Internet: connectivity or audience?

a witness to everything we do - making the internet an audience

So, I was watching another old episode of House last night when this discussion came to me. It was the episode about a lady who kept blogging everything about what's happening in her life, including her sickness. A question was asked on what the internet was, for her. She started on the idea that the world wide web would enable everybody to connect. That nobody would become lonely anymore. But over the years, her need for the internet changed, as it became an audience. How about you? I know that we use this to connect with others, but the question is, has it become an audience for every little thing we do? When did it cross the line? I know that it has become this audience for me. At least a sounding board for my many rants.

It is rather unfortunate that things could go a little overboard as far as internet usage is concerned. I think that oftentimes we need an outlet wherein we can vent our emotions: pour out our hearts and soul to the whole world thus enabling us to feel better inside. The internet can help us with this concern. Moreso, it also provide us with income opportunity! It aint that bad at all! The issue of going beyond the boundaries on what is appropriate highly dependent in us to evaluate. Happy day!

You've got a great point! That people need an 'outlet' to vent out their emotions. And people need something that would give them an income opportunity. The internet does provide for these two avenues, I'm just not sure that it is a good idea all the time. Thanks.

Indeed. It all depends on the user whether or not he thread further on the "inappropriate" way of venting his emotions. I agree that there are people who exploit the use of internet for their own selfish purposes.

I may have seen that episode.. it's an older one, right? Where the girl (from That 70's Show) asked her audience which type of heart tube to have placed? The one from the pig would last longer but her audience was against using animal parts.. even though her husband or boyfriend wanted her to get the pig one. Something like that.. In answer to your question.. I think it can be both. There are times we just want to talk to someone.. and for some of us that's generally easier said than done without the internet. Having been a stay at home mom for most of the past 8 years.. and also a lazy home body.. I don't really have a lot of friends. I do have "friends" but none so close that I feel as if I can call them out of the blue to talk about things. However I have tons of friends on the internet.. and have at least a handful of people I can e-mail or instant message when life gets me down. Of course I can also vent on Mylot.. as I'm rather close to a few people here. Though I know there are also times I've used the internet as an audience. I use it for bragging purposes rather frequently.. and I share pictures of my kids showing off how beautiful or talented they are.

Hehe! Yes it was that episode! I guess the internet does make it convenient. To reach out and connect to someone. When we don't have the luxury of real/physical friends close to us. It does crosses the line sometimes. Specially if we have things that we are rather proud of. Thanks.

hi bounce58. i think the internet serves both purposes. it can become an audience to some and a chance to connect to others. i for one have always thought that the only limitation on how we can use the internet is our own imagination. i wouldn't mind it a blogger has used the internet as his/her audience, what i do mind is when the topics discussed are superficial. one can argue that something important maybe unimportant to another. anyway, i would say that the internet serves both purposes and it is really ultimately up to the user on how to use it. cheers!!!

Yes it does serves both purpose! And yes sometimes it can get annoying if discussions can be superficial. Even if the poster is just using it to vent out all his/her ideas in a form of therapy. Thanks allen.

I use the Internet myself mainly to communicate with others. I also live writing in private journals and sometimes I share these on the world wide web. I think that blogging is very popular and it gives us a chance to rant and rave as you say and share our thoughts. By doing this we will probably pick up an audience or a few fans along the journey. I think the Internet has become a very good friend, a close companion to many people around the globe! The Internet has become their lifeline so to speak. I have become very attached to the Internet and to do without would be nothing less than an absolute catastrophy! Andrew

Hey Andrew! It's a great analogy you got there! That the internet does seem like a friend. And like real friends, it can provide a lot of benefits, like being there when we just need to vent. And like a real friend, it can also bite you in the butt sometimes. Thanks.

I think that for me the internet is still somewhere in the middle. There is a source of connectivity because I can connect with people almost any time of the day or night. However, through the recent developments in the life of my family it has become an audience for me as well because of the fact that I can rant and talk about those things that are bothering me without making those people that are the closest to me feel bad.

Sometimes, it's just what we need. Specially if we are going through a rough patch, and just need to rant (and/or rave). The anonymity sometimes is a great thing too. Thanks!

Yes, there are people who have the internet as their audience. They post every little detail of what they are currently doing in the net. They are happy when others would comment. In my opinion, the internet is for connectivity. But it's not for everyone to know about my life. I still value my privacy, so i don't post for everyone to know what i am doing for the day. That's too much for me. But i respect them for what they are doing and i understand their need for attention.

Hello SIMPLYD. Some people just can't help themselves and crave for attention. And the internet just makes it easy. Thanks.

Hi bounce, Yes the internet to a sense is a complete audience for anyone across the globe to be able to see and or view our activity. While it is okay for some to discus just about anything it is quite important to remember when doing so that it is written in black and white for anyone to see, even years to come. Therefore, for anyone who does not want something to be seen, we should refrain. I do give out bits and pieces of my life but not something that I would need to hide from later in the future. I generally post into discussions things that I have done and or about me. Nothing direct with personal demographic information, which to a sense is just about what I would say anyways offline. There are some that come to mind that do give off way too much TMI, and have no issues with it as it is very therapeutic for them to vent and get things out. Then there are those that give off way too much TMI, and later have regrets. The key I suppose is place online what one is comfortable with the world to see, and do not place online things, events one will regret later.

The thing is, there are just people that are driven to post way TMI on the net. Yes it may be therapeutic, but you can't just help feel that somewhere down the road, all these information online could backfire on them. I'm sure that this 'audience' where all these information is posted for, wouldn't be necessarily behind them when they need help. Thanks HWG.
