Some more facts about Valentine day

India

This was also told to us by hubby’s friend Prof Rodrigues our family friend. All these were done on Valentine Day. Hundreds of years ago kids in England dressed as old men, used to visit homes, they used to sing songs. In Wales, wooden spoons that had figures of heart lock and key engraved on them; were given as gifts. In some county (Prof Rodrigues could not recollect name of country), if a girl accepted gift from a guy, it was supposed to imply that she will marry her. Some think, if a girl happens to see a Red Robin on this day, she is supposed to marry a sailor. If a girl sees a sparrow, she will marry a poor man but she will happy lifelong. If a girl sees a golfing (kind of bird, may be the spelling is wrong), she will marry a millionaire. Another faith, girls and guys twist the stem of an apple till it breaks; while doing so they utter names of guys or girls they want to marry, they name one uttered just when it broke, is the person supposed to be the husband or wife. Some girls, take a Dandelion flower that has seeds already formed, they blew air at it, the number of seeds that remains, is supposed to be the number of kids she will give birth to. Some girls, take an apple, cut it to two halves and count the number of seeds, this is supposed to be the number of kids she will give birth to. I don’t know the truth about all these, but guess some are true, what is your opinion; any such believes that you know. HAPPY VALENTINE DAY TO ALL MYLOT MEMBERS. Please comment and share your valued opinion. Kalyani 13/02/2012.

I think the bird for a wealthy husband might be a goldfinch.I know there have been charming folktales over the years about love and marriage. I do not think they really do much about them anymore. There is also the idea of pulling petals off a daisy or similar flower and saying "he loves me" "he loves me not" as you pull each one and the last one left tells whether you are loved or not.

I really do think that all of these that you've shared here are really interesting, however I really don't think that any of them are true at all. Throught the course of my life I've heard many superstitions, but I've never thought any of them could be true. However, I will say that in my experience, those people that have less money tend to be a lot happier than those people that have a lot of money.

I like all of those Prof Rodrigues beliefs for Valentine's! I would not mind seeing at least one of those birds you mentioned, as it sounds so romantic! Greetings to you, your hubby and the Prof!!

Hi Kalyni, it is good to hear so many nice and interesting folktales from you. So far, i ever heard some of them from my friends but i never take serious into believing them. After all, they are only folktales that being handed down from one generation to another generation. As for me here, we are celebrating a family Valentine's Day. Happy Valentine's Day to you and family, Kalyni.
