

Hi, agnescmary - sounds great.. I am also been reading about Noah and his family. You have really been busy reading and you are right, every time we detect something new that we have not thought about before. After all, there are 66 books in the Bible, so we need to be reminded all the time. I will also listen to some literature from jw.org, as it helps me to understand and get the whole picture clearer. Wish you happy reading

I wanted to do that too- but i always forget.. The Bible is the greatest love story of all time and it would be nice to read it.. I only read the first books, wisdom, psalms, proverbs, revelation and some of the gospels. I do enjoy reading the bible because there are lots of stories in it, but there are some stories I don't want to read...

Hi, lady1993 Some parts of the Bible are not so easy to understand, but the more we read, the more familiar we get with the scriptures. It is also important to pray for wisdom, as God can send you someone who can help you to understand more. I can recommend the literature at jw.org - you can download the Bible there and get some good books for studying and understanding it better. You can compare what you learn with your own Bible, and there are lots of languages to choose from. Wish you happy reading

Hi, lingaypaculdar The best thing, if we can do so, is to do it when we are wide awake, for some it may be in the morning, but as I am more awake later, I often read rather late - or in my case listen.. I guess we have to decide a time when we can concentrate best and that may depend on our personality or maybe our genes... The most important thing is to make it a habit so that we do every day. Wish you happy reading..

What the mind conceives, your body can achieve. Praise God for you and may He bless you more. I never had a chance to read the whole Bible, but I know the summary and highlights of the whole content. I love, believe, apply, share, and fight for whatever's in it. I will still aim to read the whole Bible one of these days. Happy MyLotting!

Hi, juniorstringbean, thank you for your encouraging comments.. It is great that you believe in the Bible and love it and even share it with others.. There are some parts in the Bible that are difficult to understand, but we can always pray for wisdom and if we keep an open mind, God can send someone to help us to understand. Welcome to join us, so that we can share what we have found in the Holy Scriptures! Happy reading..

Hi, jessiicali Welcome to myLot! We are still in January so you will have plenty of time to read the whole Bible until the end of the year. For me it is easier to listen, so I download the read version on jw.org and now it has become a habit to start the day by listening to a few chapters. It gives a wider and more balanced view of life and gives a chance to learn to know our loving Creator. Wish you happy reading, and why not ask questions that come up while we continue talking about what we have found in the Holy Scriptures!!

Hi Buenavida, When I was a teen I remember thinking I was going to read the bible cover to cover. I started to and read a little each night for quite a while. Don't remember how far I got but have to admit that I've never read the entire book...only parts. I might try again. I'm not sure if I could get into it but I might give it a try. We'll see.

If every week you read one portion, it's great. Once you finish, you need to start again from the beginning, You'll see how new meanings that you did not understand for the first time, come to surface. On the third time even more, and so on, every time you read. It's fascinating.

Yes, ladynetz We always find something we haven´t seen before, maybe a scripture that helps us in the situation we are in at the moment. There is so much wisdom there, so even after reading the Bible for 50 years, I find something I didn´t notice earlier. It is really fascinating!!

hey congratulations! I read the whole bible once but now i only believe in Jesus Christ, other parts like histories and stuff i think benefits too much a certain group, so i just believe in His words, like forgiving, loving, that's the important. my eyes was so tired when i finished!

Hi, katie0 Jesus is a great teacher, and we need to learn from him all the time. The interesting thing is that already from Genesis 3:15, we get clues about the one whom God would send to the world, which was Jesus. There are over 300 prophecies in the "Old Testament" that talk about him. Jesus also quoted from the old scriptures, which were what the people of his days read. So we can also benefit from reading them. Yes, the eyes can be very tired from reading, so I can recommend you to listen instead. I use the site jw.org where we can download the Bible books we want and other literature too. Happy listening..

Yes that is the good goal and I pray that God spirit will be with you always when you reading it. Pray that God gives you understanding whatever you read and make an action whatever you learn from it... keep it up and enjoy... like what 2 Tim 3:16-17 about the word of God... see you around

Yes, visavis, it is important to pray for wisdom and understanding, and also follow tha guidance God gives us in His Word. I read the scripture you mention in the New International Reader´s version, an interesting translation: "16 God has breathed life into all of Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right. 17 By using Scripture, a man of God can be completely prepared to do every good thing." Have a great day..

Hi,maris5 You can start reading from Matthew and continue from there a little every day. Many chapters take only a few minutes to read, and when we have established the habit to do it every day, we will finish it sooner than we think. I listen to the Bible, as reading can be a bit difficult for the eyes, so I just went to jw.org and found the whole book there and other literature too. Maybe you can do the same as I did, then you can listen to the text read by good readers while you do other things. Happy reading and/or listening
