Right now I'm thinking of buying another computer. my laptop is old and its not reliable anymore. And I'm thinking which is better to buy laptop or desktop? Right now price of laptop is not that high anymore. I know desktop is much cheaper but in term of space, weight and even the electrical consumption. I think its much better if I going to buy another laptop than buying a desktop right?

I do agree. that's why I have laptop right now. But since I have problem with batteries and I have hard time upgrading my laptop. Unlike desktop. But overall what I hate most right now. Is when I realize that I paid 1,200 dollars 5 years ago. Now I can buy laptop twice as fast and half the price. Just imagine if I keep my 1,200 dollars and just invest it or something and wait. Now I can buy 600 worth of laptop twice the speed and even thrice the RAM and Hardisk.. grrrrr.

I also think laptops are better than desktops as they can be carried around and consume less electricity. Also you can carry to places you visit.

Well, after 2 weeks, you might have read some good comments and my comment is probably not too much different than any. In general, laptop is not necessarily better than desktop. Yes, you can bring laptop anywhere with you. It all depends on your computing needs. Do you write a lot? Do you play games? Do you watch movies? Those are some questions to consider. Some people are hardcore gamers, while some play every now and then. It also comes down to your spending capacity as well. You could purchase both if you have the spending power.

We are talking about price of laptop and desktop and its advantages. your reasoning can apply to both laptop and desktop so I really don't understand your point. I mean okay lets say I like games. theirs also laptop that has high videocards and even stronger than its desktop counterpart. same thing in video etc. So its pointless also to talk about budget because budget in here is not the issue if you read again my post.

Since this thread is old already. I already bought laptop. Right now prefer to use laptop. Although I'm not really mobile. It just that its eat less space and I can move my laptop with ease. Unlike if I buy desktop that it eats lots of electricity and also eat up lots of space.

If you primarily just use it to access the internet, a laptop is the best way to go. A desktop has it's advantages for certain things and I have one but the computer I use most of the time is my laptop. It's just a lot more convenient and easy to use anywhere I want. Plus, laptops nowadays have more than enough power and speed for most applications and at very reasonable prices. I think in the not to distant future, desktop computers will wane in popularity as people increase their usage of laptops and other mobile devices such as smart phones, Ipads and Android tablets. For the average computer user, a laptop will be all the computer they need.

That's true. almost all laptops now has the same capacity as desktop and the best part is that its less bulky. One thing I like about laptop is that I can store it in any place I want and I can bring it to any place I want. Unlike if you have desktop that its takes lots of weight and space.

I personally prefer laptop than PC because its taking less space and I can bring it anywhere I want to. What I don't like about laptop is their self life, my last laptop last only 3 years but my old PC still running. When its come to give service to your laptop when it not running its usually more costly than PC.

I already bought new laptop. Finally after few months of thinking I finally bought one and I'm disappointed. lols. The reason is that when I bought it I thought the screen is big. But when I return home and compare my laptop screen size to my old one its small.

I think it is better to buy a laptop than buying a desktop. The price of a laptop is much increased now and the Christmas days are coming now and you will have some special discounts for this Christmas. SO I think you can buy a laptop in this Christmas season itself.

I just bought laptop four days ago. I'm little disappointed though. Although I bought a 4G RAM 500G harddrive. compare to my 1GRAM 80G old laptop. My old laptop is still more powerful than my new laptop. For two reason. One my old laptop when I buy it its cost me 60,000 pesos. my new laptop only 27,000 pesos and since I pay installment creditcard its cost me 32,000 pesos. while my old laptop I pay cash for it. second since my old laptop run using XP its faster than my new laptop that run window 7 and window 7 really eats up my ram also. so what the use of having 4G ram.

I have had both but I can say that my next computer is going to be a laptop again. Just for the fact that you can use it and be comfortable sitting on your couch or in bed, but you can take it with you wherever you go. I have taken my laptop with me when I go on a road trip so that I can have internet access when I stay at a hotel overnight. Then I can do some myLotting or check email, etc. So, I would say it makes more sense to get a laptop versus a regular desk top computer; at least in my personal situation. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

Thanks. Yeah. it does make sense. And its already proven that laptop is much much much much much more good to buy than to desktop. The reason why I say much multiple times because theirs so many replies and I'm thankful for that and most of them if not all chooses laptop also.

It depends on what you're going to use it for. If you're into gaming, then you'll need a lot of memory. If you just use your laptop for surfing and stuff like that, and you like to be able to take your computer with you, then get another laptop. I'm going to get another desktop because my current memory isn't enough, I need at least eight gigs of memory for the game I like to play, The Sims 3.

I check the story a week ago. But you will be surprise the memory of Laptop is the same as desktop now. Its only the processor speed that they can't much until now. But every thing from RAM to harddisk the specs are almost the same as desktop. And some laptop videocard are not even fixed to motherboard anymore. That means you can even upgrade your video card.

I like my laptop because I am able to move to any room in the house with my computer, but, I am normally more productive when I have a desktop. It is a big change for me not to have a desktop to use when I really need to focus on the computer, but I am getting more used to it. I think that economically, a laptop is the better choice because it uses a lot less enrgy. The fact that it takes up very little space is nice too. You can simply put it away when you aren't using it and it doesn't have to sit their, out in the open. Yes, I think that between price, portability, and ease of use, a laptop is probably the better choice.

Thanks, I also think that way. Right now I only have one question that I need to understand. Can I ran my laptop without battery. I'm planning to remove my battery so that I can preserve my battery. Since I'm online for 15 hours a day. So for me its going to affect my laptop battery life.

It really depends on your line of work. If you travel a lot, or you rather go out and work your projects or you have to done your work at library, the best option is have something mobile, like your laptop. For me, I done my work mostly at home, so I have desktop, although I have laptop computer myself too, I keep both balance. Budget is your primary consideration, so, make it your best option.

I'm only at home. But I have a tight space. So I like laptop. The only reason I want to by desktop is because of the price. But then I realized that the price of laptop and desktop is almost the same. And if you check the monitor in desktop is also flat. So in short desktop is getting smaller also. But my main concern right now is the CPU its still huge in desktop. If they can make it smaller then maybe I will going to buy desktop.

I have a netbook. And I have the optional CD/DVD player. I had a regular laptop but gave it to my son so now I got a 10 inch dell netbook. I like it cause you are limited as to the tablets and it folds like a regular laptop so I don't have to worry about my computer getting scratched carrying it around. I would say I spend 75 percent of my computer time on my net book. When I am working on Ebay I then use the desk top as it has the printer attached to it. I guess its really what you plan to do with the computer. If you want to work on it some companies won't let you work on a laptop. If its just for fun mostly then I say a laptop. I like that its portable and if I go out to a cafe, I can use free wifi to do things on my laptop. Have a nice day and Happy Mylotting!

I just bought new laptop and I'm frustrated when I return home. The reason is simple. the screen is small. My old laptop has about 15 inch screen and my new laptop has only 11 inches. So I feel like I'm down sizing. I know its going to take five to ten years again before I can buy new laptop. So I'm hoping that this one I'm going to sell at good price and buy bigger screen laptop. what a mistake on my part.

Hello Bulastika, I bought desktop few months ago but i repent for it that why i did not buy a laptop because laptop is more handy and you can carry it to anywhere you go unlike desktop for which you have to sit at one place. Moreover it has covered lot of space in my house. I would suggest you to buy a laptop as there is not much difference in the prices these days.

For me, I suggest you just buy a laptop. Nowadays, the price of an Intel i7 laptop is almost the same as that of an Intel i7 desktop. The only reason today for buying a desktop is that, you can upgrade most of its hardware, unlike a laptop.

Although I wish that I can chance my ROM. but Even if I chance my ROM I think the spend can't be handle by my processor anymore as its only .7GHZ

There are certain things you need to consider... First of all,I think that would depend on how will you be using the computer. If you are not a gamer and likes to just browse the Internet and just typed in some documents and stuff a laptop would be handy. However, if are a power user, a gamer and a techie guy that likes to upgrade and do some stuff such is upgrading and adding some hardware on the tower I would recommend a desktop or this type of user usually goes for a desktop. Second thing is the budget, although I guess there are brand of laptops that would almost the same price and speed compared to a desktop, because before the reason I bought my first desktop is the budget, since I know the in and out of a computer and I know I can get a better deal with a desktop rather than a laptop. But it would still be your choice there are advantages and disadvantages in buying a desktop or a laptop. A desktop has no mobility compared to a laptop, but a laptop cannot be upgraded and customized compared to desktop. I am sure you would agree on that, correct?

I'm not really a gaming type of person. But since I watch movie from time to time. I also need some average to good videocard. But over all the reason why I like laptop is that its compact and I can store it any time I want. Unlike the big desktop that really its space.

I have to admit I Am from the old school so to say...but I have to admit I would love to have a lap top...and I Am considering one...but at the same time I love my PC. I have a place where I can come and sit do my work and not be disturbed by any one! I guess every thing changes and we should change accordingly.

It depends on your usage. If it's just surfing, business and small games, then a laptop is advisable. But if you plan to play many big (games which require big specs) games, install programs for business which also requires bigger capacity storage, I think the desktop will be the best option.

I'm not a game type. Just forex trading, stocks trading and some kind of online business. But not good in games except maybe playing poker from time to time. Yeah. that's the good advantage of desktop. Also I like desktop for free slots to upgrade. but right now theirs some laptop that is already game oriented.

Contrary to your opinion, the desktop is getting MORE expensive because they are being phased out. I personally love my desktop over my laptop and when my desktop crashed, I went to a reliable source to purchase a reworked desktop. It cost very little and works like a charm. This will be my place to buy desktops as long as possible. If you like new only, go for the laptop. The prices are dropping. Good luck.

20 Mar 12
Nope, they are definitely getting more expensive. That's not just my opinion, but the opinion of my son who works on these for a living. My last new computer, complete with screen and keyboard cost $199. There is nothing for that price available. Even the reworked one ran $268. They do not want people buying them and raising the price is one way to phase them out painlessly.

First its not my opinion. Go to electronic stores and check the price list. Its not my opinion and that's a fact. second. As you say its being phased out. So commonsense dictates. why will something that is going to phase out going to be more expensive? desktop is not a jewelry or collector items. desktop is a gadget, a computer. And what is in is hot what is not is out.

Of course, the laptop will be more convenient which can be carried along. About the maintenance cost, the laptop will be more expensive than the desktop. Only certain model of the battery, charger, keypad and so on can be used for certain brand and model of the laptop. As such, the cost of the maintenance will be higher by comparing to desktop. Due to the need in my daily life, I shall select the laptop because it can be carried along easily when I am traveling.

Yeah its cost a lot for maintenance. but my laptop has never bee repaired in the last five years. So maintenance wise. I still don't spend a dime in my old laptop. Although right now my laptop is dying out. I don't have plan to make repairs. I rather buy new one than spend anything for its repair. That's my strategy with my laptop right now.

I just purchase a new laptop but I still spend some money in repair shop to fix my laptop. although its not totally fix and I feel rob by spending 1000 pesos in just reformat my harddisk and chance my bios battery but even they do that my laptop still don't improve. But still I'm using my old laptop in safe mode. lols. And my new laptop I still don't install O.S. yet. lols.

Good to know that your laptop can last for 5 years. I shall expect my 11 months old laptop can also be the same too. About repairing a 5 years old laptop, I do not think it is wise to do so. It is better to spend a bit more to purchase a totally new laptop. About the desktop, I do have a new. But most of the times, it was fully occupied by my children and it was very hard for me to use it. May be, I shall get another one with a 20 inches monitor because at my age, I need a larger screen to view the contents easily. ha! ha! We shall have both to meet our needs.

Hello there! Buying desktop or laptop depends on your usage. Buy yourself another laptop if you need to bring it with you always. Nut if I were to be ask, I would still prefer desktop. Well, this is because I had an experience with laptop recently. Our laptop's videocard had some problem and he told us that we need to buy the whole motherboard. I think laptop are non repairable per part unlike the desktop that you can buy the parts piece by piece.
@bulastika (5966)

11 Dec 11
Yeah. videocard is attached to motherboard itself. I think if you bought laptop you check warranty. Anyway if you have problem with your videocard its either you going to buy a new laptop or buy new motherboard with videocard. And since the price of motherboard is almost as if your buying a new laptop I guess you have no choice but to buy new one instead.

Desktop is good if you have space and of course if your a heavy user and love to upgrade also. Me I prefer to have laptop for now. I have small room and I don't have enough space for desktop. But I'm hoping that if I can save enough money I will going to buy a big house and maybe at that time I'm going to be rich.

Well it depend on the specifications you want and the price you can afford. As we know that the better the specifications are the the more expensive it gets. A high specs computer would be cheaper in price than a high specs laptop, with same price we can get a better specs computer than a laptop. But we can't bring our computer to anywhere as easily as laptop. So i guess if you dont really need a high specs computer or you want high specs and you can afford it then i suggest buy laptop. But if you want a high specs computer with low price then it is better to choose computer.

If you read my thread. You will know what specs I need. I don't have problem with specification and the price. Since if we talk about specifications then the price in laptop and desktop is difference. But do you know how much is the difference? that's why I open this thread. To ask if the price difference and the advantage of having a laptop or desktop is worth it to buy laptop or desktop. Price and specifications is already given and noted. Its the weigh that I want to know.
