Before when i was still living with my family at home we used to do our groceries at least once a week. We usually do it every Sunday because it is ou family day and its the time where we spend time eating out and doing grocery for the whole week's supply. My mom is usually very particular with expiry dates whenever we buy anything in supermarkets whether it may be junk foods or canned goods. She is not quite particular about prices as long as she knows that what we would be buying would not go to waste. How about you? What do you usually check for before buying an item while doing your grocery? Thanks for sharing guys.

Well, I think the most important would be price, although sometimes quality does go over price. Anyway, expiration date is important, but not that critical, you can still eat something that expired a few days day.

Before I go to the store, I make a check of the things that I am out of or am running low on and might be running out of within the next week. Also, I look at the sales paper that we get in the mail on Tuesday, to map out a course of what might be the best list. The key is to really make a list. A strict list that must be followed without absolute fail. Because as I have learned, painfully in the past, by not following the grocery list, it is going to blow the grocery budget right open. So yeah, I try and map out a plan right before I even step right out of the house on my way to the store. It does work out well. I try not to stray from it, with a few exceptions. Grocery stores are devious after all, really trying to put items where people can really find them, where they are enticed by them, where they can look at them. But I must remain strong and I must stick to that list that I made, what brought me to the dance.

The most affordable items in the grocery, disregarding the impractical goods to buy.

No that my sweet mom has started having many health issues and has to be on several diets I have to look at the calories, sodium, and potassium to keep her levels where they should be. It's a tough job. My sis 'n law does it most for Mom, but I have now gotten in a habit of looking at them for myself since my doctors aren't too crazy about my cholesterol levels. I already had the practice with Mom, so it isn't that big of a deal. Just comes naturally. I have to watch the expiration dates on my dog food and dog and cat treats. I don't know why but the stores tend to let the expiration dates on these lapse and leave them on the shelves longer. I brought a bag of dogfood home once and as soon as I opened it I felt like it smelled wrong. I gave my dog a scoop and he wouldn't eat it. I looked at the expiration date, and it was OVER a year old. I took it back, and there wasn't another expired one on the shelf. They apologized for my getting that one and had NO IDEA how it was on the shelf. I've also had that same issue with dog and cat treats. I watch the dates closely now so it doesn't happen anymore.

I usually shop with my wife during weekends at the local hypermarket nearby, called Giant and also Jusco which is 8 km away. We compared the prices among the similar products of different brands, of course in the same hypermarket. We hardly check the expiry date as they are big reputable companies and those items are fast moving products. Nevertheless, it happened to me just one week ago.I bought 1 canister of potato crisps from 7 Eleven. Only two days later we found out that it had an expiry date of December, 2011. Today is March, 12, 2012. Two days later I returned the expired potato crisps to 7 Eleven. The cashier was kind enough to offer me a new exchange without any receipt as proof of purchase. There was a 7 Eleven price tag on the canister and besides, I am a regular. This means it is good to be a regular.

I always check on the expiration date of the products that I want to purchase especially for those with chemical components and with preservatives, and I think this is at most essential for consumers like us. I also look at on the product details and information for some procedures and safety tips. And most especially of course is on the quality and price of the product.

I used to check on the expiry date,I think it is the most important at most. I also try to look on the product content and details, and of course on the price and quality of the product.

Everything, I check prices, expiration dates, what the ingredients are and if it is halal or not. It's getting to the point where most food sold in stores are not good, not even the produce..

I'm usually at the grocery store a few times a week, because I'm mainly a fan of fresh fruits and vegetables, and I don't want them going bad, so gotta get them regularly. So, with the fresh things, you have to check for imperfections when you get them... I think that's pretty common. But with packaged goods, I check a lot. I look at how many calories are in each serving, and often figure out how much is in the whole container. I'm a big guy, so I try and get my calories down as much as possible. Then, I check the ingredients. I'm allergic to MSG, which has loads of names, like "yeast extract" or "natural flavor", so I look over to see if there's any of that. If the product has no MSG, and low calories, it's mine!

Hi Cyclopz, I do have some criteria when buying from a grocery store. For items that are packed/packaged I usually check for the nutrition facts about the product, the expiry date, and then the price. For other goods like fruits, veggies, and meat/poultry, I check the color and the texture and sometimes the smell to see if the product is still fresh.

The first thing that my wife will do is check the availability of stocks in our house. Then make a list of the items to be bought. Once we're in the grocery, she checks for the price because she picks the lesser one and she is very particular with expiry dates too especially if it will be used for later days.

If I go to the grocery I always check first the expiry dates for the items I am buying. And the prices for the things I may or may not be buying and think if the product is worth the price. It is not easy to earn money nowadays.
