Crocheting in Hard Times

I love to crochet! No doubt about it. But I have found that I enjoy it even more durring these hard times. Recently, like many others we've had to cut back on things and cable was one thing to go. At first I thought that I would really miss it, but then I found that this was the perfect opportunity to get more crocheting done. Did you know that if your willing to spend the time online that you can just about find any pattern (or one similiar) that you can purchase online for free! Yes, it does take time, you have to use a variety of search words, and you have to visit alot of blogs but you can find it. Also in these times I've had to stop subscribing to various magazines. But I've found it alot of fun to revisit the magazines I already have and rediscover projects I've wanted to make and have forgotten all about. But yarn costs money! Yes it does, so what I've done is I've been buying redheart at walmart. This yarn comes in many many colors, its durable, machine washable, and afforadable. So you can't make a fancy new sweater out of angora. Why not make afghans, hats, mittens, scarves, for family, friends, or charities. These items are well appriciated in the colder areas. Places like Joannes and Hobby Lobby have regular sales and sometimes offer free shipping on holidays like memorial day, labor day, fourth of July, and such. Free shipping on its own can save you a boat load of money. So don't let hard times deprive you of your hobby, just try to think of ways you can cut the cost down.

I too enjoy making items both crocheting and knitting. I started when we had very little and never stopped. Yes yarn is expensive but you can find lots on Ebay and craigslist. I saw a add on Craigslist about two months ago. It said a box of yarn for free just pay shipping and handling. I ended up with a huge box that I paid $20 shipping and handling. There was 10 skeins unused of Lion brand Boucle which right there was well worth the cost as they run around $5 in the stores around here. Not to mention 25 other mixed unused skeins! I was a happy lady. I also shop for yarn at garage sales. I like scrappy blankets and sweaters so this works well for me and there are always people who buy one or two too many skeins for projects.

Oh my, I completely forgot about craigslist! Wow, you did get a good deal, I would be doing the happy dance too. Itss funny, but I've only made little sweaters for my granddaughters and never one for myself. I think I should put that on my "to do" list. It's cool to find out what different things people do and learn when there isn't alot of money to go around. My hubby gets crabby, I like to take advantage and do more reading, crocheting, and re-aquainting myself with crochet magazines. I'm very good at entertaining myself, I think its a woman thing.

I've had a bunch of people give me yarn because they are cleaning out their houses, that kind of thing. A lot of people are decluttering now, and so I benefit, yay! I have been using it to make little gifts.
