I Lost It...

When I was in High School I started to write a book. I had over 1,000 hand written pages. I loved my book and spent so much time on it. I worked my butt off on that book. I moved and I thought I grabbed my book with me but when I searched for hours I could not find it anywhere in the new house. I lost my book. I was so heart broken and when I think about it at times it still upsets me. Have you ever lost something that meant a lot to you?

Well darn. Guess you'll have to write it again! lol No, I know what it's like to lose a bunch of work like that. I worked on novels all through my childhood and I had a bunch of them on my old PC. That computer was the devil. It acted up a bunch, but one day it just up and CRASHED. The hard drive was completely gone, and nothing could be done to save anything on it. I lost SO MUCH writing! But it doesn't bother me much anymore because I've moved on to writing other things. And these days I back up my work to like ten different places.

Well, it could be not as good now... or completely non-existent. Anyway, it was probably good practice for you in any case and if you move on and write more than I believe you'll write better. I don't find pain very inspiring, it halts my line of work altogether. That's strange to me, I don't think it's really that healthy to be in sadness and stress to find inspiration. I think it's a good thing that things are going better for you not that you're out of high school.

It wasn't the right word I used I don't think. Lol. Not really inspiring but I wrote so much about the pain I experienced, that was mostly what I wrote about. The pain and sadness. So I don't really know how to write or what to write without the pain in my life. It's hard to explain I guess. But for so many years that is all I wrote about so now I guess I need to find a different subject to write about.

Ha! I wish I could but it was so good the first time and since it was about High School and I was in that environment it made my story so much better. I don't think it would be as good now. =( It is terrible losing all of the work you put so much effort in. I do not blame you at all for backing it up over and over again. I have not wrote in a long time because I find pain more inspiring for me than happy moments, high school days came with a lot of sadness so things just came to me. Not so much anymore...

allow me to add that this was when I was in middle school and there was NO such thing as computers for hardly anyone back in the dark ages...

I thought they were great - at the time - but I'm 45 years older now - give or take a few years.

I'm sorry. Even though you thought they were lousy it would be nice to look back now and be able to read them. Yeah, I was in High School and there were not any computers in the school I went to so I did everything by hand. It kills me that I lost that book.

:( That's not cool... With all the time you put into the book that is sad. I have lost a few of my favorite shirts before but I can at least go to the store and replace it by buying another one

No it wasn't cool. =( I did put a TON of work into that book. Lol, shirts are replacable but still if you liked it then it has effect on you. I have lost some of my favorite clothes before and it bothered the heck out of me!

I know how it feels to lose something so important and valuable, especially one that you have really put a lot of your effort and time into. I felt frustrated when I once lost my hard-earned cellphones, and it still remembering it still aches me. We learn some lessons from our mistakes which makes us grow stronger, and hopefully makes us better person. I am so sorry to hear of this. Maybe you could start writing another book, and this time maybe it will be something far better. Good luck on your endeavors.

Well, maybe you could start a few pages a day and when you feel that you are on the roll, that would probably be the day you could do more. I do understand your point though, about choosing to spend more time writing and earning here. But, if you could spare maybe an hour for your book then I think that would also be cool. If you do get to start on that book, good luck!

Yeah maybe I will try it again. It seems so difficult now but maybe I still have it in me...

It is so horrible losing anything valuable to us. =( Yes we just have to learn from our mistakes and move on but sometimes that is so difficult! When I think about all the work I put into that book it absolutely breaks my heart. I wish I could find the time to write another book. I would rather be here to make money for my family, no time to write. =(

Manuscripts can (and should) be re-written. I wrote thousands of pages of stories in high school, and I threw out many of them. You wrote the story once, you can always re-write it. Since you have had more life experience, the new version will likely be a lot better than the original.

Yes but when I first wrote it I was in that environment so it was much easier to write it back then. The setting was about high school. Now I am way past that stage so who knows if I could do it again or even better than when I was living it??? Now with 3 kids, a husband and a dog not so easy to find the time to write my book over again. Any extra time I do have I am here to try to earn some money to better take care of my family, any extra money helps!

Why did you write it by hand? why not the computer, easier storage. I lost my entire writing portfolio, with lots and lots of stories, ideas, poems, tons of stuff. I also lost my sketchbook, that had all my best drawings in it, and the most important thing I lost was a photo album with pictures of my son in it. I can always rewrite versions of the stories i lost, and redraw pictures I drew, but I can't get most those pictures back.

Well I lost novels when my computer hard drive crashed, so I don't think computers are entirely better.

Well, like I said I wrote it in school whenever I had a break or study hall so there was no computer available. Plus, like ally said hard drives crash and everything is lost too so either way it was a possibility that it would have been gone... I have lost pictures too that I had in storage. =( That is very painful.

Yes...I have a ring..it was my father's wedding ring. It was in the same place for years and one day I went to look for it to give to my son and it was missing...I have never found it back....so sad.

Yeah, it's one of those don't-know-what-you-got-'til-it's-gone things. But if you're anything like me or the other writers I know, you wouldn't have liked that book too much had you kept it! lol You'd be wanting to rip it up, using the original as a draft and deciding to rewrite it. So it might be a blessing! Since I work 8 to 10 hours a day writing, I usually don't have time for a full-on novel, but I do write songs and short stories and blog articles for a hobby. Well, my PC crashed one day about two years ago, and in a panic I just said "PLUCK IT" and threw in the Windows 7 CD to reinstall, not realizing I had deleted over 100 Word files of work -- including a song I wrote that I was very proud of. Long story short, I remembered the chorus to this song, by and large, and just rewrote it (yeah, I realize a song is a lot easier to rewrite than 1,000 pages lol). I entered it into a contest and ended up winning! I highly doubt the original would have done well at all. So it was a blessing. It's like in a week when I read this post again. I'll notice typos or structural errors or things I want to change or add. But it'll be too late. So maybe, just maybe, you can turn this in your favor. You can start writing (save it off-site via a USB flash drive -- that's what I do now) and end up with a final product that's much better. If I can do it and win a contest, you can do it and make the Times' list or something!

Your absolutely right. At the time it did upset me but not like it upsets me now when I think about it. I put so much hard work into it. Even if I never got it published, it would be nice to read it again for myself. I ripped those pages up a lot of times and did it over again. It was getting pretty good! Lol. Now I might not have liked it as much because I am older and more mature but I finally liked it then... I am so glad you remembered the chorus and made it even better and then won a contest for it! That is excellent. =) It was a blessing in disguise. I might just start working on the book over again. Your definitely tempting me to do it. Lol. Thank you matersfish!

I have lost something also years ago. Nothing like a book that I wrote. Maybe there is a way for you to go back to the old house and look there. It might be worth a shot. My thing was, well let me start this way. I had bought a Lincoln MarkVI back in 1983. That was my favorite car of all time, it still is and wish I still had it. But anyway, before I had bought the car, I had the brochure for that car. I had it in my mothers house in one of her hutch drawers. It sat there for many years. One day when I took the apartment upstairs, I looked all over the entire house and could not find that brochure. I asked my mother where it went and she told me that she cleaned out the drawers not long ago and thew it away. I was angry for a while over that. To this day I still wish I had that brochure. It was special to me.

Yeah I once lost a watch that my mum and dad got me.. was so sad. Although the more I think about it I am nearly convinced that an ex friend stole it from my house.

That is sad too. =( Especially when it was a gift from special people. Oh, that is even worse to have it stolen from you. That is such a back stabbing thing to do!

Sometimes I think I lost something meanwhile I put it in a safe spot and forget. Could you call your old place and ask them?. I know I usually set my important items in a spot, and forget where I put it, rip the place apart, and found it. I remember when I moved back from college, I had left some clothes, notes in my room the landlord mailed them to me which was really nice but they werent that important. I do hope you find it, its a lot of memories for you.

I wish I did that with my book but I didn't. It was so many years ago, I graduated in 2002 and I wrote this book in 9th grade. I know they would not have it. I wish I thought of that years ago! =( I wished for many years that it would come back to me but it never did...

Awww, I could almost feel you. I'm sorry for your loss. The same thing almost happened to me once, because I happened to move to and fro from our home province and in to the city. I thought I lost one of the drafts of one story I was revising. Fortunately, I have only misplaced it and I have found it later on. It was relieving, although I must say that I had cursed the hell out of anything when I initially thought that I lost it. Though this had almost happened to me, I couldn't still imagine how could I go when I would actually experience it. It's quite unthinkable for me.

Thank you. I definitely miss my book. I am glad you found your work though, I know how it feels to lose your hard work and it is terrible. I bet you did curse at everything! Lol. It is very tough, it really made me sad.

I also experience this. Seriously it is so heart breaking. My first story that I wrote is written on my PE notebook when I was on High School and now that notebook is nowhere to find. T.T But now I prefer to write on computer and make back ups to prevent losing my works.

It is heart breaking. You put so much time and effort into something, its sad once it is gone. =( Yeah, back then we did not have computers in my school yet so all I had was my notebook...
