Drama in TV and Real Life

I noticed that there are a lot of drama series showing on TV everywhere. Soap operas to be specific. While I watched some of these dramas especially those who are written by my scriptwriter friends, sometimes I find it tiring to watch more drama in television because there are enough drama that is happening in real life. Our lives are full of drama already,so why bother watching another drama? What can you say about this? Do you love watching soap operas?

hello there. LOL. very well said my friend! i hate television drama, even in the movies. they seem to have similar plot, over and over. different scenes. one plot, one ending. i rarely see drama with unique plot and ending. i think writers can think of anything anymore? haha. not to mean your friends, dude. i'm pertaining to most other drama writers nowadays. anyway, just don't watch if you don't bother watching such programs. it will ruin your day. cheers!

Hello friend, I have lone been praying for a different plot and story lines for dramas showing n the television and nothing has change by far. No offense to the scriptwriters because I have utmost respect for them. It is just my opinion that these stories can be tiring at times.

Hello ladyheminway. I used to watch several soap operas every day. When I was in high school we had to be sure to run home to be sure to see the ones that were on late in the afternoon. It finally got so that watching once a week was enough to keep up with what was going on. It seemed that all of the soap operas fallowed pretty much the same story line. There was a time when soap operas were on all day and then they started having at least one almost every night. There two that were bit different. One was more of a detective and Dr show. Now it seems that there are very few soap operas on here any more. One of the old evening soap operas look like it is coming back. There may be a lot more on the HBO cable but I don't have that. The thing about Soap operas is that too many people see them as being normal and that life should fallow them. Since the soap operas have gone the way of the dinosaur They are replaced with reality shows. There are getting to be too many of them too. I do li9ke a good drama show but not many of them made these days. No need for me to watch soap operas since I live with three teenagers and so get plenty of drama here at home.

I really stopped watching them when the story seemed to repeat it's self over and over.

Same goes for me. I stopped watching when I can sense how the story will end after watching for just a few minutes. I really wish they could make fresh new stories with different twist, only then I could appreciate it again.

Hello deebomb, I love it when you said that people see soap operas as being normal and that life should follow them. I guess that is the magic why these shows were given attention by people. It is just sad that with two many soap operas shown, they tend to end up having the same plot, though not literally, but in one way or another. Yes, reality shows are now everywhere, and I have to say that I am one of those who got hooked my it. Just like soap operas, some of these shows are good while the others are just plain blah. I could imagine how it is to live with three teenagers at home. My mom stopped taking her daily dose of soap operas when me and my siblings reached our teen years

Hello cher913, I also find it frustrating when you watch drama series but wasn't able to follow through each episode, then you're lost.

I think people just enjoy watching drama since they can relate to it. And it really releases emotions inside them, they can even relate some of the villain with those in their lives. it also gives them hope, when the protagonist rises and succeeds, which also give them hope in their lives.

I agree with you on that one. I know a lot of people that have drama in their life and love to watch those shows full of drama. I think some people feel the more drama the happier they are.

Ya, sometime we really need to watch romantic drama and temporarily forget real drama...

Yes friend, and sometimes, in my case, I watch romantic drama because I do not have someone to be romantic with in real life, so watching it on television somehow helps.

I love Korean love stories You got me there, my friend. While I am not crazy about the drama series in our country, if there's a light love story mixed with drama and some comedy, I could see myself enjoying that.

Well a much awaited discussion.. I feel that soap operas are not bad unless and until the content of the show is gripping. Soap operas are meant to deliver family values, relationships and certain areas of life that we often face. But nowadays soap operas are becoming patchy and dry in content in the wake of getting TRP and publicity.. Soap operas should keep intact the content that they are meant to show and not deviate from the original content.. In India, nowadays many social and uninhibited issues are being flaunted by the soap operas which is commendable..and i would appreciate if these soap operas continue to show the same content without any further modification.. In the end, i would like to say that soap operas which used to rule the small screens are slowly loosing their global touch because of their excess display of drama and emotions. they should rather retain their originality and then only, the era of soap operas would be back...!!

Hello lady and sub. I used to watch Soap Operas many years ago and as far as I can remember they never really had much as far as family values are concerned.

Hello subhojit, thank you for that very detailed observation. I agree that soap operas are meant to show family values, lessons, and the whole nine yards. But we cannot also discount the fact that it is also meant for entertainment, that is why they are shown in the television. I guess that is where the problem lies. Some of these soap operas tend to lean heavily on the entertainment aspect of their existence, instead of the other side where there are the things which the viewers can benefit from other than being entertained. I agree that when they go back into providing quality stories with a striking balance between entertainment and information dissemination, it would probably create a golden age for them in that respect.

Thank you for the response. Yeah soap operas need to have a striking balance between entertainment and the content that they are meant to show. A heavy dose of either of the two will definitely reduce the show's popularity. the show's director should make it a point of keeping intact the momentum of these shows in order to lure the same audience who used to watch it and also at the same time attract the new existing crop of audiences. By this, the show will not only benefit itself by topping the popularity charts but would also entertain the audience with its content...!

I use to watch soap opera a lot years ago. Now I rarely watch, as am so easy now. Its hard to get everything done now. There certainly are less of them in the morning and afternoon than years ago.

Hello Fishmomma, yes I noticed that too. Maybe because nowadays, there are other shows showing on the television that people already appreciates other than drama series. It is a a good development though.

I don't watch a lot of soap operas. I more prefer reality shows because they seem to be more realistic, (although who really knows lol). Like you said, soap operas can be really tiring and redundant. They would get really old really fast for me! However, I do like watching the drama on TV because I'd like to think I don't have a lot of real-life drama going on. Even if there's drama going on in my life, I like watching reality shows because it makes me feel better haha.

I sort of like drama. Because the drama that is going on on TV is never anything like the drama going on in real life. The drama in my life is a lot smaller than the drama in, for example, Desperate Housewives or something to that extent. lol. My life is pretty boring though and that's why I will sometimes watch shows like that, for the excitement of it!

Hello maezee, you have a point there and can I just say that thankfully our dramas in life is a lot smaller than the one they are showing on the television? Otherwise, the world will be a much crazier place to live in

I use to watch drama series, but that was long ago. Well, those drama as we think are only scripted- do happens in real life. We never knew someone in our neighborhood has the same life story that we thought it's just a piece of script from tv drama series. Life in real is full of drama- action-and even X-files :p

Hello jaiho2009, you made me laugh with the X-files part And yes I agree that real life has full of dramas

I don't love watching them although I like watching them every now and them. I think people like watching soap operas (and any drama) because they like seeing all that drama happening to other people and characters and not to them. Plus, it is funny to see the unrealistic story lines, like when people keep coming back to life (and in the wierdest ways...)!
• Philippines

People coming back to life, indeed in the weirdest way can sometimes be fun to watch. It makes the drama an instant comedy. Thank you for reminding me about that

I guess that is one reason why a lot of people watch drama shows, it gives them a sense of not being alone in the drama of the world. Great point you got there alutka.

Hello friend, I know what you mean. These great writers were driven by the dramas they are encountering with their own lives. That is why some of these drama series are effective, while the others are just plain overrated.
