I am watching a documentary about cults on The History Channel. Warren Jeffs and Jim Jones are being profiled. What is your opinion of cults? How do you feel about cults? Do cults exist in society today? What are some examples of modern day cults? Please share your thoughts.

Yes cults still exist. Any affiliation that dominates your life in a negative way is a type of cult. I belonged to one that didn't allow women and girls to wear pants or short sleeve blouses. We couldn't cut our hair and couldn't even braid our hair. My daughter was thrown out of school there because I got her hair cut. My husband was threatened with excommunication for not shaving his face before picking up my daughter from school. I was so glad to get out of that cult. We couldn't wear jewelry. I couldn't wear my wedding rings. Couldn't have a radio or anything. The preacher would send people to check on us too and tattle if they saw us hiding anything. We had a radio tucked in a drawer. One night we were listening to music on the radio when one of their spies came. No church should run your life like that.

What She Said! The thing is that even some big religious groups can be controlling and would come out as Cults but because they are so big and have money a lot of people won't recognise what they are like. It's not just religions either, some political groups and "causes" can be Cults as well as some businesses. I'm glad you got out of there PQ any religious group that bullies it's members like that doesn't deserve any!

Well by definition a cult is a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc. So I would say yes we have tons of cults in modern society. It is also said to be a particular system of religious worship, especially with reference to its rites and ceremonies. These two definitions are what make up groups of people all over the world. But I think the cults you mean are the bad ones. The ones that put down and attack other people for not believing what they do. Those are the kind that get all of the attention right. I think belonging to a group of people who believe or like the same things as you do is no problem. As long as it's hurting no one else or forcing anyone else into it.

I just watched one on Ancient Aliens about Cults. Very interesting. I think they are very sad. People that are so unhappy with their religion and their life that they join something that is built on lies. They just put one cultist in jail. It is amazing what some will believe!

Hi celtic, I too, think cults are sad, because they are based on lies, control and manipulation.

And people are starved for something to believe in and a family unit.

There are certainly cults in society today. When most people use the word "cult", they are talking about groups that harm the member in some way.. then again, even using this definition, I would still consider religion to fall under this category. Indoctrination and brain-washing are synonyms. I would certainly count those men as cult members. I think that it's probably a lot easier to unknowingly fall into a cult than people realize. Humans, by nature, are very social creatures, and as such, we automatically pick up on other people's behaviors and try to adhere to social norms. Everyone conforms to some degree, whether they'd like to admit it or not. There are specific rules and traditions, customs, etc. It is just a society within a society.

Dear sketch, Thank you for the thought provoking response. I also think that some organizations that we don't ever consider may qualify as cults according to the definition of cult that you use.

I watched a Dr Phil episode not too long ago that dealt with people who escaped from cult like situations. These so called groups apparently do exist and the vulnerable are usually targeted to join, be brainwashed and to distance themselves from their families outside the cult. It was quite shocking. One particular leader was married to a dozen girls some as young as twelve. They are dangerous and it is the young and vulnerable who are most at risk.

Hi Paula, I watched that episode. I agree with you completely. There is only so much the government can do, but children must be protected.

I think cults are very dangerous things and should be watched and regulated by Governments, I think they are given too much freedom but then I am not sure if they are classed as a religion or not as it is my opinion that even Churces should be taxed and be classed as a business and checked on to where all the money they collect goes..a friend of mine recently was told to have the church bells rung for her wedding it would cost an extra $500, they all should be taxed and checked.

Hey lilac, Thanks for your response. $500 for ringing church bells at a wedding? Wow, that is terrible. Talk about highway robbery.

Hi MandaLee, I guess it all depends on your definition of the word cult. If you take the definition literally, all world religions including the the whole of Christianity, would be considered a cult. Blessings.

Cults are dangerous, pure and simple. They prey upon the most vulnerable of people and are often associated with violence. A modern day example of a cult is the KKK. Found in largely southern United States, the KKK targets black people for acts of violence. Street and prison gangs bear similarities to cults in their functions. I think we as a society should take a zero tolerance stand towards cults and discourage their formations. This begins with understanding and awareness.

Dear Granite, Yes, cults sure are dangerous. I could not agree with you more. I, too, think we need a zero tolerance policy against cults and other types of organizations that are known to utilize control and manipulation toward their members.

Yes there are still cults all over. My issue with cults is that the leaders try to pass themselves off as God or Jesus in some of them. I also know that it is wrong when they take whatever woman as their wife, and then he may also take his wife's daughter, a teenager, as his wife and have children. Of course, this is all wrong. There is a cult church in the small city where my mom lives. What they do there is they don't allow you to bring visitors. There are only so many cars allowed there. The members don't tithe which means 10%, they give all their money to the church. If they are invited to go shopping, they are not allowed to go if the pastor of the church doesn't tell them they can.

I don't believe in cults, but I do however believe that they do exist within our society. I don't know what type of cults actually exist and what they consist of, but I do believe that there are cults out there.

What I think about cults, I think they are way of controlling weaker people in the world. You get someone that is wanting power of others and controlling and having the say of everything not only in there life but in others. They want followers to do bad things. I don't know any cults that are good, all of them are bad like killing other people, rapping, and so on. Manson is a great example of a pure killer and controller that could get people to do as he wanted down to them all killing themselves. I think there are some cults in today's society. I can name any what are in the past few years that I'm aware of but there are out there. There is always one out there. I do know there are still meetings of the KKK in certain southern states to me that is a form of a cult. KKK has reformed in many different way now then it was back in the day.
