I honor her explanation

Right now I am connected to internet using land line phone through BSNL Broadband in my son’s home. When in my home too I use my landline phone for this. But on Sundays the speed is so slow. It is very difficult to connect to internet. It shows now, Speed 56.0 Mbps, Signal strength- Excellent. Sometimes it shows Speed 54.0 Mbps, Signal strength- Good. If I open several windows in mylot, they fail to open. My 12 year young granddaughter was sitting near me an hour ago to chat with my daughter in our home, but Yahoo messenger failed to open. She reads in class 6th, is definitely computer literate; her explanation about slow speed is wonderful, I honor it. She said there is a server, which is like a big water tank, we consumers are like water taps, during Sundays, holidays, many open the taps, so the water gets divided and speed is less, beautiful analogy, is not it? So how you access internet? What is the speed? Did any face this kind of problem on Sundays and holidays? When speed is less can you use your Yahoo messenger? Please share your opinion and comment on the explanation given by Munu, my granddaughter. Thank you so much in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

hi, yes that's true, especially in holidays or weekends, the speed of the internet usually reduce, because of having many users, so the speed will divided depend upon the user in your place.

Our internet connection in our home is a cable connection with a router so that we are able to use multiple computers to access the internet at the same time. Our speed is 10 megs which is honestly more speed than we really need. I've never noticed that we have any kind of a problem accessing the internet on weekends and holidays, but occasionally I have to reset the connection which can be somewhat of a pain in the rear end.

oh believe me, these kids know about internet and computers like we knew about phone service and how to work the beta machines, etc. its because its the age where they learn this instead of how to write cursive and how to tell time from a regular clock with numbers on it, instead of digital. my grand daughter never had to learn cursive or telling time without digital, yet she can always tell me exactly how to use the computer and what the problem is and how to fix, upload things from internet, etc. even when she was only 10 yrs.

Hi professor!. I think you had smart grand daughter she give you great analogy. Yes indeed internet connection here sometimes bad if you are not subscribe to broadband connection, which for me still very expensive. I am using just regular connection and sometimes the speed made wanna trow something. I hope someday I can have broadband connection at reasonable price.

Wait, you had me "WOW"ed at 56 Mbps. seriously? mbps? not kbps? In IT, small b in speed measurement (like mbps or kbps) means bit, and the big B means byte. 8 bits is equivalent to 1 byte. 1 byte is the measurement we are usually using. SO i'd like to clarify, is it 56 Mbps, 56 MBps or 56 KBps? I'm asking because 56 is too fast, like it's waaaay beyond DSL which is usually just up to 3 MBps. 56 Mbps is too slow even for dial-up standards. 56 KBps is th typical connection speed for dial-up, which is the one I think you have because you said that you use your landline phone for Internet. Anyway, skipping the mumbo jumbo I said above, you grand-daughter is absolutely right. Especially for dial-up connections. I loved how she knows the term "server". She had her analogy right. Though you wouldn't have such slow speeds if you were using a DSL connection. A dial-up connection (which again, I'm assuming that you're using) is using the phone connection to connect to the Internet. It uses the channels or lines used for voice, which makes it slower, because those lines cannot accommodate fast signals and gets a lot of "noise", deteriorating the signal. When a lot of people use the phone for talking and for the Internet, the lines get so congested. DSL connection (stands for Digital subscriber line) also uses the phone, but it uses a different line, a line for data, which means that the signals travel faster. The lines are dedicated for data so it doesn't cross with the voice calls.

your granddaughter is very smart for her age professor... you must be really proud of her... her illustration about the slow speed of the internet is so accurate and wonderful... i am amazed at her thinking capabilities at such a young age... i am just wondering whether she comes up with the illustration herself or she heard it from somebody else... regardless, it is still amazing... take care and have a nice day...

Hi Professor, your granddaughter is excellent in her info and knowledge related to the internet service. Her analogy heat the right nail absolutely. And this is what we always would like to explain to those who have doubt in the different speed of internet connection in different moment in the same day. I have been using the land line phone through ADSL connection with our ADSL service provider, since the day it had shifted from the dial-up internet connection four years back. It's very much cheaper and quite faster than the former one. Its download speed is 1.0 Mbps whereas the upload speed is 348 kbps. Therefore it takes longer time to to upload image, etc. I do come across slow speed in late evening. I couldn't watch online tv news and programs during the peak moment. It's unbearable to watch the not continuous scene totally. I always download tv series in the morning so that I could enjoy watching them in night time after the hard day work I wish to upgrade the internet connection up 2.0 Mbps high speeds broadband. I don't mind to pay more for faster and smoother speed. But it's disappointed that such service is not available in my place yet Happy posting

dear professor, munu's explanation is the simplest and easiest to digest even by those who are not computer literate. in my case, i was getting intermittent signal hence i was already online and then i am suddenly cut off. i complained calling the network and the signal is doing quite ok now (i hope). then i received an sms from them just a few minutes ago saying: "gud pm. adjustment has been made to your smartbro equipment. please check your connection again. thank you". speed is 10 mbps. that i dont understand anyways. hahaha! have a very nice day. ann

Wow! Your grand daughter is really intelligent to make such an analogy at such a young age. It's not only be cause she is computer literate like most of her generation is, but she was able to make it so easy to understand. ON holidays and sundays, dsl and broadband designated for residential areas do tend to clog up. Sometimes I get to connect with yahoo sometimes I get connected and disconnected immediately. I prefer slow connection to intermittent connection though.

Hi Professor! You must be a proud grandfather to Munu 'cause she is so smart to explain it to you in an easier way. She is so cute! Give my kiss to her for saying that! Me and my hubby always use yahoo messenger and skype to chat. I suggest you use skype rather than yahoo messenger 'cause skype has a better view on videos and voice chats. But I learned lately that skype in some countries are not functioning well so when skype is slow,we go to YM(yahoo messenger) and when ym is slow we go to skype so it's vice versa. We usually have slow net during holidays and I know it's normal because of the traffic it is causing. And I observed also that when it rains in our place, our net is too slow, too bad! See you around Professor!

on my old dial up I could not use any downloaded program well. I used to be able to use java chats and java voice chat when they used to have it. Now it is still very slow in the daytime .. I am on highspeed something but its not dial up but its still low speed compared to the highest we should be since we are out of our providers area so we only get 2% of the normal speed due to our location.. Which just is not fair at all .. since we pay he same normal price as everyone else... My old dial up was 2bps .. then it was 20bps on average now are are 50bps.. the only time we really notice a difference is when updating our virus scan it does not take 12 hrs to update my virus scan anymore takes about one minute.. wow... She definately explains that great, but it also the sites to.. not always our internet so its connecting two water takes to let it flow ours might be big and fast but if the site has a slow one its slow.. still. ,, mylot is pretty slow..

hi professor I think your granddaughter Munu is very bright. That is a great analogy in my way of thinking.I have Time Warner cable jackrabbit edition and it goes pretty fast considering I still have windows 2000 which requires a router to actually connect with the cable. So most sites I use load very fast but mylot is slower a lot of the time I feel mylots the one who hangs u p from time to time. I have no problem at all on any other site as they really load so fast. I have not got the money to upgrade to windows 7.But when I do it should speed things up a lot more for me.

Hi Prof. Your granddaughter Munu Is a very Bright young lady. Her analisis is quite simple but brilliant. We always look for simple explanations but get so tied up in our thoughts and words. I too think her analogy is quite beautiful. As we know, all sources to the intenet have to share with an unthinkable number of people on those days that Munu speaks of. It's the price we pay for this wonderful technology. Don't you think? Leenie

Your granddaughter is totally right about it, though she said it rather metaphorically. The server gets multiple requests from us and responds to those requests in a time shared basis. Sometimes you get a first come first serve response, but it's mostly time shared. On Sundays most of us are home and want to access the internet. There are so many people from India who want to access myLot on that day. Since it's a vacation, a huge number of requests are sent to the server. Soon the server becomes overloaded with all the requests. Then you get a slow or delayed response. Your page loads with a delay. You can't do anything about it. It's all in the hands of BSNL, or in other words, it all went out of the hands of BSNL.

I am responding to this discussion from office which has got Reliance leased line connection and speed is just too good. I use USB connection at home from Tata Photan which is again good and I do not feel any inturuption most of the time. The logic that she has explained is acurate and I appreciate her knowledge and logic. Thank You for sharing.
