I Need Help Finding A Shampoo

United States

So I'm growing my hair out, and right now it's about 3 or 4 inches past my shoulders. And of course, the longer it gets the more tangley it gets after showers. It can be quite painful to brush out my hair because of the tangles. I don't want to cut my hair, I want to grow it out. So I'm wondering if anyone knows of any shampoos that will help with this problem. Do you guys use shampoos that are good for getting rid of tangles? Thanks!!

I've always had long hair and it naturally curly so tangles very easily. I use VO5 for split ends. I use the shampoo and conditioner. I can not use the ones that are both in one. The conditioner does not work. But if you have split ends this one will repair them and keeps you from getting them too. My hair is baby fine too. I hope you find what works for you. Also they have detanglers you can get. I have heard too that putting virgin olive oil in a bottle of water that it helps with making hair shiny and healthy. I have yet to try it but I have heard the guys on tv talk about it that are well known hair dressers. They use it on models and actresses.

You are so welcome. My hair is baby fine but it was very very thick before it all fell out a few years back. Now it is thin but I have used the same shampoo and conditioner for many years. I use to have split ends and that's why I tried these and they work.

Oh, you only use the oil treatment once a week or a month if you want to use it. and you don't have to put it close to the roots or scalp.

I will look up the VO5 shampoos and conditioners, I have thick hair so hopefully they would work for me too. But I do get split ends, so I am really looking forward to getting something that can help me with that! I'm not sure I'm going to try that olive oil thing...I don't think it would be a good match for my oil prone hair lol. Thank you moon!

I use Aussie products. I don't think its much the shampoo, but finding a good conditioner. The conditioner makes it easier to comb through. I have long hair that's very thick, if I don't use conditioner I can't get a brush of even a wide tooth comb through it. Its nit the cheapest on the market but it isn't the mist expensive either. I have gone through many different brands, and found this one after either my other brand was discontinued or the store I shop at stopped stocking it. It gets very expensive trying to find something that works. Good luck.

Yeah I did read that conditioner will help, but my problem with that is I get very oily hair, so I can't use conditioner all the time. I'm hoping to find a shampoo tha may help like a conditioner would,,,but if I can't I may have to figure out how I can use conditioner and control the oil. Thank you! I'll look into the Aussie products.

I would look for a shampoo and conditioner that specifically is for oily hair. Mine is dry so I look for ones that have a moisturizer in them to try and hydrate the hair. You shouldn't have to much trouble finding one, mist brands have muriple options for all types of hair.

beanie - exactly! You need to use a good conditioner. The shampoo alone won't detangle your hair. Using a wide tooth comb to comb through the conditioner in the shower helps a lot. I love Aussie's 3 Minute Miracle. Have you tried Tresseme before. I like that brand also.

I hate to say it, but I don't think finding a new shampoo will make a difference. Using a conditioner should help some, however, the best way to get rid of tangles is to start at the bottom when brushing your hair. I've learned this through personal experience, so I know that it works, even with really long hair. By the way, I've read somewhere online not to pile your hair on your head when washing it as that's just asking for knots. So if you do this you may just want to stop. And just for the record, I use Suave, although I have used more expensive shampoos in the past. Either way, I've never had problems with tangles when washing my hair. I hope this helps. Happy mylotting!

Conditioner is a must, especially for long hair, as well as getting regular trims to avoid split ends. Another suggestion I have is to make sure you either use a wide tooth comb or a good brush, and only comb through it when it's wet. The knots get worse when someone takes a bad bristle brush to dry tangled hair - I rarely brush my daughter's hair when it's dry unless she's going to get in the shower anyway because it turns into a frizz mop if it was tangled to begin with, or if she goes more than a day without washing it.

Wen does well. But it's expenstive. Preoiling or preconditioning before you shampoo sometimes works, too.

I find it's way too oily for me. Maybe the cheaper version isn't so oily. Wonder if this other version is all natural. Thanks and take care.

Sally Beauty Supply sells a cheaper version that works just as well as Wen. I forget what it's called but you can ask the ladies that work there. They sell a ton of it.

Hi Lily, I'm not sure if it's available in the US but I use Palmolive Naturals shampoo, the one with Coco Milk Cream & Pure Milk Cream. I've always been using Palmolive Naturals and I never have problems with it. Also, I noticed that my hair is more attuned to hair products that have coconut extracts. Conditioner also helps. But since you have oily hair, apply the conditioner only at the tips. Don't apply it on the crown of your head where the roots of your hair are and where it's more oily. That's what I learned from watching beauty gurus from YouTube --- apply shampoo only at the crown of your head (roots of your hair), and apply conditioner only at the tips of your hair because it is where the hair is oldest and drier than the ones at the crown. Then, when you comb out your hair, use a wide toothed comb and always start at the tips working your way up. That's what I always do and I never get problems with tangles. Hope it helps!

Thank you for all the details veronizm! I'll have to see if I can find a comb somewhere in the house, I've always used a brush lol. So if I apply the conditioner to the tips, will that still help with the tangles? I haven't been paying attention to if I have the most trouble brushing at the tips or the roots lol. I guess I should do that. I'll try to see if the Palmolive Naturals is available here. Thank you!

Lily, veronizm, said exactly what I would say. Plus I am sure if you research you will find a good conditioner that is meant for oily hair..

You're welcome! But wait, I think I wasn't too specific about the conditioner. Apply it from the base of your neck down to the tips of your hair, not only at the very tips but start from the base of your neck. It should help with the tangles on that part of your hair. Always use a wide toothed comb when brushing wet hair because hair is at its most fragile when it's wet

I have really thick hair and I know what you mean. I usually try to use something that has extra conditioning in it. Or I'll use a conditioning hair masque once a week. The extra conditioning will leave the hair stronger and much softer so it doesn't get tangled so easy. I think it was Aussie. Hope that helps .

I love all the Aussie products. I use the mousse, the spritzer, the shampoo, conditioner and the hairspray, depending on how I want my hair to look. I loved the commercials.

I always use a shampoo and then a conditioner. The conditioner makes my hair soft and silky. As I follow on, I brush my hair each morning and night - at least. I brush it hard because I have very thick hair that can be dry, so brushing hard stimulates my scalp and keeps the tangles at bah. My hair is as long as yours and past my waist at the back. It'ss naturally curly too. I use Pantene shampoo and conditioner and IO have been using this brand for about 10 years.

I'd use a good conditioner and a detangling spray after washing, regardless of the brand of shampoo. What type of hair do you have, fine or coarse, thick or thin, curly or straight? I have fine highlighted hair with no volume, and it's long, so I use a color care shampoo and a volume conditioner. My daughter has fine curlyish long hair that tangles so I use volume shampoo and conditioner for her and extra detangler after I towel dry her hair. I like herbal essences brand, and citre shine and aussie are also good options. If you want a cheaper line, most of the Suave Professionals are pretty good, I just like the scents of the others better. Leave-in spray conditioners are another option to detanglers, and probably improve the condition of your hair so you get less tangles eventually.

You need to use a really good conditioner on your hair. Put it on your hair after you shampoo then while in the shower use a wide tooth comb and comb the conditioner through. Then rinse out. I have long hair too and I could never get by with just using shampoo alone. I really love Tresemme shampoos and conditioners. Also Aussie makes a great 3 minute conditioner. Hope this helps.

Hey Lily! It's been a long time since I've visited mylot! How are you? As for your question, I'd like to recommend a specific brand because I really like them both. One is St. Ives because it's milder but can still give the desired effect that you'd like and the other is L'Oreal Elseve Smooth Intense. It made my hair soft and easy to brush. And if you're planning to grow your hair long, start using conditioner because that's really essential to make it manageable.

Shampoo is not enough to prevent your hair from getting tangled. You need conditioner to help prevent from the hair from tangles. The result will be you will have a very soft and manageable hair afterwards. I hope I have helped. You can also share this concern on www.lifo.com due to girls in that site can share their tips and views on beauty and fashion. Good luck.

Try to use egg and lemon. These can make your hair grow faster. They also serve as a conditioner. You will surely have a shiny hair. I used these once a week because I have oily hair. It's very effective.

Aussie Shampoo is really good..but i would suggest you to not brush your hair after showers because it can split your hair and when you brush it when its dry don't start from the top start from the bottom and slowly so you don't damage it;)

You can use a detangling spray also. I use Suave shampoo and conditioner. It works very well for my hair and it is inexpensive.

Have you tried Pert? or just using a conditioner after shampooing? I brush mine out and then put it up right away to keep it from tangling...

There are plenty on the market but I can't think of any offhand right now. There is a detangler that you can buy, it's usually on the top shelf at walmart in the aisle with the shampoos and hair sprays, near the hairsprays, or I think there might be some above the hair dye. In any case, it works good. Just shampoo you're hair as normal, maybe using a little extra conditioner can help as well. Or you could get the leave in shampoo and conditioner, the stuff that just kind of dries on your scalp if you're in a rush, I don't think it makes any difference as to how hard it is to brush you're hair etc. Also, take a hairbrush into the shower with you and before you get out of the shower, while you're hair is still wet brush it. Towel it dry gently and then brush it again.

hello mam..... i think instead of using any shampoo which can cause cancer.....as it contains sodium laureth....which acts as slow poison to body..... u can use any hair oil...... i would prefer entik oil which can regain the lost hairs... and if u want any shampoo only i think u must go with head and shoulders..... after all its up to u.......

I think you should definitely look into getting one of the detangling sprays. I used to use Infusium 23, it's a leave in conditioner, but it never left my hair greasy.
