Rent a girlfriend for family gathering

I've heard a lot of stories about this. And yes, to be honest I've acted before as the loving girlfriend of one of my closest friend, their family is a filipino-chinese but still the tradition still lies on them. I really feel bad about knowing that were lying not just to his parents but with the rest of his relatives. I thought it will be easy since it will be for a short time and we can forget about it the next day. But my conscience is really bothering me for the rest of the meeting.. that's why we try to tell the truth to his parents before the end of the day. It's funny that it seems ok with them, and they actually like me for that.. hehehe. Now,my friend has his own family and I can say that he gave his parents a true happiness. :)

I don't like the idea of renting a girlfriend just so you can present one to your family. If you don't have a girlfriend, then you don't have a girlfriend! What's wrong with that? You will surely have one at the right and when you want to. There's nothing to be ashamed of when someone doesn't have a girlfriend. No need to worry, too, about your parents getting disappointed.

Wow! It's time I heard about renting a girl friend. If there is such things here in our country I would like to rent too...

I think if you rent a girl friend, your parents will get to know later and if they know that the girl they liked was not a real friend but a rental one, they will not fell good about you. Good that you are not going to do anything like this . I think you will get a genuine girl friend soon and will not require to rent one for new year. All The Best

I agree with you. I have never really heard of anything like this happening except for in the movies. I guess in some ways it can be a good thing, it can save you on the earache from your parents, but like in the movies it is possible for them to fall for you, but this is a rare thing and obviously not real life as it is in the movies. I would be like you really, i would just say, no not met the right woman yet but there is still time. There is no rush but it is better to tell th truth rather than paying someone to be your "girlfriend" for a period of time. Good luck in finding someone, when you do i hope it is a great relationship and i am sure your parents will be really happy for you.

Hi ,it is sad but we live in throw away society , everything is for sale ....so if the Chinese man needs someone to be eye candy [girlfriend ?]...he is going to find someone who will take him up on his offer . they are either to career orientated or to coward or both to get someone for themselves ...though I am sure there are many who would be looking for that someone special but can't find anybody.....then again its not something new , people are always trading each another !

mandy8611, Like you, I have to agree with your disagreement on the lying part. However, for every cause there's a reason and sometimes it is inevitable when parents are being over-enthusiastic to the point that they are unknowingly pressurizing their child into marriage. And, the son in this case, may just simply want his parents to back off - to do his part on his social life. Some cultures are just too traditional and it will affect the present generation who just like having their own idea and ways of doing things.

If I were on your shoe I wouldn't rent a girl just to have someone to present on our family gathering. Beside if I'll do that for sure in no time they would still find out that it was just a show. So, for me much better to wait for the girl or boy who is truly my girl friend or boy friend.

I am for rent! That is a great way to make money, providing there is no hankey pankey between the unmarried couple. Though, it can be disappointing to the people who were led to believe it is a future bride.

greetings! if you can afford it, then why not? pick someone who's really your type so you'd really enjoy your holiday. no one really gets hurt in the process. your family is satisfied, you're satisfied, and the fake gf is satisfied as well (with the payment of course). just tell them afterwards that you've broken up with her, LOL

Just tell the truth. It would hurt the parents if they found out that you were lying all the time.

i think rent a girlfriend is a lie that is not necessary, better to be honest, however honestly is better than malingering

I think this is some kind of funny that you need to have to show your parents that you have a GF. I really do not know the need to do so just to please your parents. Well if I were you I would be honest and just tell them that you are not yet ready to have one. It be less expensive than hiring a temporary GF just to look good in front of your parents.

Wow, amazing. Renting a girlfriend for family benefit? I would not do that if I am a guy. Yes, just as you said, when the lie is known, parents will hurt more and will not trust us any longer. It is better to tell the truth. It's different when you have to be in a party with friends. You might want to rent a girlfriend just to ake the party merrier.

I didn't know this was a practice in China. I will never rent a girl to pose as my girlfriend. I don't get the logic of it. Is it just for the New Year?

Yes, you are right,no lies.Tell the family not to pressure you because you are trying to find a perfect girl to introduce to them. But if renting a girlfriend is part of the culture, then so be it. I mean, i wont try to stir up something out of ones culture. I will respect that. Others who rent probably would want to please their parents, give them that benefit for as long as the temporary girlfriend agree to it and get paid.
