Eating dogs in third world countries- two birds with one stone?

United States

Here in the United States, we have a problem with dog and cat overpopulation. Our shelters are flooded with stray animals that have no homes. Many families cannot take care of dogs if both partners have to work all day. These dogs and cats are often euthanized even if they are healthy because there is nobody to adopt them. We also have a hunger problem. Everyone has a hunger problem. Some hungry people might have objections to eating dogs and cats, and some may even be vegetarians, but the hungry vegetarians can be helped another day. I do think that if I were starving in the street, I would happily accept a cooked dog taco, as long as it didn't taste too bad. I have a pet dog, and I have never thought of eating him, but luckily, he is not homeless. Naturally, there are countries that eat dogs, strays in particular, and that hasn't really killed anyone, though some do have objections to it. People's pets have gotten loose and snatched up by restaurants, but if a dog is kept inside, surely nobody would kidnap it and sell it as food. I don't think dogs are that much different than chickens, though they are cuter and fuzzier. If I had a pet chicken, I would treat him like a dog, but I would still eat chicken, because it's delicious and full of protein.

I read that somewhere in the USA (was it San Francisco?) had banned the keeping of pets unless you intended to eat it. I guess if you really wanted a dog or a cat and wanted to comply with the new law, you could feel less guilty when you came to serve it up for lunch. Most people have trouble eating animals they have given names to. Personally, if they taste like chicken I might give it a go. Great discussion and definitely food for thought!

I only really would have a problem with the part where you have to skin and gut the thing, but I could ship my dog off somewhere and have him come back in a cute little ground meat package, it wouldn't be much different than real meat, other than the fact that he lived a happy life and wasn't fattened up and filled with hormones. I think he would taste like pork.

Hello! You have a really intelligent discussion. You're thinking like a human. I can see many people defending the idea of leaving dogs and cats in peace. I can't see why is it okay to eat cows and pigs, specially in the way they are raised, but not dogs or cats. I wouldn't eat a dog, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who would. However, I don't think that dogs and cats that are homeless would be eaten. They would surely transmit a lot of diseases, they are grown in the streets eating junk, trash, with no conditions. Cows, pigs and chickens, by the other hand, are raised to be eaten, having only the certain kind of food and hormones. I'd like to know if you agree with what I am saying. Dogs and cats that grow by themselves would not be good food, there would be no way to track the quality of the food. This would mean just one thing: dog farms. Which means the problem wouldn't be solved at all. I live in a "third world country", we do not eat dogs, and I think we will not do it anytime soon. My solution to dog and cat overpopulation would be the end of pet commerce. Pets that have breed are usually procreate to be sold, but what about the others? They are abandoned if they don't meet requirements. I believe that, if pets couldn't be sold anymore (only given, or things like that), their numbers would properly adjust. Also, government should keep control on the adoptions from family. If a family has no way to create two pets and wants to adopt one, then that pet should be castrated before sent home. However, that generates another discussion, haha! Thanks for the intelligent discussion, lilbabycatapillar. Respectfully, Munhozmib.

Many people breed for a living and would object to any laws forbidding it, especially when it comes to creating all of those silly new breeds like the cockapoo and yorkiepoo and puggle. Some area has tried to feed and castrate stray cats and let them loose again, but it takes up too much money. Then again, homeless animals really don't look healthy enough to make good food. Tender, juicy baby puppies might have a chance of making an edible puppy veal, I suppose!

I never thought it was wrong to eat dogs or cats before. Sure, they might be pets but any animal could be a pet. You can still eat them. If you say it's not right to eat dogs and you eat stuff like beef, pork, fish then you're a hypocrite basically. They're all animals, and other animals eat them. This is just the natural way of things... if you starve enough you would eat anything you could to survive, no matter what it is.

Even if dogs are more intelligent than fish or chicken, even they have their predators. Some hawks and snakes eat small dogs, and some crocodiles and alligators in say, Florida, have eaten larger dogs. It is just so natural for animals to eat animals.

I am in a third world country, and there are people around me eating cats or dogs, but i would never intentionally eat any of them. I myself is a dog keeper, and there is a dog-eating restaurant near my house.Every time I walk by that place, i feel sick and quickly walk away. I dislike those people who eat cats or dogs. I do think that people have already had a number of meat to choose to eat: beef, mutton, pork, chicken, duck and goose, sometimes deer and horse. I think that's pretty enough for anyone to eat cats or dogs. besides, I left my ex-bf for his eating dog meat. I just cannor stand it.

this question came from another user in another forum site that goes: "What is the different between Chicken and Dogs" why is it forbidden to eat dog while it is ok to eat chicken? there are the same mammals, they are the same friendly but dogs have to option to hurt people by biting... dogs cannot be considered as endangered species.... if dogs is a mans best friend so what, is that an appropriate reason no to eat dogs? if cats is not a mans best friend, why is it still forbidden to eat? is it always we follow what stated in the bible for the required animals on the list only to eat?

here is another thing, they ban eating dogs but not banning to eat cows... i felt sorry for the cow to be murdered and cooked and eat... the way we look at cow's eyes tears of pain when about to mercy killing.... is there a difference between a dog and a cow? a cow is more mercy compare to dog...

I thought the responses to your question were interesting. I don't think I'd like to eat dog meat, but then I've never been really, really hungry and most people haven't. There are cultures where eating dog meat or rat or whatever, is accepted and there are cultures where it is not. Instead we eat baby calves and lambs and think we're high and mighty. One thing about eating dogs and cats is that they are carnivores so their meat may not be as safe for us to eat as the meat from herbivores.

I have heard of people of religions that are not allowed to eat pork turning down food if it was not allowed in their religion, even if they were very hungry. I have a feeling I wouldn't be like that, because survival is such a basic survival instinct.

I live in a Third World poor country and no one here eats cats or dogs or horse meat. It is disgusting to contemplate eating animals that are pets.

Why is it disgusting to eat homeless, stray animals and not to raise pigs and cows, force them to stand in very crowded pens, and fill them with hormones?

Hunger is such a thing that makes humans not to be conditional. However i would say its better to starve and die rather eating the wrong stuff. We are humans and we should have some kindness as we have heart with us.We are not devils to eat what ever we get. I am a vegetarian.I dont want any animal to be killed for food.Plants do have life .I understand however roots and fruits are god s gift to us arent they. I feel very sorry to hear that because of lack of food and feading the animals ,they are killed. So much are the humans they they became so unkind to the other creatures,oh pity the poor animals . Starving in the street you would like to eat a dog taco, can u eat mud.yes i know people who eat iron , glasses and other nonsense to get into the guiness world book however we are human beings .Let us behave in the way we are to. Food delicious and proteins full can be found in vegetarian ingrediants also.

Eating animals is very natural, I don't think its any more human to avoid eating meat entirely as it is to use resources we have to solve problems.

No eating dogs and cats either in the third countries or in the other world.but you bring up a good question for people who raise the pets to think over.if they don't like their pets to be eaten, they must take good care of them, don't abandon them, don't get them be strayed animals etc, otherwise i think the one who raise the pets are crueler than the one who eat them.this is really a good topic, haha

It has happened before- but I hope only in news that people eat dogs when in extreme hunger. Yes! We eat chicken, and always a special meal in the a certain region in Kenya where I was born and brought up... even you if you pay me a visit then just know chicken is my first priority. But when it comes to dogs, we have them as pets that can be used in hunting and guarding our homesteads, and always treated as such, never have I seen a dog being eaten- I don't wanna see either. You remind me of a certain case in China where two women roasted an alive puppy, the picture is still locked in my head. Damn! That is violation of Animal Rights and eating dogs- Unforgivable sin in our land.

I don't think chickens have any less rights than dogs, they're just not as smart and don't make fun pets, especially because I don't think they can be housetrained.

You have a point but I don't think I could do it. I think about my dog and the thought of eating her makes my stomach turn! Maybe if I didn't know what I was eating but if I knew I could not do it. My brother told me they eat them in Korea, he lived there from the military and he heard the animals yelping as they were killed to be eaten.

I guess that what you are saying makes a lot of sense - yes, there are many hungry people out there and there are also many stray dogs and cats. But there is something in me that just would feel so wrong about eating a dog or a cat. I don't know if its because I am such an animal lover and I love my pets so much, or if its just something that has been ingrained into our minds since we were young, as we are not used to eating dogs. I personally know that i could never bring myself to eat a dog, just because of the way that it makes me feel!

I'm suddenly thinking of Robin Williams in "Good Morning Vietnam" while reading this.. One of his DJ quips from the Movie- "Don't eat in a restaurant located next to a Pound!" (Yipe!) You do raise a valid point on Hunger being a problem in some places worldwide,as well as on pet overpopulation..but finding a solution within those issues may be a bit much of a reach, for many pet owners,anyway.. Homeless people keep pets too..It's sort of a taboo subject, the idea of a pet being considered as food..They're like part of the family. We can distance ourselves somewhat from a farm animal in a field when looking at a meat pack in the supermarket fridge..I've read of Butchers who could do that.. We consider pets to be more intelligent than farm animals, even burying them when they pass away.I dunno..I don't see "Ragout of Lassie" appearing on Menus anytime soon..But then, how would you know if you weren't told?

There was a man I talked with who grew up on a farm. He said the first lesson you got was don't get too attached to the farm animals. Of course, as a child, him and his brothers and sisters didn't listen. They named every animal. It became pretty painful when they had to butcher and eat all their farm animal friends. Animals are part of the food chain. I have no problem with starving people eating dogs and cats especially the animals going to die regardless. Well, with that settled, I made a quick stop at the supermarket. Meat sure is expensive. When I got home, I looked at our dog. Somehow rover didn't look the same. Hmmmm?? dog taco???? Hmmmm??? Don't worry. I could never really do it!!

Dog meat is a delicacy in the northern part of the Philippines. Although it's against the law to eat dog meat, there are still news about dogs being smuggled and would have ended up as dog meat if the smugglers were not caught.

Hi lilbabycat! There is a city in the Philippines who's serving dog dishes. Baguio City, is known to have a colder temp compared to some part of the country, they are eating dog meat there because dog meat has this warm effect afterwards. This maintains the warm temp in the body and improves blood circulation. They cooked it like stew, locally named "caldereta" and its good stuff. I tasted dog meat and it tastes good, it has a strong smell but it could vanish using spices. But i can't imagine eating my pet dog, that is so brutal and cruel. Eating cat? I can't imagine. Ewww...yucky..
