The Crime of Eating

I am a person who LOVES eating. I think eating is my passion. The thing is these days I get a lot of comments when I eat. Some people when they see me eating snacks they would say, "Eating again?". When I buy food they would say, " my gosh you sure eat a lot" or " you're such a pig". Sometimes during special gatherings someone will say, " don't eat too much." Even when I eat in normal eating time people tend to comment. It's as if people are trying to make me feel that eating is a crime. I get it when foreigners will say those words to me because they are not used to Filipino culture. What I don't get is why fellow Filipinos are giving me a hard time when I eat. I just feel like it is so rude. Sometimes it is bearable but sometimes it hurts. It is embarassing. I think it is sometimes rude. What do they care if I eat? I am not asking or begging them for food nor am I forcing them to eat. Why can't they just mind their own business. If I get fat it's my problem. Plus I exercise everyday. Duh. Eating is a part of life and I think people have the freedom to eat. Do you think so? What should I say the next time someone comments on my eating? Do you experience being convicted for eating?

Yes, some people tends to be insensitive over things. Maybe it's a small thing but it can hurt people feeling. I am fat, but I don't eat that much. It's just in my gene I think besides that I don't like to do any sports. When I eat, people tends to say: Are you on a diet? I told them many times, no, this is my normal portion. From the look on their eyes I can see that they think I am lying, and I am trying to disguise my eating portion in public. Duh! Well, when it gets too much you can always reply: Does it hurt you so much seeing me eating?

as long as you pay for your own food then you don't do any crime at all just be careful when you eat too much, disease will hunt you as well

Hi flapiz oh, if you have an extra food you can hand it to me thus you can reduce the risk of getting serious disease right? cause we already share it together

Haha. Okay, okay. That's a very good idea. It needs shipment fees though and that I cannot afford.

Hi Ifa! Well I pay for my own food most of the times. Sometimes I get some free munch but then I do not force people to buy me food. Yes I'd be careful. Too much eating causes lifestyle diseases.

I'd suggest you just ignore such negative people and their stupid comments. Shrug off such negativity, be indifferent and mockingly tell them to get a life! You just focus on enjoying your delicious meal and hopefully it'll taste even more yummy. Hopefully they'll get the signal, and you can have your peace. Have a great day, Cheers! :)

Yes you are right. Why should I even bother thinking about their comments. They don't even bother to think about my feelings. I will ignore them next time.

Why you cared of others? You pay and you eat or you cook and you eat - simple. Even I am also eat as much I feel like and no need to worry about your eating habits. Normally there is a belief that girls/women won't eat much food at a time. But from my experience, a person who have good health would prefer eat little extra or more. That is genuine and your eating habit indicates that you are in good health also. So, nothing to worry, if anyone comments (in open) just react on the spot and they never will comment. These all are in general. But if you eat healthy food it is ok, but beware of junk and heavy non-veg food which may impact in the long run. As you said, body exercise and formal health body care practices won't give you trouble. However, a balance and healthy food habit keep your health also fit and tik-tact. Elders used to say that 'only the hard-working' people only can eat more because they work and eat. So hope you also hard working and keep eating as much you can and don't bother too much about. Only think - eat as much you feel like and don't buffe the junk which may feel uneasiness. Now also, at lunch time, I am having lunch with a group of 8-10 people. All of them decided to go out of lunch and as I have carried my lunch and got some urgent work I didn't accompanied with them. I eat my lunch and other 2 person's lunch also provided to me. In short, I had a HEAVY lunch and still I am confortable. But feeling sleepy but feel fine as I am writing to you - hahaha

First of all thank you for this enlightening response. I like the part when you said only hard working people eat a lot. Well I guess I can say I am hardworking. Yes food portions should be considered. Eating a balance diet and the right kind of food is essential. And junk food can be eaten for pleasure but on limited amount. After all the eating exercise is necessary. Wow that's a lot of lunch. I'm glad to know that there are still people who enjoy food as it is without worrying to much of the carbohydrates, fats, and calories. Happy eating.

eating is absolutely not a crime it's a natural right. Without food our body cells could not function normally but in the case of gluttony or overeating, that's when it becomes senseless.

I think I am guilty of over eating sometimes. But well it's not that I gobble what I couldn't eat. I always finish my food. I am almost always hungry so I guess it's not really gluttony because by description gluttony is when you eat when you are not hungry?

Hi, flapiz :) In my opinion, eating is SO not a crime; but lack of self-control when eating is bad on so many level, but still not a crime. As I understand it, only cannibalism is a crime. So you can tell people that ;) I love to eat too. I don't eat a huge amount at one time, but I regularly munch something throughout the day. If people dares to mention it to me, I just look at them calmly and keep chewing my food, lol! It's not like I was doing anything harmful to them; plus I know what food is bad for my health in which case I don't eat it. So I don't let anyone make me feel bad for eating.

Well that's a nice way to tell people to mind their own business. As long as we do not harm them they shouldn't bother us right?

We Filipinos I think are the most critical race especially amongst our fellow Filipinos. You can see this when people make fun of the Visayan accent or even the culture of those living in the provinces. I hate to say this, but it's more like power tripping for me when people become critical of other people. I haven't had anyone tell me or criticize me for my eating habits. It's more like the other way around. People want to see what I am eating. I remember when I was working in the night shift, my team mates would raid my lunch bag and just leave me with some money so that I can just buy my lunch. These are usually sandwiches and I sometimes get frustrated and tell them that it's just plain peanut butter and jelly. I solved this by just bringing two or three sandwiches so that all of us can share. They also know that I bake and I don't know if these team mates of mine are part dog because they can smell if I have a homemade cake or brownie in my lunch bag!

Yes it is precisely power tripping and it is a sad scenario. Why should people bring down their fellow human just to have a fleeting taste of superiority? By the way, I am Visayan so I can totally relate with your example. I hope we learn to help each other succeed rather than prevent each and everyone by succeeding. This attitude has got to stop. NOW. WOW!!! You bake? That sounds terrific. Makes me want to eat.

I would just brush it off and don't worry about it. You can do whatever you want to do it's a free country. We need to eat to survive and if you like to eat a lot then so be it. I don't care what other people think about me and if they say stuff i just ignore it and continue living my life how i want too. I eat quite a bit too but I only eat 2 meals a day sometimes 3 and when I do eat I eat big at each meal. If people say stuff I don't care I just continue doing it. And like you said I excercise daily as well and go for walks when it's nice out. But just continue eating and living your life and if they say anything again to you just ignore them.

None of anyone else's business when you eat, what you eat or how much you eat. Just enjoy it, and like you say, if you do get fat it's your problem then you can deal with it in your own way. Eating nice things is one of life's greatest pleasures and can be an art form. I think the only time eating becomes a problem is when people do it as a distraction from something else, like emotional problems.

Yes indeed eating is one of life's greatest pleasure. It is also a culture and an art form. So we must cherish and enjoy it. I am guilty of turning to food when I am depressed though.

I like and love to eat.Whenever I feel hungry I will eat.i don't care what they say about how much I eat as long as I love what I'm doing who cares,it is also my money not theirs.

Exactly my point it is my money not theirs too. Sometimes inside my head I imagine myself telling them: Well I'm sorry if I can afford more food than you. But well that's just inside my head because I don't want fights and I'm not that rude. :)

How awful for them to say things like that, it is just plain rude, I agree. They shouldn't be commenting about stuff like that, as if they are perfect in every way. If you love eating, then that is your guilty pleasure, keep on doing it, who cares what they say. I would just ignore them, it's none of their business. i once had an arguement with someone, and it had nothing to do with the argument, but then they just blurted out all of a sudden" How much do you weigh?" Well, that was the first time it made me take a good hard look at myself and attempt to loose 40 pounds, as I'm the sensitive kind anyways. I'm happy I did, but that same person kept pestering me another time when I tried to loose another 23 pounds when I put some of the weight back on (they kept telling me I was loosing it too fast when in fact I was loosing it slowly, as it took me several months to just loose those last 23 pounds! Doh... Grrr...) Some people can't be pleased no matter what. So you just have to do the right thing for you and not worry what others think, bottom line.

Well you are right people are really so hard to please. I posted this discussion to sort of air out my frustration. The thing is I have always been okay and happy with myself. I am not even over weight. I am the curvy type though. But these judgemental or plain nosy people keep throwing this comments in my face and making me feel bad about myself. They are also making my meal less appetizing. Sigh. Thanks a lot though for your words. It's good to know some people experiences same problems as mine. At least I know I am normal. Heheh. :)

Eh. I know what you feel! LOL. Same people, same comment. Why they care so much of our eating habit pfff. If I eat a lot they comment that I am eating and I will get fat blah blah, and when I don't eat or just less they comment that I need to eat a lot, and gain weight. PEOPLE! The thing is - even if you do it or not, they'll always have something to say.

VERY true. I guess that very annoying attitude of people can't be wiped out. They keep giving us mixed signals. It is so confusing and nerve wracking. I hope there is a "mute button" somewhere so that I could just press it.

Yes, people do have freedom to eat. They can do so anytime of the day. But I do understand why Filipinos think that eating too much is a crime or something like that. In the Philippines, eating is not a freedom, its already a privilege. Lots of people in the Philippines hardly eat three times a day. But I also do understand you, I think, if you can afford to eat and eat all day long, do it. It's your money anyway, why should people care? But there are some risks of eating excessively.

Well yes eating is a privilege. I think not only here in the Philippines but also in other parts of the world. If you have money then you can eat good and more delicious food. You are called lucky. Of course I value this privilege and I enjoy it as much as I can. I even share it to my friends and if I feel extra kind I even go out of my way to share to the less privileged in forms of donation. So I don't get why people are bothering on my eating. I am eating because I can and at least I finish what I started eating and not waste food. I understand also that eating too much is sometimes detrimental to the health. That is why I do exercise to burn excess fats and improve my metabolism. Now that you said it, I realize maybe some of those people just care so much for me that's why they comment on my eating. But I definitely know also that some of those who comment just want to bring me down. Thank you for your views. It gave me something to ponder on.

haha i precisely understand how you feel, specially that i have a not so small body frame! i've been fond of eating even before i knew how to write my name! but whether they admit it or not, when we mix with people of different culture, we tend to influence them with our fondness in eating haha

Well I think we are in the same position. It does suck sometimes though. Talking about mixing with different cultures, we had a Japanese volunteer here in our place she's been here for two years and her goodbye speech was like this: At the first 6 months I wanted to go home to Japan. I didn't understand Philippines because people are always eating. But now I understand. I don't want to go home anymore. Hahaha...
