HELP! What Can I Cook?

United States
August 20, 2012 5:56pm CST
Well, I started seeing a guy and I'm supposed to take him lunch on Wednesday, but there's only one problem. I have absolutely NO IDEA what to take him. I asked if he wanted something homemade or if he wanted something from a restaurant but all he says is, "Surprise me!" I told him I needed a little help because I had to get this right because as the old saying goes, "A way to a man's heart is through his stomach". His response, "You better believe it!" So, I'm lost! I have absolutely no idea what kind of food he likes except Chinese, because that's where he took me out to eat yesterday. So, if I make something then what am I gonna make? I need recipes, ideas, ANYTHING! HELP!

I don't know about him, but most guys like meat and plenty of it. A roast with roasted vegetables, steak, things like that. Even homemade hamburgers would probably go over well. What did he order from the Chinese place? If he likes seafood, that's another option. Part of it depends on what you're comfortable cooking, too. I wouldn't try to make something I wasn't sure of, at least at first.

Very true, I may wanna stick with something that I know I can cook. He did order a dish, I can't remember the name, but it had shrimp, beef, and chicken in it and he said something about how it only had 2 shrimp, so I took it that he wanted more shrimp. So, I guess shrimp could be an option.

There you go, buy some good sized fully cooked shrimp, put them in a marinade briefly, string them on skewers and warm them up on the grill or even on a skillet. You could put veggies or pineapple wedges on it with them. Finger food that is fancy. Brownies are very versatile, and if you bake them in mini muffin cups you can garnish each one differently if you like.

Baked Salmon with Side Dish - A very healthy meal.
Well dear you can surprise him by giving him something he has not really eaten. If he likes Chinese food don't give him any Chinese food. Give him something different, something simple but healthy and light but very tasty. How about baking or grilling a salmon fillet. Add herbs to make it really good then add up some greens and fruits on the side. Then make some fresh fruit juice for him.

When I have no ideas of what to cook for dinner, I always do steak and rice. My husband and I both like steak, I can just get a nice cut and serve it with rice for dinner, it is easy and quick! And my husband never wold get bored with steak so he is always happy with this meal.

What did he like at the Chinese restaurant, as that would be a clue to what he likes. Are you taking lunch to him at work or at his home? At work, keep it simple, like maybe chicken strips and fresh fruit, etc. Finger food, sort of. Whatever you do, make a decadent dessert to share. Maybe something chocolate, like a brownie.

I am taking it to him at work. So, yeah simple may be the best way to go, but like you said, I gotta have a great dessert and brownies do sound delicious! :)

Hi there! I think it's good that you're cooking for this guy, but I don't think it's a good strategy to be trying out dishes for the date. You should cook something you're familiar with. Something that people always tell you you're good at. I know you'd want full perfection but I don't think it should be something over-the-top where you'd be slaving the whole day. At the end of the day, it will still be how good you'll look. ehhehee.. The first dinner I made for my partner was made by my mom! haha.. I didn't tell him of course! I helped and have always helped my mom make one but after discovering how much he loved it, I decided to really learn it. We cooked him Pata Tim, it's pork legs with sweet sauce. Since you don't know this guy's interest. It would be safe if you cooked chicken. Good luck! Have a great Mylot experience ahead!

Hi there singlemommy! How about making beef and broccoli? Here's my recipe. Get beef strips (made for pepper steak or stir fry.) Clean them and put in bowl. Cut up 2 decent size bunches of fresh broccoli and clean and at to bowl with meat. Cut up 1/2 green and red pepper into strips and add to bowl. Next, cut up a decent size onion into strips and add to bowl. Add the following seasonings: seasoned salt, pepper, fresh hot pepper cut into tiny strips (but please don't add the seeds}, fresh garlic (2 to 3 cloves peeled, and smashed), 3 tablespoons of soy sauce,. Mix all of ingredients together real well. In a big pot, add 3 tablespoons of vegetable or conola oil and let it heat up. Once heated, add the meat and let cook for 10 minutes {with top off]. Next, add the broccoli, give it a good stir and let cook for 15 minutes with top on. Check the meat for tenderness. Next, add your peppers and onions and rinse the bowl with water, adding the water to the pot. Let cook for another 5 minutes. To thicken the gravy, put two teaspoons of cornstarch in a cup of water, mix well and add to pot and add 2 tablespoons of sugar to even out the heat from the hot pepper. I hope you like it, my 3 boys sure did. From one single mommy to another. I wish you the best on your date.

I hope it went well. In the future if you want something Chinese quick you can make Chinese chicken salad. Cut up some chicken in some salad and add dressing which is made with 1 1/2 T rice vinegar, 3T mayonnaise (I use the no fat kind), 3T honey or Splenda and 1/8 t sesame oil. Mix it with the salad and at the last minute dump some rice noodles, the kind in a can, on top. I love it so much that I don't need the recipe anymore, I make it a few times a month, especially in the summer. That said, I don't think much of your guy right now. He obviously knew you had no idea what to make or buy and he's either seeing if you have the capacity to read his mind or he wants to set you up for failure. Of course, he could just be a guy who likes surprises but you have to watch out for this type of passive-aggressive behavior. Many times, it indicates someone with control issues.

If you are taking it to him you could certainly fix chinese. But he just had it yesterday. I would fix him a sandwich with oriental accents. THis sounds like just the ticket: http://www.food.com/recipe/oriental-chicken-sandwich-282639 Hope it works for you. It looks easy to fix and sounds really tasty.

If I were you, I'll be just who am I. Cook what you like. As time passes you will know the guy more. That saying is not really applicable to everybody. If a man loves you no matter how you cook or even if you don't know how to cook, he will remain loving you.

Do you know his mom. If you know his mom then invite her to dinner, make dish with her and then that would be the biggest surprise when to serve the dish and he found that the food taste similar to his mother dish. Well that would be a great surprise.

I don't know if this is popular where you are but I'm thinking Italian. Now I don't cook so don't ask for any recipes but if you have a sauce you like use it and although it sounds difficult, lasagne could do it. Just boil up some lasagne noodle (or not - read below), lay them in a 9 1/2 X 11 pan, then layer it with mozzarella and ricotta (mix the ricotta with spices - basil, oregano, garlic, parmesan cheese and my Mom used to beat an egg in there too?, another layer of noodles, then a layer that's a mixture of ground beef and ground sausage browned, layer sauce on each layer. Now some say you don't have to boil the noodles first by baking it at 350 degrees for 45 minutes covered than 10 minutes uncovered. If you boiled them I would imagine about 20 minutes in the oven would be fine. Sorry,we have an Italian background but unfortunately this generation of us aren't anywhere as talented as the one before us. My 96 year old aunt is still at it but if you were to ask her for recipes, she just says mix it together til it looks right, smells right. I don't know what he'll think but Italian food always pleases. Hey real simple - how about a pizza!! They must sell dough at some stores, just lay it out but stuff on and bake!
