How Far Can Your Kids Walk?

We have a family staying with us at the moment, who have just been telling us about their previous travels. They are very physical, outdoor loving people and have just completed a 300 km walk through Portugal. What is so incredible about this story is that their 8 year old son accompanied them! Obviously it was completed over a period of time, but I cannot imagine the reaction I'd get from my kids if I suggested they walk 300km! How far will your kids walk? Would they enjoy a walking holiday? Could they manage 300km? For that matter, could you?

We generally do a lot of walking in the summer. My kids have been known to walk 4 miles non-stop. 300 km seems too much to me though!

A kilometre is approximately 0.62 the length of a mile, so 300 km is "only" 186 miles. Sound better?

One day I'd love to discover how far I walk in an average day, just doing my daily chores.

I knew a KM was less than a mile.. I know a 10K is like just over 6 miles. No.. that doesn't make it sound better, LOL.

Unfortunately, my children inherited my scoliosis so they could not manage such a long walk. But when they were children, before their spines began giving them trouble, they would walk miles and run miles in search of adventure and fun! I think walking through Portugal would be a magnificent experience. I miss long walks, I miss running. That family is so blessed!

They really make the most of all the opportunities the outside world is giving them.

It's better not to put pressure on children. They should do willing, I think. Only then they will enjoy what they are doing.

I agree with you. the child who did this walk seems perfectly willing, but I'll bet there aren't many kids who would be.

That's called children's freedom , as an adult we are enjoying our freedom too. If the child enjoys such good activities, no need to discourage them. Enjoy with them. I love very much to see a chid is happy and contended what they are doing.

Hi. GreenMoo. I don't know how far 300 km is. But if it is too far, I know that my kids could not walk that far. I know that when I take my kids with me to the park to walk on the track, my kids start to get tired eventually. They would tire at least 25 minutes after walking. So, if my kids walked longer than this, they would complain of their legs being tired and them being thirsty. It is great that kids exercise, but I think that they should not over do themselves either.

One of the earlier respondents worked out that it's around 186 miles!

I know what you're saying. My kids will walk but there will be a point that they will say I can't walk anymore. My Daughter is good for that, so I ask her, do you have feet? She will reply, no. LOL She is very funny. My son will get that way also. But they have no problem when they are running around in the park and playing, but when it comes to walking, they just want to float.

My kids are both pretty good at walking, but my eldest would far rather cycle. I've never really tested them over a long distance but I imagine they would tire and then the moaning would spoil the walk!

I could not do this now. I think my daughter could though. She is so active and fit. I am working on getting back to a more fit self. My son could possibly do this. Of course they are adults as well.

They walked that distance over a period of time, camping in between. Having met the boy, I think he probably walked twice as far as his parents, dancing up and down the track!

I used to be able to walk for miles with no consequences. Now, my lower back seizes up when I stop.

I find that I'm the opposite. If my back is achey, I find walking helps to loosen it.
