Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon with his now legenday words "One small step for man, a giant leap for mankind." He did it with Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin on July 20, 1969 in the Apollo 11 mission. Neil Armstrong passed away on August 25, 2012 aged 82. You can the moon landing video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwZb2mqId0A There were a lot of debates on the necessity to explore the space with so much precious resources while we still have so many problems in our own earth that need help; poverty, famine, illness, illiterate, pollution etc. The song below, its lyrics is quite philosophical on the matter. It is a nice song too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6Vhvxdew2Q Armstrong - Lobo Black boy in Chicago Playin' in the street Not enough to wear Not near enough to eat But don't you know he saw it On that July afternoon Saw a man named Armstrong Walk upon the moon Young girl in Calcutta Barely eight years old The flies that swarm the market place Will see she don't grow old But don't you know she heard it On a July afternoon Heard a man named Armstrong Walk upon the moon Rivers getting dirty The wind is gettin' bad War and hate are killing off The only earth we have But the whole world stopped to watch it On that July afternoon Watched a man named Armstrong Walk upon the moon And I wonder if a long time ago Somewhere in the universe They watched a man named Adam Walk upon the earth

You are right. Why we are exploring other planet and spent more money without any more useful returned. If I am the President of USA, I priorities in solving the common problem of the country and extend it to another. More people suffer famine. They never eat good foods since birth but America and other Rich country wasted their money in searching something in the universe to show that they rich and powerful.

If they have excess budget maybe it's okay but imagine how much USA owes billions of money to World Bank. They don't have enough to sustain their countrymen. It start the recession of the world. Aside from that people in African countries don't have even cents to buy their own food. Why they didn't use that funds to help people in the world.

Research in space exploration is not a waste as by understanding the sky, we could know more about our earth. In the process of space exploration we too develop better technologies which could help to solve some of our problems better. It is just the question of the allocation of resources. To help the poor and needy should be the priority but the researches have to go on.

You are lucky to have met him. It was reported that he was a humble and quiet man. Was he like that? But as a test pilot or an astronaut, I am sure that he had to be a very confident and brave man. May his soul rest in peace.

He had a good life and he left a great legacy. Just a little bit of American history, gone today. I've been singing that song for the last few days now but I forgot about all the other words. Kindda sad all the way around. But may he rest in peace.

Hi jkct02, I think that Neil Armstrong was a great man but I also think we spend far too much money on space travel. Your poem really says it all, we should solve the problems on earth before we put money into space travel. Blessings.

While to help the poor and the needy is a priority, the research and development on technology and space exploration should not be stopped. We just have to make sure that enough funds have to be used to take care of those less fortunate people.

Neil Armstrong is not just known for his famous landing on the moon. He was also a humble man and a man of principles. He was low-profiled and did not use his fame easily. He also contributed to charities.

To be honest, Neil Armstrong was just doing his job when he landed on the moon as he was well trained by NASA. But there is no question about his bravery and professionalism in completing the task he was entrusted. What he did helped us understand more about the moon and the space. He will never be forgotten.

Yes, the man who made the giant leap for mankind finally succumbed to cardiac complications. I think he has been an icon for the mankind and his statement is well repeated the world over. Neil Armstrong rest in peace. Cheers! Ram

To set foot on a planet has always been a dream of mankind. Moon is the nearest and with the success of Armstrong's famous landing there, space exploration and inter-planetary travel is not just a dream now. We are not there yet but we are surely on the way. Neil Armstrong might have made a giant leap for mankind on that July afternoon.

I am proud that Neil Armstrong was from my home state in Ohio. While I feel that we have problems here on earth; I also feel that we need to advance as beings. I feel that it is within our genes to advance our human race. There is so much destructive spirit that wants to see the human race destroyed. But it is within us to keep the gene pool going. As a Christian believer in God, I already see that "intelligent" living things are not meant to perish. God's Kingdom will live on. Even if you don't believe in God, there are beings somewhere who are determined for life to go on, even when the universe is no more. Intelligent life cannot be destroyed. What's the use of having intelligence, if not to further the cause of immortality? We can have a space program AND help our fellow man.

I agree that we human beings have to continue to develop and advance in whatever situations and circumstances. Because by our invention or technology advancement, we could also find solutions to the problems we face on this earth. It is the balance of the resources used that we have to make sure it is there so that the urgent problems and disasters can be addressed quickly and adequately, while research and development activities are not neglected.

Hi, thank you for sharing touching poem. There are many problems the people on the earth are facing. Exploring another planet requires much more money. but advancement is required for our development. we should know the universe around our planet earth. Armstrong was very great and strong person. He was lucky and created the history by putting firstly his step on the moon. May he rest in peace.

Preferably a balance can be struck for the resources used between exploring the outer world and helping the poor and unfortunate in our world, but in all practicality, it is not easily done for political. military and other reasons. Primarily the exploring of space and other planets are being pursued by just a few capable countries who would not have given out the funds as aids to the needy third world countries even if they scrap their space project. Armstrong was no doubt a great man for what he achieved. He will always be remembered for being the first man on the moon.
