Well, I finally went and bought an avocado for the first time ever. Now I don't know what to do with it. I had a idea to put it on a hamburger. Is that good to you? What do you do with them, do you eat them alot?

I love avocado. My brother is very good in preparing an avocado dessert. And it's so yummy. :) All you have to do is slice it (of course) take the huge seed out, get the meat and dice it. After which you can add brown sugar and powdered milk then have it chilled. Some people use white sugar and condensed milk but the combination of brown sugar and powdered milk is yummier in my opinion. You can add more of the two until it suits your taste :)

There is something about adding powdered milk now that I'm interested in. I was at the grocery store today briefly and forgot to buy avacadoes, darn it. Next time I will remember. I seem to have a craving for one now but none in the house.

On sale is even better, and when you can have one for dessert after lunch it's wonderful. I will get to the grocery store again and get another one.

I know right? Oh it was funny, I didn't have avocado yesterday so when I say avocados for sale at $0.50 per kilo I bought 'em right away. I just had avocado dessert after my lunch meal. I hope you satisfy your craving soon :D

I like to eat them just like they are. My mom used to take out the seed and put a dollop of mayonnaise there to dip it in. Some people use salt on them. You can use them in salads or cheese based dip, or make guacamole or slice them on sandwiches. If you like it, you'll find ways to use it.

Oh, no, don't make guacamole with a food processor. You just mash up the avocado and tomato, then dice onions and add a little garlic and salt if you want to. It needs to be just slightly chunky for the best flavor. A food processor will ruin it.

OK, I won't. Would it be very mushy then if I did that? I will take your word for it though either way. I will leave it chunky. I seen some already made guacomole in the store today but it probably has loads of additives and salt.

I will try eating it just as it is and then see what kinds of sandwiches to use them on. I have heard that quacamole is good to make as well. I think I need a food processor for that though.

I love avocados! They're great on hamburgers, salads, in tacos, plain, stuffed with whatever (I love mine with either salmon or tuna),as an additive in sandwiches (any kind of sandwich except grilled cheese). Your options are only limited by your imagination! Do a search online for avocado recipes and see what there is to offer. I have even done a main dish with rice with the avocado setting on top of the rice and then an Alfredo sauce, with whatever kind of meat I want in it, poured over the avocado. It is such a wonderfully fast and yummy main dish! Being that this is the first ever avocado you have ever had, do you know that you need to let it get reasonably soft before your eat it? Also you can start a tree from the seed in the center. You can either plant it in a small pot of dirt or you can stick tooth picks around it (three or four max) and set it in a glass of water for it to root. You need to make sure that the water stays clean and that the water at least covers 1/4 of the end of the avocado.

In your area it would have to be grown in a pot in the house as avocados don't tolerate freezing temperatures well. If you have a really sunny spot in your house it would be perfect! You can either start the seed in a pot or in a glass. It's more fun to watch it develop in the glass, watching the roots form and the tree emerge. When the stalk starts to come out it's time to plant. It's kind of like a bonus, you get to eat the avocado and then you get a free house plant!

Yea, we only have the other citrus trees out in their pots now cause it's so hot outside. I love house plants, so I would be giving this a try.

They seem to be popular. I had been looking at some a month ago for awhile, and they all seemed to be too mushy and soft on sale, so I didn't touch them again but recently some other grocery store I went to had some better ones, and picked one up. I think this one I got was the best consistancy, not too soft or hard either. I am interesting in the salmon and tuna thing you mentioned so will definetly give that a try one time, and the rice and Alfredo sauce sounds somewhat good too. I have seen a page on the Net about the growing them from seed part but only looked at it briefly, will need to check on how thats done again. We have things like that growing here, but citrus trees in small pots, from seeds and such.

Avocadoes are good on hamburgers, tacos, with salsa on nachos, or by themselves. They are good stuff especially if ripe. I eat them marinated in a good vinaigretter of your choice with cut up tomatoes and maybe a cucumber as well. Marinated afew hours in the fridge and then eat. Now that's good!

They will last awhile if refrigerated. I like them best in salad. With salsa and such not so much. Good for us too!

Oh cool, I think I'd like them better chilled, perhaps even before I open it up I can put it in the fridge, too. I have to buy more soon. I was reading where they are high in Vitamin K which helps the skin heal after surgery which is important for me soon, and also they are high in fat though which isn't good for me right now in other ways, so maybe I'll wait on that a few days or so after my surgery.

Well, I just opened it and tasted it for the first time and it wasn't that bad. I ate it plain though without any dressing or even mayonaisse. i don't think I'd like it with mayo though from the taste of it. I think it would taste better cold too, unless the weather here is just too warm anyways to leave it out at room temperature. They are supposed to be eaten right away so I dunno how they would take by marinating for a few hours even in the fridge, but I'll have to try that next time.

No need to apologize, I understand. I type that way too sometimes, no worries. I will buy another one soon. I think you meant powered milk? And ice. Interesting! I was actually wondering if they would taste good in a smoothie! Ha, I have tried using spinach in smoothies and they actually don't taste bad with it if I add some fruit.

Well, it was my intention to eat it. That is why I bought it, they are very good for you I'm told. Is it a fruit? I always thought it was a vegetable but am probably wrong.

*LOL* i am so sorry, I did not mean it that way. sometimes some things in my mind are not hundred percent typed by hand.Eventhough I read it again there are some things that my eyes passed and did not notice it. avocado is a fruit, i actually have one right now, I intend to eat it with powdered mild and ice. It's very delicious. Why not try to eat it this way? I am sure you would like it.

The accepted way is to cut the thing in half with a knife, cutting through all around from the stem end to the stone/pit and then twisting in half. You remove the stone from one of the halves by piercing it with the sharp point of the knife and twisting. You then have two boat-shaped halves with a hollow in the centre (where the stone was). Fill this hollow with a salad dressing of your choice - usually a simple oil/vinegar/mustard dressing - and scoop out the soft, green, buttery flesh with a spoon so that it takes up a little of the dressing with each mouthful. You can also cut the thing into quarters (after halving it as above), chop the flesh into chunks or slices and incorporate with a green salad OR mash the flesh roughly with a fork and blend with oil, lime juice, garlic and other things as a dip or a spread (called 'guacamole'). Avocado bruises quite easily and goes brown quite quickly when exposed to air, so, once you have cut it or mashed it, it is important to serve/eat it quite soon. Avocado doesn't really stand any cooking. It is usually eaten raw and just at the point where the flesh is 'buttery'. You can judge when an avocado is ripe by squeezing it VERY gently. If it gives just the very least bit, it should be just right. If it seems to be hard, leave it for a day or so.

The taste is far too delicate to go with a hamburger, really. I would eat it on its own (with oil/vinegar dressing, as described). Mexicans like it as guacamole which is a mixture of avocado with mostly lime juice, garlic and a little black pepper and salt (plus a little oil, perhaps).

Great advice there. I had seen alot of that on some videos on avocado practices, and they all seem to have the same info so I guess it's all safe to do. I wouldn't imagine cooking it, it does seem like a raw food.

You can add it to a salad. If you like lettuce and tomatoes you can cut a several peices and mix it with the salad. Or you can add t to a sandwich.

Yes, I love lettuce and tomatoes, yum! I will have to try it in salad, that sounds the easiest! I have salad most everyday. I was wondering what kind of sandwiches are best to use it with though.

Avocados - How healthy is avocado? Well very healthy because this fruit is very rich in monounsaturated fat and potassium of a banana. It protects the liver from damage as well. It is also a beauty food because it nourishes and moisturizes our skin.
You can actually eat your avocados by itself. Now if you don't enjoy its quite bland taste then add some condensed milk and let it cool. It will surely taste great. You can also add this to your green salad and even fruits salad. You may also make a creamy salad dressing with eat. Just mix avocado and fresh carrot juice together. Always take the opportunity to eat avocado whenever it is in season. It is a very healthy fruit. If you need energy, eat avocados because they are rich in monounsaturated fat which is easily burned for energy. I has more potassium than banana. I think it has twice as much. actually has more than twice the potassium of a banana.

I will do that, thanks for the added input. I didn't know that about the potassium, and also maybe I shouldn't eat it in the same day as the banana due to potassium overload?

I use it with bread, at breakfast. I use it as an appetizer (guacamole or just avocado pasta with ait of onion). I use is diced in green salads (with lettuce and celery). I also make a couple of sauces for beef bourginon with them. I cut them in half and place prawns in the whole for an entree. You can do almost anything and it`s all yummy!

Here, what I do to avocado is make it a refreshing smoothie. Just as a little ice, sugar and milk or creamer then put it in a blender. Also You may opt not to blend it but just scoop, add milk/creamer, sugar then chill it before serving. Some uses this avocado as guacamole.

hi nailtech! i have heard many good things about avocados, such as that they are rich in nutrients and delicious, etc...i have seen people on television cooking shows grilling them with fruits like pineapple...i have only had avocado in guacamole, which can be delicious and can not be...i have no idea why because never made it myself! i think the freshness factor is important because the best guacamole i ever had was in a gourmet mexican cafe in atlanta, and you actually saw the people grating avocado right in front of diners and making extremely fresh guacamole..

Grilled avocadoes? Really sounds different. I have never grilled pineapples but I'm sure anything can be grilled these days, even pizza! I have to grate it and see how that turns out.

I love avocado! I even have a tree in my backyard. Aside from being delicious, avocados are also beneficial to our health. It has been shown to prevent certain cancers. It is low on cholesterol and it has folate, vitamin e, monounsaturated fats and glutathione. There are lots of ways to prepare avocado but my favorite is mashing it in a bowl putting some milk and sugar then put it in the freezer for a while...feels like you're eating soft ice cream but with all the goodness of avocado. I also like cutting it into strips then putting it in my sandwich with lettuce, tomato and grilled chicken strips. You could add a dash of whatever dressing you like:)

How lucky are you with an avocado tree in your yard! I think I will try that soft ice cream thing, it sounds interesting! I like to try making my own ice cream, sometimes. The sandwich sounds great as well. I am so hungry for avocado again now.

Or you could make an avocado shake which is one of my favorite. Though it is seasonal fruit here in my country, I never missed to buy some. Though many people doesn't like its blunt taste, I would loved to eat it without any dressing. And if you want to do something else with its seed (rather than throwing it on the garbage) , please watch the movie "Red" starring Bruce Willis & Morgan Freeman. You'll see what I mean.

Why don't you just eat it? See if you enjoy the taste or not. It's a type of pear. The skin isn't very nice, so slice in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon.
