What kind of art do you like?

There are a million kinds of art out there. Impressionism, realism, surrealism, etc. I went to an art museum in a nearby city and had to choose a painting to write a paper about. I had a great time looking at everything. I really liked the regional pieces too. There were so many things and perspectives. I am also fond of the older pieces that I have been studying too. I'll tell you what..that Salvador Dali is something else. I think I would call him abstract. Of course painting is by no means the only form of art, so if you like something better, share it with us. Statues, mosaics, statues..amazing. So what kind of art do you like? Any favorite artists? Do you do any type of art..if so..I would love to hear about that too.

Hi Jen. Oh dear! That sounds quite difficult... which one to choose? Better you than me in this case! If it were left up to me, I'd still be looking! How long was the paper you had to write on it? I did fairly well in art classes at high school, but I spent so much time on art homework that everything else suffered, so I had to drop that subject. I'm no expert on art, but I know what I like & I like what I see. The art I do these days is in a very practical & work related form - electronic circuit design. I design & build my own printed circuit boards - a tedious process that can take me months at a time. Actually - I reckon you would have seen... uh... I don't know what it's called, but like, say a picture is taken of a city at night, for example. It gets stuck on a board - the usual treatment with a nice wooden frame & everything, but this one has lights - maybe hundreds of 'em! Each of them blinking on & off, some flickering, some permenently on... it's so real & so life-like, like you're seeing the whole thing in real life! The phasing & the relative intensities & the busy-ness of it... one can stand there for hours with their mouth hanging open & not be aware of how much time has gone by! It's all micro-processor controlled, of course, but that's something I would like to have the time to do. If I hung a few of them up on the walls at home, I could sell the house instantly for far more than it's worth.

That sounds amazing! I bet you would sell that house for more than it's worth. Those circuit boards can be quite a job. Just remember E/IxR... Series parallel can get a little cranky though. I repaired circuit boards and you have to be super careful with the soldering. I always liked to have a heat sink even if I knew I wouldn't need it...it made me feel better anyway. Tedious is an understatement. I think you are on to something with your idea. There is a guy at work that is making digital photo frames from old laptops for people now and I think he does well at that too. Oh...my paper is only a page..I just have to write about the artist and technique to show I have the vocabulary down

Yes..I was but life took me into a different direction. I started out with my certification where I work troubleshooting an ASRS...automated storage and retrieval system. The HR/vice president of the company saw a different potential and unbeknownst to me started to groom me for management. I'm in management now and going back to school for a business degree. There might actually be some key chain sized digital photo frame options for the cellphonesI would buy one. Those old CRT TV's used to scare the fire out of me when I worked on them. I could do anything else with ease. Grounded myself and off I went, but those TV's made me very nervous. Imploding would not be pretty.

Wow! You're into electronics too? That's an excellent idea regarding the laptops into digital photo frames! I have visited museums interstate that have converted old CRT TVs into running a program for displaying information and even playing games on. I wonder what we can come up with for re-using old mobile phones?

whale made out as an art - this image is created by mu son with waste material. He is just 9 years old.
Hi Jen, Nivce to see ya after a long interval. Leonardo Da Vinci, Van Gauge and the list is a really long one, I mean of the Great artist of the yester years. The visual Art, the oil painting, the water painting and many more. Personally I like abstract painting like that of Dali and late M F Hussain. Another thing that fascinates me more is creative art. This is a new concept. Say a very familiar thing is made out with waste material in such a way that it looks exactly like like the representative of the original one. Like the one in the picture mu 9 years son made a whale with paper and some other waste material.

It's great to see you too! I hope you have been well! I love the whale! It's very creative. Especially out of waste material. There is a new regional thing here where they are weaving doormats out of plastic grocery bags. I thought it would be flimsy and not look that good but I was very surprised! The only painting I have done so far has been with oil but I do have some acrylics and water colors I haven't opened yet to try. I am looking forward to trying them. If I can ever get the time..lol. Thanks for sharing your son's art...I love it!

Hey Jwen you should try your hand. They say let your talent get a free air and see where it takes you to. My son is not good at all in conventional drawing in school like drawing of an apple or a mango. But he has made out a splendid tottoise.

Van Gogh - van Gogh's Crows in a Wheatfield
I love the Impressionists , specifically Van Gogh. His use of color is so rich it comes off the canvas and slaps you in the face. With every brushstroke I can feel his passion for the subject. He painted like Beethoven wrote music, all out! And like Chopin , It takes my breath away. Here is my favorite Van Gogh.

That sounds like fun. I would have matched Van Gogh to Beethoven. Starry Night would be his 9th symphony. My piece would be his Sixth. The Sunflowers his 7th. this is fun.

I matched it to The Planet Suite by Gustav Holst. He was nowhere near as popular as Beethoven but his biography captured my attention. His Suite is based on the plants and the Gods the Greeks had assigned them. It's an interesting array of music for sure..lol.

I like Van Gogh too. He was an amazing impressionist. I had a music instructor that wanted us to take an impressionist painting and match it to a piece of classical music. I choose his Starry Nights painting. He was a very interesting character to read about too.

I like watercolors, and I don't really care too much for what is painted if the technique is well done. My family went to Rome when I was a teen and my sister kept liking certain sculptures and it turned out they were all done by one man, even in different places she'd say she liked it and then it turned out to be done by the same artist. I like various kinds of art, mosaics amaze me and I'd like to learn to sculpt, but right now I'll doing "pictures" with my cross stitching, even if they aren't original!

Watercolor is very unforgiving. Acrylic is very much like a speed drying oil, I've done some of that, but only an abstract as a teen.

I used to cross stitch and loved it. I passed 9 months by creating my daughter a huge piece that I took from here and there to make. I haven't tried the water colors yet. My b/f says I will like those and the acrylics better than the oil I use now. He says they are easier to clean up after and they dry a lot faster. I might have to try them this weekend. Mosaics amaze me too. I have never thought of sculpting but I bet it would be interesting to try. Thanks for responding!

I have been reading the "History of Women Artists" for my art class and I think my favorite are the tapestries because they are similar to banners, something I have made myself. Though I am not nearly as good as my mentor who taught me, it was a fun project and if I had the money, I would continue to make them. I hope you really didn't want the name of the artist or the tapestry, because I read that part Monday and I can't remember..

Oh I can't draw a straight line, I am horrible, but I have visions and can do simple stuff with stencils. One time I made hands, but couldn't draw the lines to make them look real, so I asked an artist friend to do that part..:)

I was actually amazed at the way the paint kind of did itself. I am not a very good drawer either. It is actually alot more difficult to draw a detailed picture than paint one...at least it is for me..lol. Hands are hard to do. I have a hard time with noses too.

Nah...a kind of art is just fine. I hope you get the chance to do it if you liked it. It is hard to find the time to do fun stuff when you have your plate full already. It has been over a year since I have picked up a paint brush and I miss it terribly.

Surrealism tends to be my favorite? Why? Because it represents the subconscious mind, dreamscapes, and unhindered imagination. It varies from moderate to high surrealism and lets the mind explore for both the observer and the artist. I want to do surrealism myself sometime and have done a bit in my art classes. It is one that is harder to do for the more rigid and logical thinker.

I saw some very interesting surreal paintings when I went to the museum. The paint runs that were down the front really give it a dreamy weird look. I could look at it for a long time and see different stuff. Do you think that most surreal paintings are dark? I am wondering if I can find some lighter surrealism or if I need to paint some myself. You should post one of your pieces here. I would love to see something that you've done. Thanks for responding!

I like painting and weaving different patterns and pictures. I learned painting - first with oil and then with Acrylics and water colour. I wrote an article in Triond about the method I use and it is now in Expertscolumn too. Acrylics is water soluble and very easy to paint with and I had a great teacher who showed some techniques that makes the paintings look almost professional.. I like to paint without the feeling that the picture has to look like a photo. It can be a bit surrealistic but you can still see what it is meant to be..

If you want to start with something rather easy, I think acrylics are good. Water colors are more difficult, so I rarely use them. If one makes a mistake, the acrylics are rather easy to change and correct and if the painting is already dry, you can just paint a new layer above.. Some paintings can actually be made exciting with many thin layers. The other layers are shining through and gives the picture an interesting deepness that could not be managed in any one layer painting..

I paint with the oils now too but I do have a couple of small sets of water colors and acrylics I have been wanting to try. I'll have to look up your article, I haven't a clue how to use the water colors I am very impressed by realism, but I love the impressionism too. Thanks for responding!

I looked up Grandma Moses and I liked her stuff too. It was definitely interesting to see her depiction of the mountain towns..in the winter, fall, and summer I liked the one where there was a moon in the background over a dimly lit town. I watch that antique roadshow too. I like older stuff and am very curious about the things they had in the past. The furniture back then is amazing to me. Thanks for responding!

I do like art...but my favorites are Terry Redlin and Nina Fritz....I have prints and plates by both. Terry Redlin's painting depict my lifestyle...outdoors with snow...log cabins with ice skaters in the background and also churches. I am not so hot on his wildlife as much as his landscapes...winter pictures mostly. Nina Fritz paints seascapes...mothers and children feeding sea gulls....playing by the ocean. She now is in Hollywood doing movie sets....but I love the colors she uses. I have been to Terry Redlin's gallery in Watertown So. Dak. He is in a nursing home with alheimers now.....what a waste of a brilliant mind.....so sad.

I will have to research some of their work. They sound amazing. I especially like the sound of the seaside landscapes with people. It is sad to hear sometimes where the artists end up. There was a couple of amazing paintings at the museum I went to by a lady that it said ended up in a mental asylum. I think her last piece really said that although she has peaked in talent..she was in edge too. The thickness of the paint seemed a couple of inches thick and it was like she had blotted globs everywhere. The amazing thing was that it actually ended up making a brilliant looking painting of a woman with her back exposed facing a window. It was called "In the Morning"

I like abstract, realism and surrealism. I like the type with alot going on in the picture as far as structure goes. My ex was quite an artist. He tried to get me interested but I had no aptitude for it at all. I write but can draw worth a whip! I do enjoy seeing art that people I know has drawn. And I try not to get too jealous. Hehe

When I started I was amazed at the way the paint kind of did it's own thing. I don't draw before I paint but some people do. Some people like to use a picture to paint from but I do it from my head. I did have to go out and look at a few barns when I was doing this one painting though. I was missing something. I found it though and was finally able to make it look like a barn. I like paintings with a lot going on in there too. Like the longer you look, the more you see.

I don't think I could stand static art for long periods of time, so I'd choose performing arts. Last year, when I went to Vegas and saw a Cirque du Soleil show, I liked it so much that I told myself I wanted to see more of it. And I think that performance that they do is art in itself.

Hi JenInTN I am not that great when it comes to understanding many forms. But there are some which I like - the hand made cards, handlooms etc. Just about 30 kilometers from my place is another town where they do embroidery on sheets of cloth by hand. It is called "Chandua" in the local language and over the centuries it has become a name in international markets too. Personally, my brother used to learn this art and also made some stuff years ago. I on the other hand, was more confined to crafts - cutting and making greeting cards for almost all occasions.

I have never made greeting cards but I have seen some greeting cards that I thought was amazing enough to frame. I have never heard of the Chandua. I will have to look it up. I had never done any painting or such until a few years ago..maybe 5. I did cross-stitching. It is very time consuming if you make a large piece and oh so tedious. Thanks for the response.

I have a beautiful picture of Matt Smith, the current Doctor Who, created solely by hand with pencil, it depicts him in his trade bow tie and floppy hair, I have it on my wall in my bedroom, the eyes seem to watch over me, no matter where I am in my room his eyes are upon me. The artist is clearly talented, I just wish I could draw pictures, but I was useless at art. I prefer to have pictures of famous stars on screen, than boring old countryside pictures or abstract. It's good we are all different, and like different kinds of art.

I love art!!! I am an artist. I myself, create all kinds of different art because I don't have one favorite style. A lot of people in the art world say that an artist should do the same type of art over and over so, they'll be associated with one style, but I disagree. Doing the same thing over and over kills creativity. I'd much rather go from medium to medium and express myself as I wish. My all time favorite artist is Jean-Michelle Basquiat. Good discussion!!!
