My doggy is afraid of the noise the firecrackers bring!

My doggy is petrified. The neighbors had started the New Year's revelry with deafening firecrackers. And my doggy is curled under my feet, confused about the non-stop noise. And my daughter just decided to put a band round my doggy's ears. Sigh! And there's seven hours more till the sound of Judas' Belt and Good-bye Earth. How scary the names are...

It's normal for dogs to get scared with a very loud noise and it's actually harmful to their heath since they get stressed out from this defeaning noise and they get panic attack too. It is recommended by one dog expert that we should stay by our dog's side at this time and put them in our lap to comfort them while the noise is going on. IN this case the dog will feel secure and comfortable.

I'd like to see that so called "dog expert" who recommended to confort your dog by holding him in your lap while the noise is going on. It is a bad advice. If you pet your dog when he's afraid, he will think that being afraid is good and you reward him for being afraid. In dog's world there is no such thing as peting for comfort. But you can confort your dog while the noise is going on by providing him a safe, quiet place to hide. Hiding is a normal behavior for a frightened dog.

inu1711, the dogs come to the alpha dog for reassurance and comfort. Stroking them and talking softly to them gives them that reassurance if you are lucky. While ever the explosions are occurring the dogs are terrified.

I get so angry when fireworks go off because they are illegal. My older dog is petrified and wants to stay really close. My pup was fine but when she saw Lucy reacting she also became frightened. My goats get scared too and try to hide but the noise and vibration in the air still reach them.

My dogs also freak out whenever there are fireworks anywhere around us as well. I think it is because of the fact that animals are more in touch with their sense of hearing than we are. Kind of on a funny related sidenote, there were a lot of fireworks in our area as well as the new year came into being and my daughter went outside and heard them. She swore up and down that she could hear the fireworks all the way from New York City (we are in Kentucky) and I thought that was hilarious.

I think dogs are scared of loud noises a lot of the time. My dog before she had to be put to sleep a couple of years ago was petrified of fireworks. She was running around, trying to figure out the source of the noise, diving underneath my computer desk and everywhere. I think that they get confused because it is something that they do not understand.

my dog also got a little scared of the noise last night so i have him cuddled while the neighbors are getting high on the fireworks. we just stayed inside instead of going outside the house so the noise has been minimized for him.

This is quite a natural reaction for dogs and in fact most animals to be scared by the loud bangs and bright lights of fireworks. They used to publicize quite extensively about making sure that your pets are locked up inside on all nights when fireworks were going to be used. I hope that your dog came through it OK. The main thing is that he had you there with him. _Derek

What the other mylotters are saying is correct, dogs have better hearing and the loud sound of fireworks does frighten some dogs. Here is a suggestion that may work for you that I do with my puppies. Do you have soothing music or classical music CD? Play this during the fireworks and though it still may bother your dog, he may be not so frightened...

I have cat and he dosent like sudden loud noses either but he's especially afraid of vacuum cleaners hair dryers, basically anything that makes a really loud noise, I think most cats and dogs are afraid of certain noises, partly because there hearing is much stronger then a humans hears, and also animals dont understand that not all loud noises can hurt them. for that matter I dont like sudden loud noises either but I can tolerate it better then my cat because I understand where and why there is noise, well anyway I'm sorry your dog is afraid I hope the noise stops soon.

I feel sorry for both you and your dog. I know how sad it is to see your dog petrified because of the New Year's noises. My previous dog, Nera, was like this and we couldn't enjoy our New Year celebrations for the last 13 years. My reply must be late, but I think it may help you for the next years. I don't think glueing a band around his ears will help him, on the contrary. This will only add another stress to his misery. It would be better if you found some place in the house where he can hide. This is a normal behavior for a dog who's afraid: hiding. Maybe you can provide him a place to hide, like a dark closet or a small bathroom. Put his bed in there and put some music to cover the loud noises. Don't force him to quit his hidding place until the noise is over and he voluntarely exits his den.

Most animals are scared by loud noises, and they have good reason to be, when there are those around who would use fireworks to torture them too. Their best place is at home, where they are welcomed and cared for.

Mighty and brave as dogs might seemed, they are actually quite timid in their hearts especially when they are alone, or not protecting their owners. DOgs are vulnerable, just like humans. Their character does not really reflect on how they look, and that's what i find cute about them. My dog is afraid of thunder, and whenever there's thunder, he will hide under the bed.

Someone should invent ear plugs or something for dogs to protect them from the Philippine New Year celebration.

Hi, Eileen. IT isn't just your dog, almost all of the animals are scared of the deafening noise. They might be thinking what on earth is happening. According to vets, the effects of these noises are far more damaging to animals, any kind, than it is to human beings.Poor creatures, how much more when everybody is already making tremendous noises later at 12... By the way, happy new year to you and your family.:)

hi friend, I agree with the other post that it's not just dogs that experience this, was thinking of all the animals that have hearing many times more sensitive than ours when it is already deafening to human ears. What I do is move all the pets at the back of our house because there's a fire wall there that defects sound so I was thinking it would be less harmful to them if I put them there until the revelry has past , or maybe I will return them tomorrow morning because I will be too tired and drunk from the celebration later, Happy New Year to all
