Rain and marriage dates and timings

India
January 29, 2012 9:00am CST
We Hindus perform marriages after ‘match making’ of the guy and girl, this is based upon their birth data. Not only that the date of marriage and timing of marriage is determined by astrologers. So the marriage dates and most auspicious time is given in almanacs. There is no marriage season, in the sense you won’t find marriage dates in all the 12 months of the year. Another thing I have observed, at this ‘marriage-time’ the weather gets cool and there is rain usually. I was married on 7th December 1966; the ‘Panigrahan’ (ritual, in which the girl keeps her palm on palm of the groom and tied) was done at exactly 2.33 AM Indian Standard time. It rained. My sons were married in December and my daughter was married in May, it rained. The predetermined marriage time and rains at that time, irrespective of the season is certainly not coincident. Since last few days it is raining here, there are so many marriages in the city, all reception halls are booked in the hotels, and many do it in their homes. I have received more than 500 invitation cards; I will attend some, some my son will attend. We had marriage dates in April, May, June, July, November, December of 2011, and we have in January, February and March 2012; data for subsequent month is not available at present. What about your place? Are there marriage seasons, days and timing predetermined? Please respond, share your views. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead. 29/01/2012

hi professor, june is the marrying time for most filipinos, and december too when it is cold. a couple chooses the person they will marry. although there are some where parents force them to marry the man or woman that they want for their son or daughter. here, when a couple wants to marry, they seek the blessing of parents. but for those who are not given such, they elope. have a nice day. ann

hi professor...yes i agree June is the most popular month for weddings here in the Philippines and next most popular month to have weddings is the cold month of December. in choosing the dates of a wedding we also consider the phases of the moon. dates going to or nearing the full moon is most preferred and also the dates with 8 or 0 is considered for longevity or infinity.

In my country most of the marriages take place in Summer so that the couple can take their vacations to go to their honeymoon. Usually it is the bride who sets the date. If the couple do not find the chapel they like at a certain date, they change it. After all is settled they send the invitations to the wedding. Even if most people here are said to be catholics, I would not say that marriages are religious eventas but more social parties, except for very few observant couples. In my case it was absolutly uncommon. I could not choose anything as my husband was playing as a professional soccer player and was also part of our national soccer team. The team trainer choose the date after a mayor game so that my husband could be spared.

Thanks for your information on marriage customs over in india. Here in Jamaica there are no such customs of arranged marriages and thefore no marriage season. There are however times when many persons prefer to get married but for the exact opposite reason that marriages are done in India, they choose times when there is no rain. Here we choose summer months, hence june is a popular month but some couples have also chosen december to for sentimental reasons

It seems that around here, the vast majority of weddings do occur in the spring and summer months, but there are weddings held throughout the year. In my life, I think that I've attended at least one wedding in every month of the year. My own wedding was held on July 31, 2004 and it did actually unexpectedly rain on the day of my wedding. I envisioned it as being my father's tears of happiness from heaven at seeing his little girl get married.

It's a good think that that isn't much a problem where I come from. Rain or shine, people have weddings. We just don't make them too elaborate if we are going to have them during the rainy season. If it is going to be daylight, make sure that it is not too hot on that day or the people will be melting in the sunlight.

Hi Professor, Everything is very different here and every couple chooses their own marriage date. In recent years couples often set the date more than a years ahead because they want to make plans to have everything exactly as they want it. Blessings.

Very interesting. Sir. I belong to a brahmin family and my marriage was arranged in a traditional way. It was during November in Kolkata and the marriage hall was in a low-land area, a day before the wedding, it rained a lot and almost all the 'baratis' (the boy's side) reached with knee-down flood...but they all enjoyed the rainy journey from Howrah Stn. to the Hall. On the day of marriage, though everyone was happy it just drizzled for a while and then the sky got clear. A couple of years back we attended a marriage at Mumbai and it was raining... some of my husband's relative (who were present in my wedding too) was remebering her Kolkata trip and the rains. Thanks for sharing, i never know about such a connection.. best regards,

Hello professor ... There is no marriages season in my place. The old people do the same here, they always choose the best date for having mariage party, they also look at their birth date. But now most new generation don't use those kind of believes again. We always have wedding party in Sunday or other holidays day because people are free those days and won't disturb their activity while attending the wedding. :)

I've always wondered about the Hindu marriages. For us, the man picks the girl from any region, introductions and a customary done and the girl becomes a wife. A church wedding takes place later.

yes in my culture also wedding is always held in the lucky numbers and not the bad numbers , also as close as possible to holidays especially those public holidays so that the anniversary will be special and got hotlidays and also to ensure the ceremony can be attended by the maxinum frens since it is a holiday. Sometime travelling is required for the groom and bridegroom hence good dates is essential.

Hello Professor, Thanks for sharing such an interesting information. Well at my place we dont have the date fixing according to birth data. Yes, but there is something we surely do to make sure that its a good sign from God. We pray and ask God in the night to show us a dream. We do it for 3 days! If we get a dream filled with happiness, fruits, birds, sweets, happy faces then it means that its a good sign but when we get a dream of accident, some bad things then its surely not a good sign. My marriage took place on 21st April. The whole of winter it did not rain, and April is not suppose to be winter in Dubai but it rained on my marriage!! They also say that rain is a good sign, specially when two people are uniting together. Well for now I did not see any good, but hoping that one day it shall come :D! Cheers.
