Annoying Fingerprints

Sure would appreciate any suggestions on how to get rid of fingerprints on my computer screen. Our little grandbaby gets on the chair and then points to things on the computer which of course leaves prints. I have tried a vinegar and water mix, plain water and even a tad bit of furniture polish. Nothing seems to eliminate the problem. Would appreciate very much any recommendations. Thanks.

I use whiteboard cleaner. It's fairly inexpensive & the prints are gone & NO STREAKING!!! When you first wipe, you'll see a trail of streaking behind each swipe; however, those evaporate fairly fast & there is NO telltale residue left behind!!! This cleaner comes in a spray bottle & I just apply a light spray across the screen followed by a swipe of a paper towel. Since it doesn't take much to clean thoroughly, it usually comes in a tiny spray bottle. When I can find the larger bottles, I buy them & refill the smaller bottles. No where does it claim to clean computer screens, but an old tech turned me on to the suggestion & it works wonderfully...plus it's a LOT cheaper than the wipes they want us to buy & I bet it's the same solution!!! I was responsible for the computer care in my office & everybody was always touching their screen to point out something to others & then b*tching because there were fingerprints on their screen. This was before the wipes came out & I made a comment to an IBM technician that I needed a solution & he suggested the whiteboard cleaner. He said if it'll clean ink, it will surely clean fingerprints.

I have this problem with my laptop too since the kids in my house also point at things and touch the computer leaving fingerprints. I usually get rid of them just by using a damp cloth and wiping the screen. You can also find special cleaners or computer wipes and try those if nothing else seems to be working for your computer screen...

Things I have tried just don't work. I continue to see the fingerprints and streaking. Thanks for responding.

you can get special screen wipes which are really good for the newer types of screens, you have to be very careful what you use on the newer screens apparantly...if you have an older screen I am very surprise vinegar and water didn't work, I am sure someone here will have the answer...

I have a much older screen. Anything I have tried to this point only smears the prints. Thanks for responding.

We have specially treated tissues for eyeglasses that work well on screens. There is a picture on the back that says also for tv screens, computer screens, etc.

I don't know what type or brand of computer you're using. I don't really use any cleanser or liquid-based solution to wipe off the fingerprints on the computer screen. I was advised not to. I just use a microfiber rag which can be bought in most computer shops here. It works well at removing smudges on the screen and it doesn't scratch it.

My screen is real old and eventually needs to be replaced so I don't mind scratches at this point. Thanks for the information and for responding. I'll have to check it out at a computer store.

I think that the first thing that we need to know would be whether you have a CRT monitor or if you have an LCD monitor. If you have an LCD monitor, then there are special wipes that you can get for those to clean off the screen. However, if you have a CRT monitor then what I've found to be the best thing to clean off the monitor is just plain old windex that is used when the computer monitor has been turned off and is cool.

I did try Windex but didn't turn off the monitor and let it cool down. Will try what you suggest next. My monitor is very old. Thanks for responding.

Well I have an older monitor that came with a computer I got about 15 years ago. The computer got too slow and so I bought a new one about 6 years ago but the monitor was fine so I kept it and its still working and will probably outlive this 6 year old computer as well. It is like the old tvs where they have glass. You just have to unplug it so it doesnt have any electricity running through it then spray it with windex and rub it with a cry cloth. I'm guessing you have a flat screen computer moniter? I have a flat screen tv and I have fingerprints all over mine as well. I'm worried about using anything on it. If yours is flat screen and you find something to take it off let me know!

The monitor is probably close to 20 yrs. old so it's not flat screen. It's a fossil...lol Thanks for responding.

We've used things like dish soap on a cloth, there's screen cleaner in a bottle you can buy, and sometimes a microfiber cloth will due.

Guess I need to buy some screen cleaner. Nothing I have in the house works. Thanks for responding.

Hi carolbee, I normally get my computer cleaner fro the computer store as thy tells me never to use water on the screen, they have special liquid to put on the cloth and then wipe the computer, I use it all the time for my laptop. Tamara

Dish washing liquid in a little water works well for me. Just wet enough to wipe with a tissue - not soaking wet!

Well, if none of the suggestions mentioned above will remove the smudges, then you can try to put something on the monitor to make your grandbaby not to touch the screen again. Use screen electrocution. You know, maybe put something on the screen that sends a bit of a shock to the fingers of those who touches the monitor. (Kids, please don't try this at home!) Ahahaha!

I'd rather replace the monitor then shock our grandbaby.

Orange peals? I heard that if you take a little towl, and wipe it on the screen it will take away finger prints. Just take the peal and rub it on the towl, then use the towl to wipe the screen off. I hope it works. If not, I am sorry.

Really? No I mean, just teach him to not touch the monitor, tell him it's a bad thing to do. Besides that, I'm surprised you can't clean his fingerprints off, just a semi-wet cloth should do the job.

I've tried to teach her not to touch but it doesn't work so well. Thanks for responding.
