my broken down dodge grand caravan - driving a used dodge grand caravan

Or what they now call pre-owned car. As if the change in name meant an improvement in quality. I drive a used 99 Dodge Caravan, and it died on me this morning. At the middle of the road! Ever since I bought it, it has been bleeding me dry. I am no car expert, so I didn’t think it would be this much trouble, and this expensive when I bought it. Now, I have to get it fixed, with money that I don’t have. Not to mention the amount I already spent to get it towed. Do you drive a pre-owned(used) vehicle? Does it give you much headache like mine? Is it costing you lots of money to get it fixed constantly too? Yes, this is a rant. When do you think you could afford to get it replaced with a new one?

When I first started out I would only buy pre-owned cars and boy were they surely my head aches. I was halted just about any where and at all odd hours where as no one could help. So after a few years I have learned my lessons and although expensive ones, choose only to buy new with extended warranties. I sure hope I do not jinx myself after typing this as so far so good and I did not re-new my extended warranty 2 months ago. lol

I thought myself wise to have bought a new car back in 2004. I thought I didn't need the headache so I would just settle for a brand new car with extended warranty. And then came the day when I needed a bigger car. Seeing that I could get a new-ish Dodge Caravan for a mere $6000, I grabbed it not knowing that it'll cause me lots of trouble down the road. The last of which is this being broken down in the middle of the road(other discussion). Thanks.

I too have had a lot of problems with used cars, I still to this day have never purchased one brand new as the finances just aren't there BUT so far Dodges have always been good to me!

Buying a used car can be equated to buying a used house; they both need work done to them. They're both going to cost you money, but only the house will appreciate in value whereas cars, especially new ones, depreciate very quickly. You must be prepared to spend more money on it other than just the sale price. It can work out really well for you, often profitably so, if you like fixing cars, not just the mechanics of it, but more so these days, all the electronic components within. If you have previous experience with a certain make & model, it would be a good idea to stick to that one. You would be surprised at just how many mechanics do not really know how to properly look after certain makes & models. Preventative maintenance is a good start. Run a My Lot search on your make, model & build date of your car or even the engine number & check out all the common problems that others have found. Replace parts with genuine new or reliable re-builds that have caused trouble for others over time & it becomes a good investment. Old cars are really good to have. They're often made from tougher stuff than the flimsy modern things you see today. So if you accidentally back into a stobie pole, you should still be OK with a call to your mobile dent removalist (or just leave it!). Do this with a new car & you'll set off everything from air-bags to alarms & end up with huge costs or an unwanted insurance claim & higher premiums ever after.

Hello veganbliss. Thanks for the very informative response. Unfortunately, I am not a car guy. Although I like driving, I am not adept in fixing mechanical troubles in automobiles. I do have another car which I bought brand new. And that car I maintain its preventative maintenance regularly. It's just this van that I don't care too much.

Me too, I have never had a used car, always new, probably the cheapest cars on the market, but new, my mother used to always say w 'with used cars you are buying someone elses troubles".. wish I could afford a nice new car now...

"with used cars you are buying someone elses troubles" That is very appropriate! And so very true. Your mom is a very wise woman. As I suffer through all the mechanical troubles of my van, it is becoming clear that I am dealing with the previous owner's troubles. Thanks.

I wouldn't say I hate used cars, at least not all of them anyway. Out of all the used vehicles my husband and I've had, there was one experience that was really bad... I had desperately wanted a family car...one where I could drive the kids around. My husband and I had been down to one vehicle at the time...a little old pick-up truck my husband needed for work. (By the way, it was a single cab. Try taking a family of 4 in that! LOL) Anyhow, after getting fed up about the whole thing, I set my mind to putting money aside for a car. I didn't tell my husband about it...at least not right away as we're terrible about money if we both know it's "in the bank". LOL After saving up about half way, I finally couldn't hold it in any longer...I just had to let him know! LOL It gave him incentive to work harder than ever...just so we could save up and get a car that much faster. I couldn't wait to get a car and started my search right away! I found one I thought was just perfect for us. Although it was an older car, it had low miles, only one owner, and a clean title! I ran a carfax on it, just to be safe (it came back clean) and told the owner I was interested in seeing it... The owner came by so my husband could check it out. It ran perfectly too! Okay, so the car wasn't perfect, it was 8 years old, after all. It had it's share of dings and even a slight dent, but overall it was a great car...or so we thought. After owning it for 6 months, the darn engine blew up! To make matters worse when my husband finally had it towed down to a shop (to see what could be done and how much it would cost) he found out from the mechanic that the car's rear end didn't match with the rest of the car! OMG, were we pissed! All that time, effort, and money spent just to get a lemon of a car! Needless to say having that happen put a damper on things. I wasn't interested in getting a car, even when my husband came into some money! That was about 5 years ago. We've had better luck with used vehicles since then. Hopefully it stays that way! Happy mylotting!

I'm actually in the market for a new vehicle right now! I feel that it's about time to retire the old Dodge. I'm still figuring out if I should take my chances and get used one, or just bite the bullet and finance a new one. I've just been filling out questionnaires from dealership online, and I've been fielding calls from agents left and right. Hopefully, if I decide on a used one, I don't get something like you got. Where parts of the car don't match the rest! Thanks sacmom.

Sorry to hear that your vehicle is giving you such problems bounce! I honestly have a lot of luck so far with Dodges. I have owned a Neon which served me well, and the Caliber I have now has also been decent to me except I found out last weekend that all of the tires need to be replaced as their is no tread! BUT that is just regular wear and tear I suppose.

I have had a ton of luck with my car, and I have been really lucky with dodges like I said as my neon was good to me as well. Anyone can say "avoid a dodge" just like Joe Blow down the street might say "avoid a ford" and susie sunshine around the next corner might say "avoid a chevy". It's all a matter of personal opinion so I would make your decision about your next vehicle based on that ... After all YOU are the one that is going to be driving with it right?

A few years ago, when the family went to California, we rented a Caliber to drive around. I found it really nice. Even the kids loved it! I'm seriously thinking of getting a new vehicle next year to replace my Caravan, and all of my friends say 'avoid a Dodge'. I'm glad that yours isn't giving you any headaches. Thanks for responding!

I like to use cars. I love to sit in a luxury car. I love very much to travel in a long size car with my loved ones in a rainy season on a lonely road. Of course, those all my dreams, but the truth is, i have no car till now. I am living in my small village only. So a village wanna sit in a crores valuable car. Let see, what will happens?

Personally we have not owned a Used or Pre Owned vehicle in quite a few yrs. We have always been known to buy New. To me it makes more sense to pay out a payment and have a Good car, than to buy something you have to fix all the time. We hear of people paying out more in car repairs that we pay for car payments in 6 months. At least we know with the car payment on a New car we have a warranty and usually a car expected to last a while.

I used to think that way. That I always would want a new car. But for this Dodge Grand Caravan, the lure of its price tag hooked me in. After this experience, I'm will NOT be getting any used car soon. Hopefully this year I would finally be able to replace this van. Thanks!

Naturally everyone would prefer to have a new vehicle, but with the cost involved it becomes far more practical to purchase a used car. There are some very good used cars available, depending on how much you are prepared to spend. As for the problems with a used car, this is always going to be a risk. Many people are fortunate to buy a used car and have no problems with it, but there is no guarantee so you gave to accept that the potential for problems will exist.

It always amazes me when I see people go through used cars and get lucky with it. I mean, when they don't experience any problems with it. Maybe they are just mechanically-inclined which makes them avoid the 'unlucky' ones that people like me tend to get. Thanks Asylum!

That's the thing with used cars, you can never really tell how much it would cost you to maintain it. But usually, it is more than it is worth. I think the last 2 big maintenance expense on my van is more than the cost of it. Thanks.

I have a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero that was old lady driven.....really, it was-we know the old lady....we have had no problems with it besides the regular brakes and rotors. We are looking a buying a mid size SUV...the reason being we are tall people(6'3" and 5'1") and we are tired of falling in this car and crawling out. It is quite low o the ground. My husband is very god at mechanics, he knows what to look for when buying used. We have been lucky with our used, or excuse me, pre-owned cars. I hope your gives you no more trouble.

I wish I was good at cars too. So that I wouldn't have to deal with this old van. I'm looking into moving to a new job. And with it, I am hoping that there would be enough money to get an SUV too! Used, or I mean, pre-owned, so I could get rid of this heap of junk. Thanks.

Hi bounce, As for me I do not hate but do not like used cars. And to be frank things like car I never go for the already owned by one. If you bye a new one, forget about the cost, you would have satisfaction but on the second hand cars that satisfaction is not there. There is always the feeling of otherness. Hope you get it somehow drivable and sell it and buy a new one.

Unfortunately, when I looked up the 'blue-book' for the market value of my van, it wasn't that much. It would be better off that I keep it for a couple of years more, and just throw it away. Or sell for scrap. I would definitely want a new car. There are a few things going on that might make me able to get a new one. Thanks for the response.

Used car can and are good when you don't have enough money to buy a new one but you need to use a car, for work or other things. It's true that you pay more because each piece is already used and it's breaking, but at least you resolve your problems. After all a car must take you from point A to point B.
@bounce58 (17387)

That is exactly how I look at this van. Just a means to bring more people from point A to point B. Unfortunately, it is very temperemental as it has a lot of problems. Broken down at the middle of the road, twice already. Thanks, and welcome to myLot!

I think if you are car-savvy, and you know how to do repairs, you would be fine. You could make sure that it is always running smoothly, and you could even upgrade it so that when you do sell it, the depreciation wouldn't be too much. Good luck!

My car not long ago had to have a new alternator that was just to expensive and I just had to pay for it. I did buy a used jeep liberty in 2005 but it was a 2003 though I thought it would be in good condition and when I got it the ac went on it in the middle of summer so I brought it back and they fixed it since it was under warranty still .

Warranties are a great thing! It doesn't spare us the hassle, but it does save us from the big unnecessary expenses. It's great that you had it with your jeep. My 'extended' already expired so any trouble I get with this used car of mine, I have to fork out myself.

The car that I drive is very well used at this point in time. However, it was brand new when we bought it eight years ago. However, the car that my husband sold to his parents last year was used when we bought it nine years ago. It was never a problem for us and it has been very dependable for his father as well. The thing is, my husband used to work in a mechanic's shop so he knows how to do the vast majority of work on cars himself.

You have an (unfair) advantage! I think the people that really take advantage of used cars are the people that know a thing or two about fixing it. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. I am dependent on what a mechanic would tell me. And I just fork out the money to have it fixed.

I currently drive a small used car - Nissan Micra. It is actually alright, it runs and it gets me to somewhere. Maintaining is a hassle though. It seems to have problems from time to time. Hence, if it is a car, or electronics it is better to get it brand new.
@bounce58 (17387)

I think cars today are mostly electronic. That's why even if the electronic parts fail, the cars wouldn't run. I've learned my lesson. The next car I buy would be brand new. I think the extra cost for a newer model would just offset the cost for maintenance anyway. Thanks.

I do hate old/used cars... a little while ago my uncle's car droke and we were trying to fix it for ages (3 weeks). Well in the end we use over 300 dollars and the only problem was the alarm made the car die... so when we took the alrm off it worked at last. We missed out on so many things

Hello qetuo1888. Todays cars are mostly electronic. And any one of the it's gadgets malfunctioning could definitely cause the car to die down. That was an unnecessary $300 to spend! Thanks.
