Too many emails

United States
October 29, 2012 6:20pm CST
Decided today that since I have over 79000 emails I was going to go through them. I have emails dated clear back to January 2012. So today I decided to delete a lot of the old ones. Most of them were facebook notification, so I edited my email settings for those. Hopefully now, I won't be getting any new facebook emails. There are some emails I want to save in folders such as craft instructions and recipes. However, when I select the option where you can click on all the emails and then I want to unclick the ones I want to keep, it won't let me do it. So now I'm stuck with scrolling through my emails and checking the ones I want to delete. What a long process or I could just delete them all, what do you think?

Can you sort them by sender, and then select batches of them from various senders? That's what I try to do with my Yahoo mail. And if it landed in the spam box, I just delete it because I probably wouldn't have been interested. I really need to go and adjust my Facebook settings-I'm in one group and the members send so many messages some days, it's crazy! Thanks for the reminder-I'm heading to Facebook to fix my settings right now...

I do have Yahoo email, but even when I search by sender, I will delete it but it still shows up. Sometimes it works and some times it doesn't. It seems like when I want it to work, it doesn't! Thanks for joining the discussion!

It is interesting for me to hear that it is not just me who is having difficulties with my e mail from Yahoo. I am using a 3G stick tonight and I thought that a lot of the problem was because of that. I am so glad that now I just get to pack my computer away and go home and go to bed. Tomorrow morning comes early and I will have to be back at work early.

I think Yahoo has gone WAY downhill from when I first began using them (around 2000). Back then, there was actual people helping in the support boards; now questions largely go unanswered. Eventually I'll change everything over to G-mail, but I haven't had time. I DID go in and change my notifications on Facebook tonight (started last night, but the power cut out in the middle of that); hopefully that will clean things up a bit. That's strange that messages come back AFTER you've deleted them-are you periodically emptying your trashcan? Sometimes I go to the oldest messages and start deleting them in batches of 25 at a time. Usually I don't have more than 2000 messages at a time-still trying to get my head around that many messages at a time!

Jodee, since i don't want to missed out some of my important emails, i decided to check them one by one. I keep those emails that i wanted in a separate folder and deleted those unwanted emails. I see i still need to check and sort out my emails since it is still nearly 5 thousands emails up to-date. The oldest email that i had is dated back to March 2012. Time to get going and sort out my emails again. Hope you are able to find a much easy way to sort out your emails. You seems to have too much emails that need your attention...

I am happy to see that i had managed to sort out quite a lot of my emails. Majorities are unwanted emails. now, i had only 2 thousands emails left to be sorted out. How about you by now? How much emails left out for sorting? Have a nice journey sorting out your emails, friend...

Since I haven't read them in this amount of time, I guess I don't know what I'm missing! Not all of them are that important. In fact I think I will unsubscribe to some of them. Thanks for joining in the discussion!

oh, my, and i was thinking that 5000+ emails are too many. if it contains more notification than the 'necessary' ones, and you can do without them, then by all means, empty the inbox!

That's what I figure, maybe keep this months emails and start deciding which ones I should keep getting emails from and unsucbscribe to the ones I don't and spam the rest! Thanks for joining in on the conversation!

Yes, I should check my emails everyday too! But sometimes when I haven't had internet connection they seem to pile up or I'll read the important ones and forget the others. Thanks for joining in this discussion!

i think best way is to keep separate emails to your interests! one for official, one for personal, like that! you can give one email for your all social networks! then it will be easy to handle! also you will not accidently delete, or miss your important e mails! :)

I have never let my emails pile up that badly before. I think I would go through the ones from the last month or so and then just delete the rest. If it is something from back in January I am sure it doesn't really matter much anymore.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking if they're a year old they're not new news anymore! If they were recipes or crafts I'll just go directly to their website! They really piled up when I didn't have internet for about a month! Thanks for joining in this discussion!

My computer sometimes doesn't let me do what I want to do so far as moving emails around goes. But then I discover that it's just been thinking about it, and it's taken rather a while. It's normally when I've got far too much stuff cluttering it up. I reckon you could probably just delete most emails though. I bet most of that craft stuff would be available on the net if you ever wanted it again. I find I rarely look at stuff again once I've sorted it into folders.

79,000 emails is enormous. Were you able to classify them? The hard thing is when you received an urgent mail and it gets covered by many unimportant ones.

I did figure out how to save an important contact (such as myLot) and when I open my email I can quickly go to them. So at least when I'm deleting from now on I will be able to see these first so I can read and respond to them. Thanks for joining in on this discussion!

That's too much! You can sort them I think, by sender so you can see what email messages to retain and save. I always try to read through all my email messages everyday so it won't pile up. Good luck and I hope you can get through it fast.

I know that is definitely too many! I think some of the emails I'm going to unsubscribe to. When I was without internet for almost a month they start piling up and then I only read the ones that are important to me such as myLot emails. Thanks for joining in this discussion!

I think I'll just delete all the old ones and then start from scratch and read my emails everyday and will have more time to spam the ones I don't want. Thanks for joining in this discussion!

When you delete emails, they are not deleted but hidden. Somewhere there is the "compose" function or something similar. It erases deleted. And accelerates the work with the mails. Only then it will be cleaned.

I was wondering about that also. Because I have 2 different numbers of emails in my inbox. That's probably when I search for a specific email (such as myLot) so those emails come up quickly. After, I've read those emails, sometimes I can delete them and sometimes I can't. Thanks for the input and will try this!

That's absolutely ridiculous that you should have to go through all of that. I used to have hotmail and I've found since I switched to gmail its much easier to sort my messages. Maybe I'd explore trying another email service if that wouldn't be too disruptive.

That could be an option, but then wouldn't I have to change my yahoo address over to a gmail account? Wouldn't I still be receiving the same emails? Sounds like work to me! Thanks for joining in the discussion!

I didn't want it to be that way either, but when you're unable to even get into your emails because of no internet it sometimes happens! Thanks for joining in this discussion!

That's what I'm going to do also, but first I have to spend time getting rid of the old to make room for the new! I need to get into a daily routine of going through my emails every day, that way if I don't have internet at least I will have gotten rid of the OLD emails! Thanks for joining in on this discussion! Sorry you broke your shoulder, that must have and probably still is painful?

Wow, that was too many for an inbox! Well, if you can 100% say that no one had emailed you important messages then you may delete all but if you are not sure you may want to delete it by group. Well, in group at least you can see who are the senders and what are the subjects and you will have the opt to delete it by group. Also to prevent this, you may also want to unsubscribe to the websites that you may not be interested anymore. I hope this helps!

Are these total include your spam/junk e-mail? Well, the ones that I accumulated in my Yahoo inbox overtime (excluding bulk/spam email) are closed to 600 including the ones that I have not opened. I go through it every week. I also go through my spam/junk folder as well. I also have three other email accounts, which 2 of them (Hotmail and gmail), I go through each week. Their numbers are much much less. Combining altogether, I still lost to your total numbers. You should check your email every day and go through one week's worth of inbox weekly. Going through involves deleting messages that are not worth keeping or accumulating. It's all as simple as that.
