People who do not specify their country

I have seen a few people who do not specify their country. Now I wonder why they do not. I do know that if someone was searching they could find out where they were by their ip address and I am sure that if their country were a dictatorship, the leader could block my lot. So why do they do it? Are they ashamed to let others know or are they on a ship traveling all the time and am hardly home.

Personally I think that perhaps some do because they want to remain anonymous and yes it is not difficult to figure out by the IP, but perhaps they are not aware of that. Since myLot gives the option to display it and or not then I think they probably feel that it is best to for their anonymity. Some do not like personal offline friends and or family to read their every participation. Some members actually enjoy the fact that they can be here and freely be themselves. So I don't think we could know the exact reasoning.

I would think if they do not put their real name on my lot then no one would be aware of who they are. And they do not need to specify a city, but perhaps they could write their country. I mean there are many nicknames that one can use so that no one would be aware of who they are. Perhaps if they come from a very small country, they could at least say that they are from Central Europe, Southern Europe, EAst Asia, or whatever part of the continent they come from. I am sure no one will be the wiser and besides then they can write to others who came from they came from. It would make us feel bette and not wonder if they had something to hide.

Perhaps but a great many members here share a great deal of life happenings in their discussions. Some sign up with some type of actual name, like last names as they do not realize that it will be their usernames. There are many discussions here that many have regrets for using the name they did and have to make a choice of continuing on and or canceling their full account as ID names cannot be changed. I don't hide mine and can't recall a discussion of anyone listing their reasons. This is why I assume it is anonymity. I am not sure it really makes a difference to me if I saw the country or not. I base the members on their participation and activity interests.

It would be a good idea for my lot to put in their guidelines that if you have an uncommon name, to use an alias. I have seen so many people that use their own names and they are not names like Smith or Jones either.

I have no idea why some Lotters are 'unspecified' but I give it no importance at all. That is only their location and not necessarily their place of birth. I have mine as Italy because that is where my home is. Many automatically see 'Italy' and think that I am Italian. Well I am now but I am also English as that is where I was born and lived until I was in my early twenties. Maybe I should leave mine as unspecified too because right now, and since last April, I am not in Italy and except for a chort ten day visit next month, I have no idea yet when I will be returning there permanently again

I think that 'no fixe abode' would be a good idea. I know when we were on our cruise, there were people who worked on the cruise ship and they often were there for months or maybe a couple of years at a time. Then they could be mylotting on the ship, but could not put their country down as they might not be able to get home for some period of time. I also had another thought, there are those who do not want to be friends of those from another country, and so some would put unspecified so that the one who does not want to be friends from those of another country will make them friends. And of course, no one likes unfriend someone. I would want to know what country the person comes from as I feel that if a person puts down unspecified, why is ashamed to put down the place where he was born?

In our profile it states 'location'. That is not necessarily the place where we are born. It certainly isn't in my case as 'location' is where I reside not where I was born.

Unfortunately, some people are prejudiced against certain other countries. It may be that these users have had that experience before and do not want how someone feels about their country to be reflected in their posts. Others think that they are preserving their privacy and being safe that way. They may not realize there are ways to track them down. It is funny, sometimes they give it away in their discussions anyway.

I do know that some use proxy IP addresses. Yes, it is pretty easy to notice a language pattern in people.

The thing is that each country has its own way of talking about things, so for someone who is quite knowledgable they can find out where that person is from by what they call things, and by them mentioning customs and areas, one can find out where these people come from. It is easy to track down, and if they live in a dictatorship, the leader of their country can find out by their ip number so if they complain about the government, they are fooling themselves. Also what if they use an ip from another country? They might get in serious trouble.

It could be just a sense of privacy. I used to be that way and I still don't give up much information. I'm feel I'm taking a big chance listing my town and state, that's how private I am. But it's in the interest of having something in common with others. Maybe the ones who don't list their country are very private people but if they would list it, it would help people understand their attitudes and the way they express themselves.

Unless you lived on a desert Island, there is no need to not specify your country and it would help you and specifically if it were a dictatorshop and you wanted help.

Could they not say, "I do not like what my country is doing?" or "our leader is living in a palace while his people starve?" People do not blame you for your country especially if the country is under a dictatorship..

Maybe they can do that. I hope they can read this so they'll know they have an option.

as a newbie I had a problem with my location, because mylot was automatically selected my country/location as USA, i dont see "select country" in the registration form but maybe mylot detected where someone from by IP and automatically selected the country to the profile. My friend who joined under my referral got her country as "unspecific" I think sometime it is not the member intention to not specify the country, but some of them doesnt know how to change the country on the profile page, dont know how to change avatar or edit profile page. Not all members who is from unspecific country is actually wants to hide their location.

I think what you can do is to write to mylot, go on the contact page and ask how you can do it. What you can do is also to go to profile, the go on account information and then you can change it. So it is easy to do it, and you probably can also change the country if for instance, you moved. So it is easy to do.

I finally know how to edit my profile after I sent msg to Mysd and I know how to change my avatar after I see (stalking) her response to a discussion about avatar. I think admin has a lot of jobs and by stalking Mysd I can find more information about mylot. Greeting Mysd, ah now you know im your stalker.

The thing is that they have to be careful of the subject, like not mentioning a city, the food they ate, so their conversation would be very limited.

Yet they seem to use them. My brother is paranoid about computers and the internet, and he does not own a computer and does not want to have anything to do with it, even though I have tried to tell him that there is no harm.

I have seen this alot also. I think alot of people just do not want other people to knew they are from a country that is not quite commonly accepted in America.

I am proud to tell the world where I come from. I have seen many profiles not specifying their origins and I think they prefer to be stateless so they can use mylot as their political wagon to hammer their country's leadership without causing any embarrassment to their own countrymen in mylot. What ever the reasons behind their exclusion is for them to explain to satisfy our curiosity.

Well I am Canadian and I am proud to say that. And even if we were taken over by an evil man, I still would say that I am Canadian. So even if you have a bad government, would it not be all right to say where you came from so in case you needed help, someone here would give you a link to the url that tells you what to do.

hi suspenseful. like what the others had mentioned, its most likely that the mylotters who didn't state their country forgot to fill in that information. aside from that, i couldn't think of any other reason except that they really don't like sharing personal information and as such they didn't include their country. some wild assumption is, these mylotters who didn't have a stated country are actually aliens from another planet or galaxy hence the country field in the sign-up doesn't apply to them. i know... craaaaaazzzzzzyyyyyy!!!

Maybe they just don't settle for one specific location as what you have said, maybe movable like in a ship or something. But definitely it has something to do with their security and they don't want others to know. It can also be a reason for ignoramus, well not filling in the blanks you know, does not even mind what is there, so don't worry, it does not affect you here even when others don't put where they are from..what planet!

I have been on a cruise ship as a passenger and we have many people there who work in the crew, most from the Phillipines and some from parts of AFrica , Bermuda, etc. They still are members of their country and say that they are Fillipinos, etc. So that is still no excuse.

I think they have the right to expose their country or not and you can easily check the option where it is optional in mylot which means mylot also know the rights of their users. Second, most of the new members fill the form with excitement in which they forget so many things to check or enable, so it is not a big deal. But when they get some experience while working online, they love to share their complete identity because it help in their original life too when they show their work to those who want people like them I means on job it also help as a reference.

It has to be the country that you are a citizen of. Unless one is born on the cruiser, and lived there all his life, there should not be a problem. And then he would be considered a citizen of the country where the ship is registered on.

When I get a friends request and the profile does not show either age, gender or country I immediately deny their request. I am not interested in befriending anyone who has so much to hide or is ashamed of their background.

i wonder that also and some also never state if they are male or female. which makes it very hard to figure out what to reply at times. and if i were gay id also specify that so as people to know some answers in replying. the more you know about your friends here the easier it is to participate with them.

I prefer the terms male or female. I can find out if a person is homosexual or lesbian by their interests. Do not like the term gay is it prefers that those of us who are not are miserable grouches. There are couple here that KI am unsure of and find that it makes it hard to get into more detail when responding to their posts. Think of what I wold go through if Ihad to reply to unspecified and I may say something bad about the dictator ruling his country. That would cause a problem.

Hi, You have made a very valid point.I have noticed this too among many users when I visited their profiles.I see no reason not to specify my country.I am proud of being an Indian and I like everyone who visits my profile to know where I am from.I cannot decipher the reason behind hiding or choosing not to display one's country name.It is of course a matter of personal choice but still I feel it is nice to display your country name on a global community like this.

Frankly, I do not know why some people do not even specify MYLOT of their status. I am an Italian example and maybe I could also specify that my city is Genoa. However, also applies a privacy law that lets you hide some data.

I would not let anyone know the street that I am on or my phone number. I could specifiy the area of the city I live on and I have been trying to get people in my city and area who are mylotters here to be my friend so we can talk about similar subjects such as winter is coming early, etc.
