For those of you unfamiliar with it, (Na)tional (No)vel (Wr)iting (Mo)nth is a writer's challenge/event hosted by the Office of Letters and Light. The challenge is to write a 50,000 word novel in a month. Usually the main event takes place in November, but in recent years they've started hosting a Camp NaNoWriMo for June and August. Exact same challenge, except in a different month. Since I missed NaNoWriMo in the horrible train-wreck that was last year, I decided to give Camp NaNoWriMo a try. Well, June went so well that I was like, "Why not?" So I did August too, and this time my sister joined the challenge too, so we both finished a novel in a month! Day after, we exchanged our unpolished raw novels and read them, which was actually kind of a blast. I want to do the main event in November too! (Trying to convince my sis to write with me so we can exchange raw novels at the end again. ) So maybe when the year is over, I'll have written three novels around 50,000 words each!

Woo!!! congrats Ally, I didn't know they had started a June and August one, is this the first year? Because next year I may try it, but I also hopefully will try this November, because remember last year I was taking classes and didn't think I had the time? Well, this year, my grant didn't come through, so I won't take classes again until the second semester..And as for the story I wrote, I am really hoping to be finished with revising and will get it copyrighted by the end of this week. So the only thing I will be doing for that is working towards getting it published.. Oh wow, I am soooo glad you reminded me about NaNoWriMo, I can't wait to start.....

I know they had Camp last year too, so it's not the first year, but it is pretty recent and I'm not entirely sure how recent. Ooh! I hope you get to try November with me! There's still September and October to get everything sorted out beforehand. I've got a few ideas I could go for in November but I'm not quite sure which one I want to do. I bet I'll know by day one though.

Oh yeah, you mentioned they have a camp, I guess you call it, online, that I don't have to go to my local library? Is that correct? Please share the link again, if I saved it I have no idea where...and yes, it would be cool to do it together. Can you explain in a little more detail how it works so I know what I am up against?

It's all online, you never have to go to the local library, though the main NaNoWriMo does have local city/county write-ins that you could possibly attend. I've never gone to one myself. Here's the camp link: http://campnanowrimo.org/ And here's the main event (upcoming in November): http://www.nanowrimo.org/ Basically, you sign up on the web-page and it gives you some tools to work with plus access to the forums/community of other writers trying NaNo with you. Among your tools there's a word count updater and a stats page tracking your progress which tells you what the average words you need to write per day is, how many words you have left, how many is your average, what average you need to have to finish on time, etc. They send everyone pep-talk e-mails every few weeks, and sometimes they're written by notable authors. Towards the end, they have a word-count verifier which you copy and paste the text of your novel into (the paranoid among us are allowed to 'scramble' the novel, though we are reassured the tool just counts the words and deletes the text from its memory) which verifies your word-count. If it's over 50,000, then you get to the winner goodies page, which is usually a bunch of little jpgs that say "NaNoWriMo Winner!". I think it's loads of fun, personally. I feel like I write better when I have that deadline and that community to work with.

Hi Ally.. been quite a while since I last came here, so it's not exactly a punishable offence if you've forgotten me altogether!! Hearty congratulations to you and your sis for completing the challenge. It's a real talent that you possess, and you should hone it to perfection. Who knows, maybe the next novel I get my hands upon will perhaps be yours only, displayed in glittering bookcases in spanking shopping malls all over the globe..

Well, I've been doing fine, thank you.. In fact, there has been quite a massive change in my life from the last time I used to come here as I have changed my job and migrated back to my hometown. Now I'm more satisfied regarding my job and staying in my city as well.. So how's life going for you?

Up and downs, but been pretty up the last few months. I changed colleges and majors. I was doing pretty poorly when I was at my old school, but now I'm on the road back up again. I'm glad you're doing well at your new job! That's good to hear.

Wow, that is awesome that you guys have been able to do that. I would love to do a challenge like that I love to write and that would definitely be a challenge for me. Congrats to you both though.

The Official NaNoWriMo starts up in November. It could never hurt to try!

Well done - hope the material generated is worthy of publication. It might be worth checking through the texts of the novels you generated to see what you can do with them. Good luck.

My family is starting to gear up for this in November. At the very least my daughter will get it done. My oldest son and her completed it last November. We had a party afterwards. I just plain had too much on my plate at the time. The situation might be the same this year. Right now I'm in the middle of revisions for my first book. I'm polishing it for an interested publisher. I'm hopeful. I will know if they will take me on as a new author mid-October. If that falls through, I will likely be writing with my kids otherwise I know I will be too busy. I heard of camp NaNoWriMo but never looked into it. Might work better for me. Good luck with all your writing.

If you have less on your plate in June/August then it might be better for you. Otherwise it's exactly the same, it's just at a different time of year. Well, some of the online features are different, but it feels basically the same for me. I'm gearing up for this November as well.
