Are we scaring our kids?

Children today are often worried about or even terrified by the prophecies surrounding the end of the world. This is especially true of December 21, 2012, the date the Long Cycle of the Mayan Calendar comes to an end. This is a sad state of affairs since there are certainly enough frightening things in our world as it is, without scaring our kids with images of hypothetical disasters. Most parents hopefully, will not discuss such things when there children are present, but of course they still hear about it. Some parents and other adults are so scared themselves that the children will pick up on it anyway. It's important that we assure our children that they have nothing to fear from such prophecies. Do you agree?

We are scaring more than just our kids. Adults are scared out of their wits too. With the recent apocalypse, many adults actually quit their jobs. I feel sorry imagining all those people having to go and beg for their jobs back. I agree that the children will pick up on how their parents and other adults are feeling. I think that parents should joke about it to their kids, so that they are not so scared. Personally, I think that all this is just ruthless fear-mongering and the ironic part is that all the "good" religious people are the ones who are so scared of this stuff. If you believe that God protects good people and you are good, then there is no sense in being so scared about it. Then again, I wouldn't exactly say there's much sense in any of it at all.

I feel sorry for any children that might be affected but I feel absolutely NO sympathy for any of the adults who were stupid enough to fall for that idiot's prophecy to the extent of quitting their jobs, maxing out their credit cards and no longer paying their bills! There will probably be some homeless and hungry kids because of those morons! Being scared is one thing but since these kinds of predictions have been made many times in the past and obviously we're still here it's just plain stupid to take for granted that this time it's going to come true. Hi Pose: I definetly agree with your point of view on this subject. In my case I won't talk about this with my children and in case they ask me I will tell them that they don't have to fear and ask them not to take these news so seriously because almost all these 'prophecies' are fake. ALVARO

Hi starsailover, You are right in assuring your children. It's too bad all parents don't do the same. Thanks for sharing. Blessings.

I totally agree with you. I blame most of this on the media. They don't need to report this nonsense all the time. There are too many quacks out there with these predictions. I just tell my kids not to pay any attention to them.

Of course we are. There seems to be a fashionation amoung human beings for terror. If you believe in energy then you will accept that be publishing all this maybe, what if, terrible things that can happen to the world, we may contribute to the realization of this terror. If I had children who were frightened I would ask them what they would do differently if they knew for sure the world would end. Then explain that each and every one of us will die and very few know when. That is why it is so important to live for NOW.

We have to explain to our children about this things, so that when they hear it from other children, they know that they are just prophecies. We have to be decisive too and tell them that only God knows when that time will be and that they should just continue being good, so whenever that time comes God will take away our fear and assure us that we are safe with HIM.

hi pose 123, i agree that we have to assure our children to have nothing to fear from doomsday prophesies. if i had children, i would just tell them that it is not our business, since nobody can exactly predict the doomsday and there's nothing we can do about it. as a Christian, i would tell them to believe that Jesus is the only savior and that He will save you when you die, and to do what Jesus has told us to do. besides, i would tell them to enjoy this life as much as they can, to do good things for other people, to study hard, work hard, play hard. and even if the world really ends on december 21, 2012, everybody will die. so, nothing to be scared of:)

I don't think many kids are frightened about this, I recently was a t a birthday party where kids were discussing this and when we listened to them they all were saying we adults should make up our minds if the world is going to end or not so that they can skip studies this year and have lot more parties, date who they want to before they all perish. It was real funny some of them wanted latest iphones etc before the world ends. But it was all said in fun and many of them seriously thought its another bogus call and world's not ending too soon thought they said the way we are treating our environment would lead to even more disasters occurring in future and hoped that we should do something about it. Few of them told what they do to help environment like planting trees, saving electricity etc. It was educating to listen to them.

Hi mansha, Thanks for sharing your thoughts and it's good to know that all kids are not being scared by this nonsense. Far too many are scared though as school counselors and others will verify. Some children, especially if they are teenagers, are just too smart to be fooled by such things but many younger kids have nightmares. Blessings.

In truth, I haven't noticed too many kids scared about things like 2012 to any major degree. Regarding my personal views on the 2012 doomsday theories, I think that they're possible, and if one wishes to survive, it's better to be safe than sorry. Read up and educate yourselves on the possibilities. If it happens, you'll have a chance at survival if you prepare yourself. If it doesn't happen, oh well. You'll have lost some time and energy. So what? Better safe than sorry, that's my creed (;

Hi phr4nkr4wk5, Thank you for commenting and I guess anything is possible but too many people are making a fortune scaring people. The end of this world for all of us is when we die and that could be next year or twenty years from now. Children pick up on it very quickly when their parents are scared. Blessings.

I've heard so many things about Dec. 21, 2012. People believe the Mayans so much cause no prophecy by them had ever failed yet but I don't think we should even pay attention to it. I mean over the years before the internet the so called end of the world have already been predicted. When I was a child someone spread out the news that the sun will touch the earth and kill everyone in it. It didn't happen did it? The news about the end of the world these days are spreading like fire cause of the internet and media. People are more connected now than before. People share these type of things and talk about it like what are we going to do when that happens? I have 2 teenage kids who have heard of these news. I just told them let's hope that the news about 2012 is not true but if it is then why worry about it? I said if we die, we die together. It could happen so fast it might not even be painful. What sad is what happens in the world in a daily basis...people die from all sort of things - disease, accidents, murders. A lot of these people left their families behind without warning. Now that's sad. I mean if the end will really come in 2012 then who on earth would do something about it? No one. I say live our lives to the fullest like every next day would be the end of the world and you'll see it doesn't make a difference. I'd rather see my kids enjoy each day of their life than worry about 2012.

Hi gicolet, I agree with you, there is nothing to fear and we should enjoy life everyday and help others enjoy it as well. Those who spread doom and gloom are certainly not doing that. I don't believe that the Mayans were predicting the end of the world, but probable the start of a new age, maybe a time of peace among nations. I don't mean that it would begin the next day but that it would be the beginning of a process. Thank you for sharing. Blessings.

Hi pose, Some coincidences like soothsaying or prophecies have made things still worse. Since my school days I have been haring such stories that on such and such month of the year the world would perish. But so far nothing such incident has taken place. If our kids are focused already to such thing we should not hesitate to explain what is what. And those little ones should be kept at arms length. They can be given a concrete example like all things that grow and become old have to leave this place for other people to replace. Hence, even if you hear such thing take them easy and tell your kids that the Earth too has its life span and possibility is there that it undergoes a huge changes.

Yes, it does seem senseless to be scaring the kids. You are right that the information will get to them from somewhere. Parents should be talking with their children on dealing with such things. Regardless, children do learn no matter what, especially when the end of the world doesn't show up. Kids are much smarter than people give them credit for.

Hi bird, I agree that kids are very smart and they will learn, but parents must show them that there is nothing to fear from such things. If the parents are scared than the children will pick up on it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Blessings.

I was amused by one teen's declaration of the falsity of doomsday predictions. She said that the world does not end until we have lived our lives, too. How dare these ominous soothsayers threaten to terminate our young lives. It's lunacy.

Hi eileenleyva, I can see how you would be amused but unfortunately many kids are very scared. Sometimes it comes from one or even both of the parents being scared themselves. People need to think these things through and they will know that there is nothing to fear. Thanks for sharing this. Blessings.

it is so unnecessary for people to be saying that the world is going to end. It isn't and when Jesus comes back it will be so sudden when can't notice. Also the Bible says we will never be able to know the time that He is going to come. I am glad that my little sister understands this. Because if not she would be freaking out over nothing.

Pose123: There is no need to tell those prophecies to your children. As we know, that's some unknown things which should be revealed by our scientists. It useless to worry about it especially for children. They are the one that should be optimistic about our planet. They ought to feel true love but disasters. Good luck!

Hi szz, I agree that we should not discuss such things around our children, but some will and others will hear it from these kids. If the parents are fearful the children will quickly pick up on it. Hopefully most parents will be able to assure their kids. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Blessings.

You are definitely onto something. I don't remember hearing all of these prophesies when I was a child, however, if I was a child today, I'd be scared out of my wits!!! I'm glad not to be a child today, and I feel incredibly sorry for those children hearing about all this stuff. Same with the changing weather. Not as many tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. when I was a child either, less terrorist attacks, and deadly diseases. I was a child of the 80's, so not long ago. I would NOT want to be a child today, nor would I want to have children today. If things can change this much in 30 years, what are they going to be like in another 30 years? Scary just to think about that.

Hi. Pose123. My kids have not mentioned this to me at all. I don't think that their teachers and classmates have either, too. If so, my children would come home and tell me about what has been said. I will tell them that it is nothing to fear because the world will not end, December 21, 2012. I only believe in the Bible and the Bible clearly states that no one not even the angels or Jesus Himself knows when the world will end. So, this is what I am going by. Since no one knows but God only, I can't fathom myself to just believe whatever Harold Camping and the other false prophets are saying. Shame on him for making children scared, he should know better than to predict false predictions and have kids scared. He is not only a false prophet, but a monster as well!
