What, For You, Is Your First Sign of Spring?

Spring is almost here! My favorite time of year! What signals the return of Spring to me? I live in a city, a very urban neighborhood. Yet there is one major avenue, near the beltway, that has a grassy area with some nice trees. Each year, right at the start of Spring, daffodils bloom. Hundreds of yellow daffodils, sunny yellow, beautiful and bright against the harsh city background. The moment I see them each year it tells me "Spring is here!". What about you? Any thing, or any visual cues that signify the start of Spring?

well i have a massive cherry tree in my garden and as soon as i see the blossom, i know spring is almost here, this morning i saw one blossom popping out of it's branch, we get white blossom on the tree, but the copper beech we get pink and it's half full already, plus i see finches, bluetits, robins and other garden birds out there feeding on the seeds i put out each day, i love this time of year, it says, spring is here but summer follows, :)

hi trinkabelle and timetravel just be glad you do not have the large noisy seagulls come around here behind our building and pull out food bits from the Vietnamese grocery store trash bins. then they squawk as they fight amongst themselves over the stuff they pull out of the garbage bins.old smelly fish etc . the air gets to stinking and the birds are screaming and I want to yell "OH shut up out there" but people would think I was nuts. lol lol

That sounds absolutely beautiful, trinkabelle! I've thought of getting a little bird feeder for our backyard. I would love to see something besides our city pigeons each year!

well if you buy the seeds it will attract other birds besides them smelly pigeons, we have wood pigeons that come into the garden but they are lovely, they sound like doves, it's the other birds i love, if you buy the seeds that have been made into fat balls, the suet ones, they love that, you could get a feeder or even a bowl and put them on the window ledge, it's surprising how many birds are attracted by them

Spring is also my favorite time of year. I LOVE seeing everything come to life and everything becoming so colorful. I live in the country and have hundreds of flowers on my property. My daffodils pushing their way up through the soil signify the first sign of Spring's arrival to me. Also, I start getting excited when I notice that the stores around here have begun putting out flower and vegetable seeds along with all the gardening equipment. This year, with the very mild winter we've had, not only have my daffodils arrived and are blossoming but my tulips and hyacinths are also growing. I was outside today raking up some leaves to take advantage of the ultra-nice weather and noticed that several other perennials have begun new Spring growth even though it's still technically Winter. Today, the weather was so Spring-like today that I felt sad knowing it's not going to last. We still have some cold days to go through, although it is warming up a bit in general.

Morning, time travel.....AND my dear Marti! @Marti...aha, NOW I can give you some weather info, that you can relate to..(remember I had to convince you I didn't live in an Igloo in the Ice age..LOL)! Well, Marti (now with satellite) I watch a lot of Boston news...(right now I am listening to WBZ as I myLot)....and the weather in that area, almost mimics exactly ours...BUT colder...yes, colder! I know, it is hard to believe when I live NORTH of the 49th...but it is because of living on an Island, with warmer Pacific breezes! @timetravel.........Spring is definitely my most favourite time of year, it is the season SO FILLED with hope and promise, YOU just know there are lovely days ahead. A time of beginnings! Some of the first harbingers of spring on my property are the crocuses..in a plethora of colors..purple, mauve, white, soft or bright yellow, that I have let go to seed, and you find them poking their little heads out all over, here, there and everywhere! We got a bit (just a dusting of snow last week, when your area got the dump) and they looked so lovely poking thru the snow. Daffodils, narcissi, tulips and hyacinths to follow. Who wouldn't love spring! And like Marti, the seed catalogs start my anticipation! Just love spring!

Hey! I notice that you're in Baltimore. I was born and raised in Baltimore! We moved here to Winchester, Virginia about 5 years ago. What area do you live in? I was born in the Roland Park area but moved around a bit. I lived in Charles Village, Hampden, Woodlawn, Towson and also lived in Columbia for awhile. Howdy neighbor!

cool, mentalward! I live in Remington - right near Charles Village and Hampden! Probably close to where you lived! We're right off Howard St. on 27th St. in a rowhouse with a small backyard. We moved from the REservoir Hill area last year. It's on North ave. where the daffodils bloom annually - do you remember seeing them there? We call our area the "poor man's Hampden" lol... How is Virginia compared to Baltimore? It seems as if daffodils and tulips are definite signs of Spring all over!

Hi timetravel. You are so right about the flowers. I was walking in February with my grandson over on the farm and we went out to the barn and farm equipment, and there were beautiful yellow buttercups everywhere. They are so beautiful. We had to pick some and take them to his other grandma and his momma. Now they have spread all over the grassy hilll and they are everywhere you drive. Spring time! Gives you the fever!

I live in a village in country,we can find many signals when the spring comes. When the spring comes, the wind is strong but not cold. The wood looks appear light yellow from far away. The grass grow out of the ground and become green.Peach blossom and pear blossom bloom first. We can also seen the ants begin to busy working for food and the swallowss flying happily in the sky. I like spring as well,it is my favoutite season of the year.

When my son starts to sneeze a lot on the way to school as he's allergic pollen. Also when many hard waste were put on the curbs around many neighborhoods for spring cleaning collections. Lately, I notice almost every household is throwing away those big bulky TVs as people switch to thin-screened plasma or LCDs

At least they have switched! Yes, signs of pollen and hayfever are, for some, the first signs of Spring. Do you give your son anything for his allergies? When I was little I was highly allergic to ragweed - my mother had to dig it out by the roots from our backyard! I am allergic to cut grass - but only some types of grass.

Baltimore never changes lol.....it's still the same city as it always was. Traffic is awful, buses are noisy, and people still beg on street corners. Allergies often get better as people grow up. But in my case, it seems like my reactions to cut grass get stronger each year.

He takes hay fever & allergy relief/antihistamine tablets. Does your allegy get better with time? Seems to me his allergy is not as bad as when he was younger; I'm not sure if it is because of his age or the fact that we moved overseas. How's Baltimore? I used to live in Bethesda in early '80s and I have friends who went to Montgomery College. I actually miss those days...

I believe that the first signs of spring for me are seeing the daffodils and tulips start to vloom. it is a feeling of renewal. Watching the winter fade away and the spring blossom is a time for the world to be reborn.

It's already raining here in the Philippines. I guess spring had started already, despite the summer still peeking. Yeah, I don't really understand the weather here anymore. Sometimes it will be so hot it seems you can fry eggs outside without any tools. Sometimes it would rain completely like it's the middle of spring. Sometimes it's raining, although the sun is still up. I guess the weather here have been on PMS for a while now.

For me, it's when the sun starts waking me just that little bit earlier. It's a sure sign. I saw some crocuses there at the weekend which were lovely to see, another sign. What a cheery discussion - thanks for posting

You are welcome, TheIrishClog! Crocuses in bloom sound simple Springly beautiful! Many people like the warm Summer months, but my city is full of humidity and high temperatures making Summer miserable unless inside in air conditioning. Spring, on the other hand - the air smells fresh, we can open our windows and invite in a bit of the outdoors!

I'm one of those that prefers the summer, as our summers here can be as crappy as our winters, but we get the odd week here and there with nice warm weather (by warm I mean 24 degrees celsius). No need for air conditioning here! That said, I do love the smell of Spring, the lambs in the fields and the typical Spring flowers. I also love that the grass and weeds start growing, I can start to cut the weeds and grass again for my tortoises!

Well, I live in a city of homes. So it's usually row after row of homes and each house sometimes have some grassy hill in front of it with flowers and trees lined up in a designed kind of order. My first sign of spring would be when the flowers bloom and the trees grow green leaves instead of having no leaves at all or different colored leaves like when they do in Autumn. Besides that, the sunny weather and warmish cold breezes would be another sign.

That's why I mentioned the yellow daffodils. There's something about Spring that brings out the color everywhere, even in cities with rowhouses and older buildings.

hi timetravel its the gorgeous pinks and lilac colors of blooming thees here in Garden Grove California that tells me spring soon will be sprung. like the old verse we had as kids," spring is sprung, the grass is riz, so wonder where all the birdies is" poor grammar but it did rhyme haha.

I never heard the rhyme, Hatley, but I like it! With kid's rhymes, who cares about grammar? hahaha. Garden Grove - isn't that where the Rev. Schuller had the first drive in church?
