Finally a class worth taking, Teen living.

This weekend was amusing. My daughter has been taking a class called teen living & this weekend she got to bring in an electronic computer controlled doll. It cried, required feeding, changing, burping, rocking, etc. By the second night with little sleep she was looking pretty rough. It wasn't as bad as a real baby but it was bad enough to have her screaming " Your going to kill me!" & about crying herself. It definitly got the point across, babies aren't just cute, they're a lot of work. It'll be a long time before she wants one now. In my opinion this class is probably the best thing they offer in schools now. They could still use a course in internet safety , relationships & predator prevention but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I remember those dolls from when we were in high school. Back then the school only had a few dolls, and they kept them for those students they considered high risk to get pregnant, given their behavior (in other words I was too nerdy to get one lol) I know it must have been great fun to see your daughter learning in such a way, and I hope you didn't miss the opportunity to relate this back to the "boyfriend" situation lol.

I think it is a better idea than what I had to do for high school health which was to carry an egg around. The doll is great because it shows young people that having kids when they are children themselves is not a wise idea. I met my husband online and even though he was safe, I think that there are some people out there who are not safe.

How is carrying an egg around practice for parenthood? You could just leave it in the refrigerator at night & ignore it. The flour bag children they used back when I was in school were equally ineffective. The only thing the kids had to worry about was their child getting stolen & made into cookies prematurely. I brought up the internet safely part because of some things I saw on another forum like the girl asking " I'm 16, should I invite the 24 yr old guy I've been chatting with online for the last couple days over for some alone time?". Seriously... inviting someone you barely know who could easly forge their information over for alone time at your first meeting is plain stupid. He could be a 42 yr old pedophile fresh out of prison. Sad thing is that example or at least things similar to it are kind of common...

That's a really great idea! A lot of girls get pregnant to have someone to love them then find out that the love comes only after years of really hard work. My son's roommates had a baby last December and that did it for him! He swears he wants to be sterilized and never go through that. It's a good idea for young people, especially as young as high school or earlier, get a realistic idea of the huge responsibility a child can be. Heck, I remember pacing the room at 3AM crying along with my baby, asking him why he hated me so much! He's a wonderful young man now but those first couple of years were exhausting. Between the two kids I don't think I got more than 2 hours sleep at a time for nearly 4 years!

Yea, just when you finally get them calmed down, fed & changed to where they'll fall back asleep, you get everything cleaned up & start winding down to where you can sleep yourself they wake up again...Your stuck grabbing cat naps. Even worse is when your doing that while trying to hold down a job. Now when my daughter sees a baby instead of "Aww how cute" she's probably going to scream & run for the door, which is fine by me as I have no desire to be a grandpaw...ever.

hi uath13 I agree that they could make this great idea this doll baby even more realistis. I like your suggestions about a stinky sustance to pretend its urine. But it sounds like the idea is working and your daughter will wait til she is more mature before the first'great adventure.I remember now and laugh when my first born was a baby I laid him on the sofa with a pillow in front of him. He had not read the book about when babies are supposed to turn over and all that . He proceeded to roll over and off the sofa but onto the pillow. lol I called my doctor "My infant son just rolled off' the sofa, oh my do you think I should bring him in. " The doctor then asked me if the baby was crying and how far was the edge of the sofa from the floor. I then admitted he had rolled off onto a pillow.I can still hear him laughing at me. no your son will be fine Mrs. Hatley just cuddle him a bit is all." I wanted to cry as I felt so stupid and foolish. I was 33 with my first born and older than most. to call about something so silly.but he need not have laughed.lol lol

Well I can't really blame him for laughing. You were probably hysterical.

It wasn't as bad as a real baby but it was bad enough to have her screaming " Your going to kill me!" It should be worst in my opinion : a low birthrate is a good policy against crisis and unemployment. No more babies = no more young people unemployed in 20 years. And seriously... your discussion made me laugh. I agree that this doll is not a bad idea at all.

If I were designing it I'd have made it squirm, Fuss whenever there was a loud noise, & squirt liquid a$$ ( a spray that stinks horribly ) into the diaper when it's time for a change so they can get closer to the real experience.

It is difficult to understand why people are not so wise than Chinese and are not stopping the experience after the first baby.

Maybe if you had been brave enough to have a first baby, then you would realize why people choose to go through this experience more than once.
